Great race, thought she lost it in the last 20.

Interesting how the BBC covered the race, one of the commentators wouldn't even say Efimova's name, simply called her lane 5.

England really hates Russia. More than the USA, even. Anyone know why?

The BBC crew are just very against drug cheats, they've been actively against Sun Yang* too.

[–]United KingdomNothematic 194

They're all former swimmers (except Helen Skelton) so they all feel strongly about it. One of the commentators was actually part of the vote to ban her before it got overturned by the IOC so you can imagine he's pissed.

Yian might be even worse. Cheater and a dick.

[–]United Statesmoarroidsplz 28

What's his story? I had heard that the drug was "added to the banned list after he was already taking it for his heart condition". I mean, this sounds like a coverup but what's the real full story?

A new substance, meldonium, was put on the banned substance list. A bunch of Russian athletes, including Maria Sharapova, "forgot" that it was going to be added and kept using anyways.

[–]United Statesmoarroidsplz 7

I wasn't asking about Efimova, for the record. Was Yian caught for the same thing?

He was taking trimetazidine, or TMZ. It's a stimulant.

He's been reportedly an asshole to his competition though - taunting, splashing them during workouts, trying to physically intimidate female swimmers, etc. There's also been reports of him acting well...I guess you'd say above the law? Traffic violations and things where he just thinks he can get away with stuff. (These are some examples that I've heard, at least)

Ye I feel sorry for all these top athletes that seem to have a very rare heart condition and the medication boosts performance. Terribly bad for them.

Like how they are against Lizzie Armistead missing not one, not two but THREE 'secret' drug tests.

Didnt watch this so i dont know if you are being sarcastic but other team gb athletes have gone on tv etc and called her 'at the very least very stupid' and other stuff implying they dont believe her. Most people think shes guilty but rules are rules

Lizzie armistead got a ton of shit through the coverage. They were talking about the missing drug tests when she was lining up to race.

Yian lol, smh.

[–]United StatesJenaxu 5

i think in this case it's more Efimova than general hate towards Russia

https://www.swimmingworldmagazine.com/news/yuliya-efimova-reportedly-tests-positive-for-meldonium/

If this was isolated, I'd agree with you. But if you read the Guardian and some other (more reputable) UK news sources, it just sounds like they are more willing to show their distaste for Russia than the US media is.

They get really annoyed if you put anything besides milk and sugar in their tea. Especially Polonium-210.

Nonsense. "England" (in this case you mean Great Britain) does not "hate Russia". All you're seeing here is a bunch of former swimmers who competed clean (and probably missed out on medals as a result) who are angry with people they think are associated with cheating.

"people they think are associated with cheating" AKA known drug cheats.

You might think so, I couldn't possibly comment.

The libel laws in the UK are very strict. 😀

Don't see how it would be libelous to label an athlete who has served a drug ban "a drug cheat". It's just a statement of fact.

[–]United Kingdommarauding_forward 36ポイント37ポイント  (12子コメント)

Yeah, there's no anti-Russia agenda, it's just a general distaste for drug cheats.

Especially since they're (almost?) all former competitors themselves.

[–]United Kingdommarauding_forward 16ポイント17ポイント  (0子コメント)

Yeah, that's right. Mark Foster and Rebecca Adlington are the two pundits and Adrian Moourhose is the commentator and they all competed for Britain at the Olympics.

[–]Tyalou 1

Spoiler : non native tired English speaker.

Well, there is a long on going conflict between the UK and Russia. I don't really know the detail but I've been with a Russian Girl for 5 years and she always told me that she didn't feel right about England. I think part of the reason is when the USSR fel appart, a lot of rich people drained the money out of the country and fled to the UK which sheltered them.

Recently (like 4-5 years ago) I remember Russia closing the library where you would find the English book in Moscow. Here again, it's vague but I was in Moscow at the time and due to political tension, I was unable to get an English book!

I'm not sure about England hating Russia but I'd say Russians dislike English which should easily translate into a reciprocate feeling from the UK...

