Tbf I think he's earned it, for this game at least. I also think Jose will be keen to show that he's willing to stick with some of the academy players.

I think this will be the initial first choice, once everyone's match sharp.

Carrick will be saved for specific games. That role will be rotated quite a lot with Blind and Morgan.

The most interesting one is Rooney. He will start in the team, but No 10 is the position we have most options for - Mata, Mkhi, Herrera, Pogba. He's going to have to bring his A game if he wants to stay a first team starter.

We have so many options next season! Mou will enjoy it.

I agree with Rooney point, I don't think he's anywhere near perfect, but neither is Mata and Herrera, both have their own set of problems to play there. Mkhi might be a great option there, but he was and I think bought to fill in creativity on the right side and Pogba is obviously going to inject energy, technicality and creativity in the midfield. Will be interesting to see how the season unfolds.

Personally, I would like Mata over Rooney but that's not going to happen.

Did I watch a different Schneiderlin last season? Why is he in so many predicted line ups?

We don't have anyone who plays in his role but he also didn't perform his role last season at all. He needs to play miles better than what he's shown so far to even be considered.

people are expecting his team of the season performances from his two saints seasons. I personally hope Jose can bring him to his best again.

the majority of our players werent really performing under LvG so im willing to give chances to most players.

I think we can all agree that with Paul a 4-3-3 would be ideal to get the best out of him immediately. Either Ander, Carrick, or Schneiderlin beside him on the right and either Mkhi or Mata at the 10, but it seems that it'll be pretty hard for Rooney to lose his place...

Pogba always seems to do his best work further forward and we saw how shackling him worked out for France.

4-3-3 is the dream in the long run for Pogba but I don't think we have the depth required for me to be fully comfortable playing it. We'd probably still need another addition or two in midfield for that to be the case and I don't see that happening this Summer obviously. Therefore the 4-2-3-1 just suits the squad better as of right now as it hides some of our depth issues in midfield and incorporates Rooney and Mata, which are still players that have to feature until Mourinho brings in replacements that are upgrades.

It'll be 4-2-3-1 to begin with for the next short period and who knows after that. Mourinho will inevitably make changes to his preferred lineup which may also include the formation.

No doubt we'll line up in a 4231 for most games but I think there's a good argument for trying a 352 on occasion. I know, I know, it's not worked with any real success in the PL to date. But with Conte and Pep in the league, I think we'll see a resurgence this season. I also happen to think that our current team is very well suited to it. Bear with me...

Wing Backs: Shaw's pace and attacking prowess are perfectly suited to a wing back's game. Darmian has plenty of experience as a wing back, but I think Valencia's experience as a winger puts him top of the pile here, so to speak.

Back 3: Obviously Bailly, Smalling and Blind are the favoured 3. With Rojo, Jones and Darmian, we've got ample players suited to playing in a 3.

Midfield 3: With 3 CBs, we'd have the freedom to play with only one DM, freeing up room for some combination of Mkhi/Pogba/Mata to roam forwards and spark some creativity. In a 4231, I feel like we aren't able to bring enough creativity from the middle of the park. Particularly if we're using Rooney as a 10.

Strikers: Playing with 2 strikers allows Rooney to leave the number 10 role. It also leaves more space for Rashford to prove himself, or even for Martial to play as a striker again.

For several reasons, I don't think this will be (or should be) our most common formation. But the ability to switch to a different shape would be valuable. I think we've got the personnel for 352 to be a serious option.

Positives: It shakes things up a bit when games become stale. It gets Rooney out of the 10 role. We've got some talented crossing wing backs.

Negatives: Players like Martial and Memphis wouldn't get much of a chance to play out wide. It might be too far removed from our regular 4231, leading to some tactical confusion.

Any thoughts?

He's been slightly underwhelming, yes, but that can happen for a number of reasons. He wasn't played consistently at all, and his style of play didn't really fit any of his midfield partners bar Herrera I think.

He's a ball winner and he needs a high energy creative player beside him, and that would be Pogba.

He's meant to be a ball winner but last season he seemed to always be behind the play and playing catch up. I've not seen anything from him to be impressed by yet to be honest. He needs to improve in nearly every area to be in a title challenging side. I want him to improve but currently he should be one of the players who has to earn it
