So, I just realized what seems to be happening.
It appears to be a "rope a dope" strategy. Trump is letting the press and Hillary pummel him, throwing whatever they can at him, and wearing themselves out while fracturing their credibility.
If the public is aware, even on a subconscious level, of media bias against Trump in August, by the time October hits, anything they attempt to "surprise" him with should be a glancing blow. The voters won't take it seriously.
The press have recontexualized, revised and even outright fabricated to make negative stories about Trump. Don Lemon and others like him are seen as untrustworthy. And Trump keeps taunting them each time they start to fatigue.
All those years of hanging out with boxing legends appears to be affecting Trump's campaign.
[–]rustmepleaseGA 15 points16 points17 points  (0 children)
You think this is something, wait until you see him take on the rest of the world for our benefit!
[–]seinfan9TX 82 points83 points84 points  (32 children)
Yes, the strategy is to basically make them the boy who cried wolf.
[–]aperlsNY 62 points63 points64 points  (0 children)
The boy who cried for tendies
[–]Megabran 54 points55 points56 points  (22 children)
He's doing what he's always done. He makes a semi controversial statement, media goes apeshit over it, people look up his actual quote to see if he's for real, then end up on the Trump train. That's what happened to me!
[–]spaceman2121 22 points23 points24 points  (6 children)
same here. always thought of him as a ridiculous dude. saw one of his actual rally videos, was impressed by his ability to speak for an hour without a script, hooked since
[–]olater3IL 3 points4 points5 points  (0 children)
same, the rallies got me hooked on daddy

people look up his actual quote to see if he's for real
Unfortunately, this is the extra step a lot of people don't bother to take. It's easier for them to be spoon fed than it is to make the effort to feed themselves.
    [–]Megabran 7 points8 points9 points  (0 children)
That's where we come in. Gotta try to talk sense into your friends/family

      [–]Megabran 0 points1 point2 points  (5 children)
Even so, Trump is again shaping the narrative. Yesterday it was all they talked about. He says something outlandish, "fact" checkers talk about how Obama and Hillary only fostered the rise of ISIS, not literally created it. Non retards knew that was the case all along but Trump brought it into the narrative. Sounds like a good thing to me
      [–]roach95 1 point2 points3 points  (4 children)
But that's not what you were saying. You were implying that the media is taking him out of context to discredit him. If lying to the media for your own personal gain is something to be proud of, why does everyone hate when Hillary does it? Should we praise people for just saying random shit and saying that they "shaped the narrative" when people call them out on it?
Also, it's very easy to criticize foreign policy decisions with hindsight. What do you think should have been done with regard to Iraq and Syria?
      [–]Megabran -1 points0 points1 point  (3 children)
I don't think we should have intervened in either country, but that's looking in hindsight no? Trump says a lot of things. He says things offhand, jokes around, and the media takes every single one at face value. Why should he treat them with anything other than hostility? I wouldn't call Trump exaggerating Obama's role in the formation of ISIS anywhere near as bad as Hillary's lies in general. She's a criminal, he speaks without a PR filter
      [–]roach95 3 points4 points5 points  (2 children)
Well here's my problem. You say that Trump says things offhand and jokes around but the media takes all of it at face value. Right here is a prime example where he wasn't joking around. He was offered multiple chances to clarify his statements or say it was a joke. But then suddenly because of the backlash he comes out and says he was just being sarcastic. That is the exact opposite of telling it like it is.
And ok fair enough on Hillary. But do you think it's a good thing for people to make outlandish statements to "shape the narrative"? Because that's the biggest problem I have with the regressive left. If they make up false or extremely exaggerated statistics about the wage gap and rape statistics and then say it's just to get people talking about the issue is that ok? Because I don't and I think we need to be consistent about denouncing that sort of behavior regardless of who does it.
      [–]Megabran -1 points0 points1 point  (1 child)
I think the whole thing is a case of him baiting the media, which I am 100% in favor of. It's become clear that the media is completely compromised so any way he can take advantage is that corruption us a good thing in my book. Previous candidates have tried running as straight shooters and failed. Look at the primaries, look at the races in 2012 and 2008. They were vulnerable to the media slander in a way DJT is not. I'm sure he's not infallible, but I love his policies, I love his fighting spirit, and I think he's exactly what we need right now, so I'm willing to cut him some slack on what may be seen as non sequiturs. I see your point about making things up though, but Trump is fighting fire with fire and it's working. Either way the media as it is now needs a serious overhaul, we need more than 6 companies running the MSM (all of whom have donated to Clinton).
      [–]roach95 1 point2 points3 points  (0 children)
I still don't like the idea of someone who is trying to be taken seriously as a presidential candidate stooping to bait the media. I would be okay with him not running as a straight shooter if I thought he brought enough to the table but I fear he's going to just let Mike Pence make all the policy decisions which I think is a terrible idea. I do see your points about the MSM but I disagree about fighting fire with fire. Eye for an eye makes the whole world blind and all that.
Regardless, I thought this was a good conversation. Thanks!