If anyone has better / detailled explanation, you are more than welcome to share. My view on the topic is very blurry; or is it my 2 hours sleep last night?

Quick point, say Britain instead of England, there are three nations other than England within the UK. The BBC is the British Broadcasting Corporation

[–]United StatesFANGO 12

One of them called her "Efi-dopa"

Was the bbc coverage making a thing about the finger wag? The nbc coverage was doing its best to make it a big dramatic thing

They were talking about how King was staring at her before they went out but other than that, they were mainly talking about how they didn't want Efimova to win.

Hell of a statement by King. Speaking out against doping is strong, but proving it in the pool is even more powerful!

Anyone have link to that interview where she calls her out

She doesn't really even call her out that much, and it's only when the interviewer blatantly baits her with a highly leading question. The media just wanted a dramatic story.

I'm glad I wasn't the only one thinking that

It would be hilarious if King tests positive for something now.

Yea, she better actually be clean at this point. Otherwise this is REAAAAAALLY gonna haunt her.

I highly doubt she would be making these remarks if she thought there was any chance of showing up positive.

cough Lance Armstrong cough

Technically speaking, Armstrong never actually tested positive for anything.

[–]United StatesStefferdiddle 21

Which is really the only statement he ever made about it too. At least, until Oprah turned the screws.

Oh Oprah turned nothing. He just set up his admission of guilt with her to try to feign some sympathy from fans

He tested positive at least once, but he wasn't penalized for it at the time because he had an excuse.

He gamed the system, possibly 3 times. The first, it was found out later he had a bogus retroactive therapeutic use exemption for testosterone crème for saddle sores. The second he was caught with EPO from frozen urine from 1999 many years after the fact, got those results thrown out for procedural flaws. The last was a former teammate claimed that Lance bragged about getting "popped" but they took care of it after he made a big donation to the ICU. Lance did make $100K+ donations to the ICU in the past.

I don't see someone gaming the system... I see someone playing the game.

The thing I will never understand about people and Lance is that they somehow think he was the only one. Or that there were only a few. Practically everyone was doping. They took the Tour from Lance but giving it to someone else is almost impossible. The next non-doping person is somewhere past 15th place.

Which is why it wasn't give to anybody else.

The thing I will never understand about people and Lance is that they somehow think he was the only one.

Not this shite again. Literally no-one thinks this.

[–]Butthole__Pleasures 2ポイント3ポイント  (0子コメント)

I only remember him denying his own doping, not railing against it at every chance he had to be near a microphone.

I think everyone would agree, but thinking there's no chance you'll show up positive and actually being clean aren't really the same thing. Supposedly "everyone" does it because the tests are behind the curve in accuracy.

Well, keep in mind King is an NCAA athlete and in my opinion their list of banned substances is more extensive and enforced more than the IOC's. The chances of her being clean are pretty darn high considering how strict the NCAA is.

I don't know. About 3 or 4 years ago, I had to look into NCAA drug testing and it was supposed to be very weak. Mostly, of the cheap urine testing during competition. Hardly any blood testing and not much out of competition testing, which is how most athletes use PEDs and get caught. I think they only had a $3M budget for their entire testing program, which is tiny for the amount of athletes they have to cover.

You should take a historical trip through /r/mma in the last few months.

I hope so too.

We're only starting to learn about long term effects of doping.
The sprinter Ben Johnson for example was still able to do competitive 100m times, prompting organizations to consider longer term bans from competition.

This felt like watching Rocky IV, the tan supermodel doped-up russian who had was bribed back into the olympics losing to the plucky toothy girl from Indiana.

[–]United Statesbrenobah 184

The swimming gods are just and good.

[–]United Kingdommarauding_forward 130ポイント131ポイント  (26子コメント)

I'd agree with you if Sun Yang hadn't just won gold himself.

