In theory, I can see where their argument comes from - the US ultimately benefited greatly from it's intervention in both conflicts, it may have siezed both opportunities consciously as they were presented to it, I'd have to read more into that part of it.

The chief mistake, imo, is they use this fact as evidence that the US had a concerted policy and motivation in delaying intervention until Germany was a significant threat - ignoring that not only was the situation quite clearly more complex, but it puts the cart before the horse. It asserts a level of forethought that is relatively unlikely in the circumstances, and it narrows the motivation for US interest in both world wars to merely countering European hegemony, and not protecting US interests and security or those of their allies.