Same here, back in MLK Weekend this year I go up to Maine to see my grandparents, have this long discussion with my Opa about Trump. My Opa was a staunch conservative so when he backed Trump I was shocked, Rand Paul had yet to drop out so I was still stumping for Rand and hadn't really listened to much more than what the media had said about trump; I even trotted out the "xenophobic racist" bullshit. My Opa urged me to take a closer look and said he really believed in Trump.
He passed away two and a half weeks later. In the time between I had watched a bunch of Trumps speeches and whatever rallies he had; needless to say I was fully aboard the trump train. When I saw my Opa on his deathbed for the last time I told him not to worry; all his values of conservatism have been instilled in me, and even more so I told him I would be voting trump in November, I went further to promise I'd instill these values in my son, his great grandson, and preserve his legacy. He was doped up and couldn't speak but this statement from me elicited a grin on his face I'll never forget - my Opa understood my words and approved. He passed that night knowing his legacy will never die.

Trump2016....for you Opa, because you always wanted to MAGA

That's pretty cool. What statement in particular did you look up, if I may ask?
      [–]Megabran 3 points4 points5 points  (0 children)
In truth it was no one statement. It was around the time the favored son Yeb! dropped out. I was thinking "How can this le clown be making it this far?!" Looked into Trump's statements and the rest is history
      [–]SquanchIt 1 point2 points3 points  (0 children)
For me it was a bunch of things. Every single thing I looked into I found out it was removed form context, greatly exaggerated, or just a flat out lie.
The whole Obama founded ISIS is a good example. He stuck to his wording, but he media reported it as if Trump literally said "Obama literally founded ISIS." Everyone who isn't up their own ass knows Trump didn't mean he sat at a rebel table and declare ISIS an organization.

      [–]ElephantManatee 46 points47 points48 points  (8 children)
Could also be why he's not going balls out attacking Hillary emails. Concern troll Karl rove gets all pissy that Trump isn't hammering her on those points, but Don is letting the info build up so it's a much more compelling case before going balls out. If you hit hard too soon they'll say this is just the same old story they've been harping on forever.

The key though is taking the autists work and distilling it to something that's easy for the average person to follow and that's what Trump does best.
      [–]smalldickjimmy 6 points7 points8 points  (1 child)
I dont know. He has been tweeting about her emails a lot.
      [–]ElephantManatee 7 points8 points9 points  (0 children)
Yea but he hasn't launched a full war on them. He tweets and mentions it in his speeches to keep the story alive, but he doesn't get bogged down focusing on that one thing while ignoring his campaign. They would prob rather he went full out on the emails now so they could bullshit their way around it and kill the story. He's slow bleeding her before going for the knockout
      [–]flrojow 20 points21 points22 points  (0 children)
I mean, with the DNC leaks, the absolute, all-pervading corruption within the corporate media is no longer a subject of speculation.
The evidence is there, for all who are willing to see and think for themselves. There's no reason for Trump whatsoever to appease these notorious liars.

My favorite is when it is a "unknown source". They just make whatever the hell they want up and they are not accountable. I'm looking at you Morning Joe

Hey, it's not like they were saying it, it was other people. Smart people, you know, saying these things. It wasn't them making it up. They didn't do that. (they did)

Making things up and insinuate that Trump want to blow up the world with nuclear bombs
      [–]spaceman2121 15 points16 points17 points  (3 children)
well, there was a public story in NYT about people canceling their subscriptions because of perceived bias in the reporting
in another worldnews threat, people who weren't Donald supporters were bitching about how /r/politics is insufferable because of the blatant anti-trump posts
      Here's what will happen now:
      1. In a couple of weeks, anytime anyone hears an anti-Trump story, they're going to yawn and say "oh that's old news"
      2. Trump is going to go on the counteroffensive
      [–]bitchalotCA 9 points10 points11 points  (1 child)
Americans hate it when an individual gets ganged up on. Trump will use the debates to shine because he has control over the message and can deliver it directly to the public.

Saying one thing, doubling---tripling down, then backpedaling. passing the blame onto someone else...rinse and repeat... yeah that makes for unpredictability and the inability to figure someone out...
All of which are terrible qualities to have as a leader of any nation, much less the US.. More so it makes you look like a lunatic... maybe you should be running for the leader of N.Korea, that guy is all about unpredictability.

No. I don't vote because I'm a pacifist anarchist who sees government as the problem and not the solution. I've never voted because I don't believe the will of the majority should dictate to the minority.

No. I don't believe anybody has the actual capacity to govern a body with prudence, especially not a mob with no fully vested stake in the whole. Democracy in any form ultimately devolves into the grasping and greedy majority voting in their interests at expense of the minority.
I don't participate because I believe it's immoral. But morality is personal in this case, so I'm not condemning others for participating. It's a choice each person makes.