[–]European Unionxcvbsdfgwert 43

There should be an adjusted medal tally with people like Sun and Efimova removed from the classifications, and medals redistributed accordingly. Call it the "Medal-Tally-with-Political-Doping-Blindspots-Removed". Clearly these charlatans would have had lifelong bans without significant political support.

All in good time, Efi's ban is just on hold until the investigation is complete. She'll get shut down when WADA are done and her medal will be stripped. Just a shame that she steals the rightful winners of their time in the sun at the games.

If a medal is stripped do they give it to the person who finished under? Like her silver would go to the person who got bronze, and fourth would move up to bronze.

If they were from small or poor countries they wouldn't be anywhere near the Olympics.

[–]United StatesSteamy_afterbirth_ 13ポイント14ポイント  (5子コメント)

I hate Sun Yang so much and I don't know why. I know cheating has something to do with it.

I'd imagine it's because he's a known cheater who just got a gold medal and the admiration of his country. It's kinda shitty when you think about it.

It's because he's an asshole. He was splashing people in the pool before the races, and tonight he held up the events with his ridiculous showponying.

Also his tiny head and meth teeth.

"I guess what I'm trying to say is, if I can change, and you can change, everybody can change!"

-Lilly King IV

Except... No. Her post-race interview wasn't an olive branch, she poked at Russia again: "I wanted to show that the US can compete clean."

It looked like she tried to dodge the question but the interviewer asked her about it specifically.

Exactly. She actually tried to handle it with a little grace, but that interviewer was desperate for controversy.

"We just spent the last 10 minutes talking about the doping thing. We're going to need a quote explicitly about doping."

I thought that was just the right amount of shade - if she had wagged her finger again it would have been a little bit too much. Instead she just came right out and said what she needed to say.

She said that after the reporter pressed her for it. (Paraphrased)

"Did you make a statement?"

King: "I hope so. Winning gold is a statement."

"..But I meant the Efimova thing, did you make a statement about that when you won?"

King: "Oh, sure. Hopefully people saw that you can keep clean and win and thats how it's supposed to be."

She's the media darling because of it, too. Probably a smart and potentially lucrative idea on her part.

[–]United StatesRiderz_of_Brohan 28ポイント29ポイント  (1子コメント)

Good for her honestly we always could use some more flair in sports

[–]United StatesRiderz_of_Brohan 12ポイント13ポイント  (0子コメント)

Well Yeah she's telling her to change. Just like Rocky

Mmmmm how do I put this nicely....EAT SHIT RUSSIA

Katie Meili! I went to college with her, very proud of her

A bunch of my friends used to lifeguard with her in high school. I only met her a couple times but she was super nice.

she was my baby sitter, I'm very proud of her.

She sat on my baby once. I'm proud of her too!

My wife is having a baby and I saw her on tv, I couldn't be more proud

The Russian will have to stand on a podium side by side with Americans and hear our anthem.

Justice.

She lives and trains in the US. I'm sure she hears it all the time and doesn't really care.

[–]Heard and McDonals Islandschubbyurma 50

SHHHHHH DONT SPOIL THE JUSTICE

It is nice when someone who plays by the rules actually wins over someone who cheats and tries to cut corners to be the best

[–]United Statesmoarroidsplz 15

Yeah, everyone in the crowd booed when Efimova was introduced.

Yup, looking forward to the crowds booing Gatlin and Gay as well.

The look of pure bitterness on Efimova's face...I'd be lying if I said it didn't make me smile at least a little.

[–]United Statesmoarroidsplz 59

The booing from the crowd when her named was called at the start of the race gave me a justice boner. Part of me wished that happened at the medal ceremony as well.

EDIT: Uh oh, looks like the Russians are mad that the world knows their country has a state-sanctioned doping program.

USA! USA! USA! USA!

Well, Rio Harbor could do with a nice fleet painted white.

As someone who lives in her hometown, I'm fucking stoked. This is so fucking awesome. I can barely drink my beer I'm smiling so much.

DUDE I live in Evansville! WHOLE FAMILY IS SO STOKED, I WAS SCREAMING AT THE END. I've known for so long she had it in her and I'm so fucking unbelievably proud.

