I was in r/mcfc to see what their thoughts on Pogba and engaged in a discussion (self.reddevils)

"Just to compare this team against ours.

GK: De Gea vs Hart/maybe Ter stegen. De gea is quite obviously the better keeper out of these but not by an incrediblle margin.

LB: Shaw vs Clichy. Experience vs young. Shaw is probably the more talented player and will only grow but he is coming back from a pretty bad injury and Clichy is solid and will probably have a better year.

LCB: Baily vs Stones/Ota. Not seen anything of Baily to be honest but I'm very happy with our two here

RCB: Smalling vs Kompany. Even though he's injury prone we all know who the better player is.

RB: Valencia/Darmian vs Sagna/Zaba. I think our 2 both edge out Valencia and Darmian respectively even though Zaba has been declining. Since Pep has told him he's in his plans maybe Zaba could turn back into the Zaba from a couple years ago and be unstoppable.

CDM: Fellaini/Carrick/Schneiderlin vs The Ferns. Easy choice Fernandinho is better than all 3 put together. Fernando is as fine a back up as Scheiderlin.

CDM: Pogba vs Gundogan. Big one here and I think this one is very up to interpretation. I'd probably give Pogba the edge but its close and hard to compare the 2 different players.

CAM: Rooney/Mata vs Kdb/Silva. No question move on.

LW: Martial/Depay/Young vs Sterling/Nolito. Martial is probably the best out of the bunch but we have 2 very skilled playes to there one. I'd give it to them for having the one better player though.

RW: Lindgard/Mhki vs Sane/Navas. Start with the 2 yong ones it's no contest between who is better. Mhki has had only one good season but he does look quite good. I'll give this one to them but it's insanely cose.

CF:Zlatan/Rashford vs Aguero/Iheanacho/Jesus. I'd say another easy one. Aguero>Zlatan and Nacho is about the same level as Rashford and I don't know enough about Jesus to say.

So in my biased opinion its:

United:GK, CDM, LW, RW.

City: LB, LCB, RCB, RB, CDM, CAM, ST.

7 vs 4 in favour of city. If you also take into account Depth then we definitely take that as well."

Also hilarious considering how frequently Fellaini, Carrick and Ander dominate Yaya, Fernando & Fernandinho. Ander breaking Dinho's ankles is still so vivid in my memory.

Gundogan is a class player though and as the Citeh "fan" said, completely different type of player from Pogba. And he is very proned to injury too. But what is the point of comparing different players anyway??

I'd say Aguero is better than IBRA but IBRA can play a whole season. Not like its much to choose by though anyway

I'd say Schneiderlin is better than Carrick. Carrick is very useful in attack but in defence he is usually a pedestrian unless he's in the right place at the right time.

I don't think Aguero's best season even compares to Zlatan's 5 best seasons. He's been a hospital pass for far too long. Even Higuain's surpassed him on the national team.

I have a lot of time for Aguero and he's undoubtedly world class when fit and in form but I'd take Zlatan over him every time.

Aguero to be fair is the best striker in the premier league. If Ibra can get used to the PL quickly and stay fit unlike Aguero, he very well might score more goals and hence in the end be more worth to us than Aguero would be to them over the course of the season.

The only positions I'd let City have is one of the CB's, one of the DM's and the CAM.

We don't know how Zlatan will perform in the league but his record last season was incredible so for me him and Aguero will be very close for the choice.

That's a fucking beast of a team tbf! With Herrera, Yaya, Bailly, Lingard, Zabaleta etc on the bench, could beat anyone in the world. I have great admiration for the likes of Kompany and Aguero and KdB, regardless of them playing for shitty, I love watching those players.

I look at it this way. We finished level on points last season. Imo, which is naturally biased, we improved our squad more this summer than they did theirs. Obviously the only thing that matters is results but if you want to "break this down" that's how I see it

Honestly I think that's quite fair from that user.

When you go on a position vs. position basis then it's quite close between the two squads.

I disagree in defense. Haven't seen much of Bailly obviously but I think he's a better defender than Stones going on what I've seen. I'd take Smalling over Kompany too purely from a reliability point of view. Otamendi is a better player than Blind if they're playing to their potential but Otamendi only seemed to come good toward the end of last season. Mangala is dogshit and I'd rather have Rojo/Jones.

All that aside, I think it'll come down to how the managers get the team playing.

Also, what a load of people overlook is the age profile of the two teams. Not many players entering their prime in the City squad except for KdB and Gundogan really. A lot of players in their young 20's and a lot of players in their late late 20's/early 30's. Will be interesting to see how they gel under Guardiola and how his tactics fair in the league.

The only thing I completely agreed with was the CAM analysis. Everything else is wishful thinking. I'm not gonna say we are indisputably better at the other positions, but de gea is miles ahead of their keepers and if they can't admit that then they are delusional.

RB: Valencia/Darmian vs Sagna/Zaba. Zaba has been declining. Sagna's hair is shit. Pep said cut it or your out. Also told Sanga he was a poor mans Valencia.

CDM: Fellaini/Carrick/Schneiderlin vs The Ferns. Fernandinho isn't as big as Fellani, and lacks the range of Carrick. Fernando isn't fit to clean Fosu-mensah's boots unfortunately :(.

CDM: Pogba vs Gundogan. Big one here and I think I'd be lying to myself if Pogba wasn't the clear winner; especially as I prayed we would sign him when we were linked 4 month ago. Its by no means close but I think i'll make myself feel better about missing out by saying it's hard to compare the 2 different players.

CAM: Rooney/Mata vs Kdb/Silva. No question move on.

He made some good points. But Aguero and Kompany only play a maximum of half a season. Shaw is better than Clichy. Sané i haven't seen much of him but there is a contest between Lingard and Sané as opposed to what he is saying. Smalling was hands down better than Kompany last season. And the margin between Hart/Ter Stegen and De Gea is massive
