Dad was a very successful pharmaceutical exec. Was worth 5 crores in 1987 + a monthly salary of Rs 15k / month + 2 cars...all provided by the company.
We were the first to have a "big" (29 inch) TV in the entire street, foreign vacations all that. Till I turned 15, I had no idea what it was like to eat at a normal decent restaurant, travel in a train or even get my hair cut in a non 5 star hotel.
All this was in the period 1985-1995? At a time when even owning a scooter was big, owning two cars and that much assets and that crazy high monthly salary must have put us in the 0.5% or something.
Another perk was, dad made a lot of important political and bureaucratic connections, came handy for stuff like college admissions or tatkal passport renewal, nothing like walking into the RPO with a letter from the DIG of the state police, you got treated like royalty.
We also had an army of staff, a driver, a stay at home lady for helping with chores (we were never allowed to call her maid, so old habits die hard), a stay at home cook and a gardner.
Thankfully though my parents ensured we were grounded, we were drilled to treat everybody with respect, every Diwali and NY we would visit an orphanage where I would have to give up my fave toys and clothes (moms idea of training us not to have any attachments) and generally money never went to my head.
