I don't really care about the 12-hour rule change. Think we'll see good posts with either.

I'm mixed on the update requests. Updates used to be my favorite part of /r/legaladvice, and I'm still not happy about locking them. I've seen the sorts of posts you mentioned, however, so I guess I can see where that could be a problem. I have a hard time being too angry about a change that seems designed to help people asking questions on an advice forum.

You guys are doing a good job. Thanks!

First, thank you.

I get the issue with update requests. There was a bit of controversy among the mods about this. Frankly, after the recent blowup about updates on /r/legaladvice, I didn't want to kick the hornet's nest.

Someone showed me a post from the other day where OP was in the sub, and there were several comments that said nothing other than "please update us." That kind of thing is a bit troublesome for the reasons I outlined above, and it doesn't really contribute to the discussion in the subreddit. It seems safe to remove it, and best for the OPs over in /r/legaladvice. Kind of hard to say no just because there might be controversy.

Missed those but I have seen a lot of "IANAL but that can't be legal" lately. I can see how all that can be distracting/unhelpful.

I think those would be alright here in BoLA, but they are pretty pointless in the main LegalAdvice subreddit. But that's on the LA mods to handle rather than us here.

Those drive me crazy personally, but they start to dip into the sorts of content policing that I'm not a fan of.

Makes sense. I love a good update as much as anyone, but our entertainment is secondary to the OP's legal issues.

Interesting. /u/grasshoppa1 what's your view on this?

I don't care one way or the other on the delay.

I fully agree with the ban on requesting updates. Updates are stupid.

Is the ban on requests for updates just for here, or for the main sub as well? I feel like people who provide good advice to an OP should be free to ask respectfully for an update when it's appropriate (when it wouldn't make things worse for the op, obviously.) That's not about entertainment: there's a certain level of compassion and interest in others that goes into spending your time voluntarily using your expertise to provide help to people who need it, and a desire to hear the outcome is only natural if you've taken the time to make a connection with someone who's in a tricky legal situation. I know at least some contributors sometimes will ask for an update out of genuine concern that things will work out well for the OP, not because it's interesting gossip. "OP pls deliver" posts aren't helpful, but is it possible to allow requests for an update alongside a substantive, constructive post, if that's something they want to do?