Didn't she get into two different events too? I thought it was a big deal with her just getting to the Olympics at all. Just not expected from here.

She's in the 200m breathstroke as well. Yeah this was her first time trying out for the Olympics so we watched that as well, she's just blown by every stage.

Here's to hoping she strikes Gold Again!

Dude, I don't even live in Evansville and I woke people up with how much I was yelling!

Busch Light is flowing on the West Side tonight, baby!

Don't know her either. But I'm a west sider, and it's been awesome seeing all the banners in yards. Oh, I'm drinking Tin Man....

Is the cafe leche any good? I've been wanting to try it.

That's one of my favorite Tin Man brews. Really creamy.

Most people like it. I'm a porter/stout snob, so I'm not as keen on it as the average person, but I will quickly buy a growler. However, it is pretty good and easily drinkable. And it's currently not available. It might return in September or October.

Gotcha. Thanks! So you're saying the ones on the shelf at my local liquor barn are probably pretty old since its seasonal?

They shouldn't be (and I'm a fan of aging anyway). The Liquor Lockers I frequent don't have any. But Tin Man had it on tap quite recently; I know at least 3 months ago.

Evansville Resident Here too...currently partying on the West Side!!! Woot!

Same here! Don't know her personally but it's awesome someone from Evansville is bringing home gold!!

Even sweeter that she edged out Russia who sucks, and let's not forget Katie Meilei bronzed too! Well done for the USA.

Sucks that Katie had her silver taken by a cheater though.

If y'all think that these Russians who got popped a few years back are the only 'cheaters' in the Olympics, you're in for a brutal awakening.

Plenty of the American athletes are doped or have doped. Plenty of athletes all around the world are doped or have doped.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_stripped_Olympic_medals

Basically, the entire USA Mens sprinting team at rio has been caught doping, some of them repeatedly:

http://www.jamaicaobserver.com/news/Drug-tainted-US-sprinters-lead-Rio-challenge

They probably are, but it's hard to attack someone who has never been caught. On the other hand, a lot of Russian athletes in Rio (including Efimova) were caught multiple times (including this year!) and let off the hook for political reasons.

They probably are, but it's hard to attack someone who has never been caught.

Gaitlin, Merritt, Gay. Not bashed. Not even mentioned. You still so sure about what you said?

In the UK at least Gay and Gatlin are pretty much vilified by media coverage and general public opinion. Gatlin in particular for his brash behaviour and lack of contrition post-ban. If you read up on Dwayne chambers pre-2012 you'll see that he had almost zero support as a result of his drugs ban and was considered a huge embarrassment.

[–]United StatesStefferdiddle 9

Thanks for that link. Ross Rebagliati, is still my favorite on this list. Stripped for testing positive for pot. Restored because it's pot. :)

That one was great. A snowboarder who smokes pot!? I'm shocked! Shocked, I say!

Yeah. US running and cycling are a bunch of cheats.

But there are no swimmers recently and certainly not any American swimmers.

How many had state-sponsored doping programs?

The United States Olympic Committee buried 114 positive American tests from 1988-2000. Is that 'state sponsored' enough?

And that covers the time period before Marion Jones, Tyson Gay, John Drummond, Justin Gatlin, Tim Montgomery, Jerome Young, the Balco THG crew etc. etc.

This is the closest I'll feel to watching a real life rendition of that Rocky movie

I so badly wanted King to wag her finger once she won even though I know how unsportsmanlike it would be.

I'm impressed she was able to refrain from it with all the emotions going through her.

I was desperate for that too, or even a number 1 again but I guess it would be bitchy.

Well, she tried to Efimova and it didn't work.

[–]United Statescgludko 15

Like Rocky 4 but in a swimming pool.

Between the whole King/Efimova and Le Clos/Phelps thing, this has to be the most drama-filled event I've watched all day.

This was the best rivalry filled night. My adrenaline came crashing down hard a while after it was all over with.

