Community rule discussion: 12 hour rule (self.bestoflegaladvice)

Hey folks,

The mod team has been chatting privately about the possibility of altering the 12 hour rule.

For those who don't know: the current rule is that posts from /r/legaladvice must be at least 12 hours old or locked before being posted here. This is to ensure that the OP of the linked thread is able to get plenty of advice and to discourage brigades.

This rule was put into place in the early days of BoLA because we saw an uptick in folks crossing over, and it was starting to cause problems in the main sub.

With the reset, we're looking over rules like this to see if they make sense as-is, or if we should tweak them. Currently, there's an idea on the board to reduce the 12 hour rule to 6, and I'd like to hear your feedback.

What do y'all think?

I think the main thing is that the original thread needs time to get actual help-oriented responses - if the commentary (or the pointing & laughing) starts too soon, the whole thing goes off the rails pretty quickly. 6 hours accomplishes that as well as 12, imo - I'm all for the change.

I mostly lurk here. If six hours is enough to ensure that no brigading occurs, I'd be happy with the rule change. Since a chunk of posts on the front page of /r/legaladvice are 6-12 hours old, though, it might be difficult to tell brigaders apart from genuine latecomers.

Then again, I'm not an /r/legaladvice mod or anything. As long as this sub keeps up the quality content, I'm fine with any rules you want to enforce.

12- hour rule seems pretty reasonable to me. Might as well keep it, if it is helping the problem.

The big concern is that it's stops some folks from posting. Every now and again we'll remove something that's only six or seven hours old, and it won't be reposted unless one of the mods does it. If six hours is enough to kill the problems, it might be a better compromise.

If it's not interesting or entertaining enough to hold interest across the full 12 hours, does it really deserve to be on BOLA?

Hmm, not that I know of. The only way that I know of is to remove the post and restore it later. The last time I went to do that, the person had already deleted their post.

Have them set for approval, approve it or else wait until the 12 hours then approve it? personally I like 12 hours, otherwise overnight posts won't be read yet before they start getting hit.

And while we are on ideas, I was thinking, why not an R2 type requirement, where we have to say why we are submitting it to BOLA. this will not only help spark different discussions, but in my mind help highlight truly quality posts.

That should actually be a pretty good way to do it, IMO. If you leave a note saying "we'll reapprove it in x time" that'll probably preempt the [deleted] occurrence a lot of the time.

Unfortunately, that's a bit unrealistic with nothing but a team of volunteer mods. A post I delete now for violating the waiting rule might be restored in 12 (or 6) hours, but there's a good chance that I won't be available, and it's tough to coordinate those kinds of things with whoever will be available.

I feel that so long as there is no evidence of more brigading occurring at 6 hours as opposed to 12, this is a welcomed change. By the six hour mark, most threads in LA no longer have legal questions being answered, so I say yes to the proposal on a provisional basis.

If the objective is still to limit the amount of BoLA-to-LA brigading, then it might be worth looking at the way the r/legaladvice front page and new page evolve.

Looking at the front page, a large majority of the posts are under two hours old, with a handful of posts as old as one day. If the objective of brigading is to be visible and to gather karma for low-effort responses, then even a few hours' delay will protect most front-page posts from brigades.

Looking at new, we're going through a page every hour and a half or so right now, but it drops way off overnight (US timezones) to maybe a page every eight hours. The 12-hour rule in place right now will protect the first several pages of new posts from brigading, and that page count will only grow as r/legaladvice gains more subscribers.

Either way: shortening it from 12 is probably fine. Six hours looks reasonable to me; I'd think even four hours would be sufficient right now, but six is a nice round number.

(I'm taking for granted that, even if BoLA is not a brigade source now, it will be again one day. Communities go through cycles.)

I'd keep 12 being at the arse-end of the world with typically a 12 hour delay for us here after posting due to sleeping between reddit visits.

I'm not necessarily advocating this idea - I'm sure there's mod tools that give access to stuff us civilian users can't see - but have you considered something like a rule that a certain part of the day has to have passed in order to post it? For example, allowing things to be posted to BoLA after midnight Pacific time since most discussion takes place in the evening, US time*. This would be regardless of whether 4 hours or 22 hours has passed.

*Again, no idea if this is true, or if another time frame makes more sense, or if it's just dumb. Just trying to think of interesting solutions that arent hard to moderate.

Your faith in reddit's mod support is pretty optimistic, but there really isn't much that we see that you don't.

That's not a bad idea in theory, but I'm afraid the implementation would be all but impossible.
