To be fair, @ the time the funding was going on because Sunni elements were fighting against Assad and the whole principle of the enemy of my enemy is my friend was in play. This is why it happened. Now it shouldn't have happened for sure. I wrote a paper in a masters class on Syria and suggested we assist Assad because the rebel forces were likely to become rather extremist rather quickly and violently. At least Assad protected the minorities in Syria, hell, Assad himself is an ethnic minority in the country, he is an Alawite! With ISIL, all minorities are valid targets for destruction, with Assad, only the groups who were chimping out because of ideological inclinations were valid targets and sure, Assad was heavy handed in dealing with protesters like his father was...but ask yourself this. Do you want a strongman like Assad who sometimes pushed down on violent resistance in his country harshly or do you want a group who is worthy of being called "literally hitler" of our modern times?
