Chris Smalling isn't as good as we all think he is and likely won't be our first choice centre back in a year or two. LVG's ultra conservative play covered up a lot of his shortcomings.

Often thought about this myself, he usually plays well for England but not nearly as good as what I have seen at United. I guess we'll see for sure this year, hope I'm proved wrong!

A defensive pairing of Smalling + Bailly is silly.

I predict they will create so many fouls that it might decide the outcome of our season.

We need a Ferdinand who can read the game, and have one of the tanks do his dirty work.

I hate to say it but most of Smallings fouls come from him losing his man. Have you seen him at corners, constantly tugging at a runners shirt.

Yes, you're right. Bailly is guilty of that as well though.

Rio didn't even need to make contact much. We need that.

Blind is the closest in that regard, but he doesn't really have the commanding presence or the agility that Rio had.

I get a bit annoyed every time I see DDG raging at the defense for stupid errors. And that happens way too often.

I think Bailly is more of a Vidic with much better distribution. I think we'll be waiting some time before we get a player as good as Rio again. If Stones is worth 47 million can you imagine what Rio would be worth today!

Ibra won't score as many goals as some people on here expect him to. Some people look at his scoring record from the past and think he'll replicate it. Not only is he getting older, he's playing in a much more difficult league, so he definitely won't be able to score as many goals for us this season. Not to say he won't be a very influential figure - I believe he will (in other ways such as sheer physical presence or link-up play). Obviously hope to be proven wrong though.

On a side-note, I absolutely loathe the word "destroyer" that many people use to describe defensive midfielders. It's popular, so I guess it's just me, but I can't take opinions seriously when people describe players as 'that midfield destroyer'. It sounds like a LEGO Star Wars battle ship, not a description of a footballer.

We're going to win the league this season. Too many people think we're going to be 2nd to another team but those teams also have first year managers. If anything it'll be harder to win the league in the following years. We're going to do it.

I think Liverpool will win the league. Klopp have had the time to implement his ideas, but the time since he got appointed is still short, so he can flow on the "new manager honeymoon"-wave. Their squad is maybe not great on paper, but we should have learned by now that quality on paper does not mean quality on the pitch. Some of the players they do have, Mané, Firmino, Coutinho, Sturridge, Origi are perfect for counter-attacking football.