[–]United StatesMumakata 13

Bbc announcers threw shade at Efimova before the race. I loved it.

Huge justice boner right now

All that booing when Efimova came out before the race was craaaaaaazzay. That's gotta affect your performance. That, and your drugs running out...

Seriously though, way to go King.

P.S. Ruta Meilutyte, I know you'll be back! 2020 for the gold.

So proud of my old classmate and friend! She bullied me in Algebra 2 and now she's going savage in the Olympics. She's got a future ahead, I'm proud as fuck that she stood up against cheating and proved it in the pool. Best of luck Lilly!

P.S. Alex King you're still a skinny white nerd and you suck at cornhole

edit: I didn't mean it I swear

Flake?

Bonus fun fact about doping in olympic. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Doping_at_the_Olympic_Games

United States: 19

Russia: 13

Then we can just wonder how big the russian number should be after all the info, we have gotten about russians and their doping :]

I have no idea, it was just a funny thought.

Forgot about that bad year for Austria at the Winter games. I'm 100% against doping, so I'm not about to defend the US number, but it's the state sponsored incidents that bother me the most.

Did anyone notice anything about Lilly's suit? It was all my mother's friend was talking about, he was screaming that it was an embarrassment and that you could see her vagina.

While she broke an Olympic record.

He was convinced everyone would be talking about it.

No one is talking about it.

[–]AustraliaGreat_Pale_Lobo 21ポイント22ポイント  (4子コメント)

well that is embarrassing... for him.

I pointed it out after like an hour that no one was talking about it. My mom agreed with him despite not even seeing the suit so everyone just told me to shut up.

This is like the day after we got into a huge argument about politics where it was literally me against four other people and I found out he was a fucking birther.

Dear god. I feel your pain though, I have a nutcase uncle so I go through that every time I go back home for family events.

I actually saw it too. But I don't care so much. I mean, so many nipples bleed through shirts too it's just part of it all lol

I didn't see anything, 'cause she had on the swimsuit under her swimsuit that covered stuff up.

I noticed it. I think it was just the suit design that's darker in the bikini shape area. But it was definitely noticeable and I had to do a double take.

Edit: image of the offending suit design

Thanks, spent about a minute trying to figure out why the damn video wouldn't start.

Is this before the race on the close up?

Before the race, like right before they jump in. I thought he was saying the Russian's pink suit looked bad but he was fixated on Lilly. Like, even after she won he said it was an embarrassment and that she'd be harassed in the age of social media.

It's two in the morning, and no one on social media has said a goddamn thing about her swimsuit. Victory to the non-birthers.

Anybody else see that awkward moment when King drifted over to Efimova's lane? Seems like she realized it after a bit and immediately swam to her right side and jumped over to hug Meilei.

I get the doping thing and all, but man NBC's coverage of it like it was a cold war duel felt wrong.

No platinum metal?

No amount of doping can overcome human motivation and will for victory

Can anyone make me a gif of the pissed off Russian taking her cap off at the end and tossing her hair around? I need this because of reasons.

[–]United Statesthe_cunt_muncher 1ポイント2ポイント  (0子コメント)

It's funny that most of these US swimmers I'm sure had no problem swimming with Jessica Hardy who was banned from the Beijing Olympics but then swam in the London Olympics.

[–]Libruh 1

On mobile she's pointing at the headline, anybody else notice this?

streamable anywhere?

Yet russian swimmer took silver. And she's clean, because anti-doping has every russian athlete by the balls, and every russian is playing by wada's rules these games.
I think it should prove something.
You Americans are real mean (with top comment being "EAT SHIT"). Olympics should be about unity. My best friend's boss, an olympic gymnastic gold champion says that Olympics are not the same thing he viewed them as growing up.
I stopped watching Olympics for last 12 years, aside from some figure skating.

Congrats Lilly and USA! A little bit sad with Meilutyte's performance(me and whole country was expecting a medal) but hey at least that rat Jefimova got another silver haha.
