Somewhere along the line, it received the meaning of "someone who fetishises Japanese culture. Think katana-collecting neckbeards who learned Japanese from anime (Thank you, bot.) and sleep with a waifu body-pillow.

Allegedly this is because 4chan moderators got salty at overuse of the existing internet slang for modern orientophiles, and set a word filter to replace it with 'weeaboo'.

A word ending in "-aboo" thus means someone who fetishises a surface understanding of something.

Wehraboos idolise the Nazi military, but lack understanding of it beyond the most basic 'everyone knows', games, 'pop-history', and shitty documentaries. Many documentaries are extremely shitty, admittedly, so that part isn't their fault. There's a lot of deliberately faked 'history' intended to make the Nazis look, if not good, semi-competent, so it's easy to lose track.

Similarly, a Teaboo would collect model soldiers in pith helmets, idolise Churchill, hang a Union Jack on the wall, wouldn't actually read Kipling but would probably have the books on his shelf, and would have definite Opinions on the value of a monarchy at keeping the lower orders in line eh wot.
