One of the best analysis of MGS2 on YouTube. Insightful presentation of MGS2's brilliance as well as it's shortcomings, while cleverly sidestepping the controversial topic of whether or not the entire game exists within a simulation.

This video was how I discovered Super Bunnyhop, but he's done some great work since then that has really cemented him as one of the best independent games journalists on YouTube.

It's a good analysis for sure but the simulation topic is amazing. Outer Heaven Network has a stream where they play all the MGS games and one of the streamers, 'Dogg' does a great job of pointing out every instance of why everything that occurs on the big shell is a simuilation. It's insane.

Drk is a massive asshole and I no longer subscribe to the channel because of him.

His strength is in the analysis and writing. His video work and camera presence could use a second party to help direct and work with him, but it seems like he did this solo, which is still reasonably impressive. Definitely impressive in the content dept.

Incredible analysis. Even for me, who didn't play MGS1 or 2, only Peace Walker and MSG4... Have to admit I lost a lot not picking it up for PS2 back in the days.

Can someone tell me about the camera angles though? Which do you prefer... This locked, almost isometric angle or the over-the-shoulder from the other games? Just found there are some great camera angles in MGS2 and it's very interesting, wanted to know if it actually works well.

Fixed camera gives games a more cinematic feeling. MGS 3 was good marriage of both with over the shoulder and fixed camera for certain 'scenes' in the game. MGS4 and Ground Zeroes are completely over the shoulder and I think a lot is lost there considering how much of a film geek director Kojima is and what he did with certain fixed camera angels in MGS 1/2.

This is one of my all-time favorite video essays. It got me to fall in love with Metal Gear Solid, and convinced me that not only can games achieve literary depth, but that they already have.

I know I'm late to the party but I'll be damned if I let something as arduous as time keep me from voicing my opinions!

SBH made a lot of really cool points in this video and showed me a lot of things I didn't know about MGS2! He definitely gives a really interesting interpretation, but overall I can't say I'm a huge fan of the video.

Multiple times in this video he has this tendency to almost give a concrete explanation of something but he isn't willing to commit to making a solid assertion. He spends a deal of time talking about postmodernism in art but keeps his definition of postmodernism vague enough to fit MGS2 into it, because meta/ludonarratives has next-to-nothing to do with any of the various postmodern movements.

He mentions the Tanker Mission and says "maybe we were playing as Raiden playing as Snake", and just leaves the point hanging in the air without discussing the significance of whether or not that's the case.

Same thing goes for the "maybe the whole thing is a VR mission" undercurrent that runs through the whole video.

It's interesting to think about Snake's "infinite ammo" quip the way SBH chooses to, but we're talking about a game series that will comment on the type of games you have saved to your memory card. Kojima's weird streak is very well documented.

Fuck I really don't like this video. SBH can't commit to a solid interpretation but continually tells you "what's really going on". He brings up points and leaves them hanging in the air without really making good connections.

No wonder I had an extremely hard time understanding the game when I played it in 8th grade. Some of it because Swedish is my native language though.

I replayed the whole series from Metal Gear on MSX to MGS4 a couple of years ago. The story is still immensely complex and hard to get and this time I focused on the story. I clearly remember how confused I was after I completed MGS2; I had no idea what was going on. What was real and not? No goddamn clue... When I turned off the game I just sat there thinking for half an hours until I got up and continued to think about the game and the real world.
