Little tidbit from the Independent's coverage of Shearer's transfer.

If Kluivert joins United, Andy Cole is likely to leave. Everton had agreed in principle a £4.5m fee with United if Shearer had signed and sources close to the Goodison club suggested that they will wait for Cole before looking elsewhere.

Didn't know this. Coley got his ankle broken by Neil Ruddock that season, and had generally been underwhelming. It was the following season (97/98) that he really started hitting his stride with the club.

It's funny how things work out. We had agreed a fee with Spurs for Solskjaer in the summer of '98 too. How different things would have been if that had gone through…

I feel like we could have won a few more CL trophies and Shearer would have won himself a few Ballon D'ors had he signed with us.

Love our 4 strikers but we could have had a Barca level of dominance during that period.

Not to mention how well that chemistry would have translated to national team.

actually Shearer was in a different class when comparing with Cole and Ole. Just like we are comparing Suarez,Lewan or Ronaldo with Lukaku,Giroud,Manzdukic...etc . Ofc we all love Ole and Cole but we cant deny Shearer was the best striker of England for over a decade

He could be our legend bomber if he joined us. No doubt about that.

Cole and ole were miles better than giroud, Lukaku and mandzukic combined. Would be more along the lines of comparing Higuain to Suarez/Ronaldo

He was amazing but we don't know that we would have won any cl's with him instead of ole and Cole.... We didn't win the CL because sheringham and ole were the best strikers in the world. We won it because the way that game played out, they happened to be in the right place at the right time through mostly luck.

I don't think you realise just how dominant Shearer was. In his prime he was better than Henry, RvN, Raul, Lewa, Benzema, Zlatan etc.

Ronaldo, Messi, Ronaldo aside I can't think of any other player I'd rather have as my primary goalscorer. The man was phenomenal in every single aspect of play.

Shearer as a goalscorer may have been better than those you named, but a better player than Henry and Zlatan in their primes? that's a bold statement and I really disagree on that.

Yes, and I say it without hesitation. RvN vs Henry is a debate, Shearer vs Henry is not.

Easily the best crosser on the list.

So dominant in the air he forced teams to completely alter their lineups and tactics to try and shut him down.

Deadly in the box, thunder of a long shot, fantastic first touch. The man had no weaknesses.

Not to mention one of the most intelligent strikers to play the game.

He was scoring Ronaldo/Messi rates consistently at teams nowhere near as dominant during an era where you could hack a player down without so much as a yellow card.

Add to that how well he adapted his game to stay dangerous despite injuries destroying his explosiveness.

I remember ole going to Spurs. We didn't know anything about it until until we turned up at the megastore and suddenly all of his merch was like 75% off clearance sale. Was in all the papers a day or two later
