When Sony became heavily involved, did they have any input (or say) on the final product? Is this still completely your vision?

Sony has been super cool to work with, but mainly just because they haven't been involved in development, you know? We're still sort of the underdog with Sony, and in the general AAA (for obvious reasons). If NMS is a success, I think that probably will have a real impact in terms of how a lot of people in larger publishers view indie games. People generally think of NMS as a Sony title, but we're still just a self funded indie studio - it's kind of a crazy situation :)

Reminder that Sony didn't fund them, just did the entire marketing.

Yeah but marketing isnt for free - if you look at development vs marketing costs you see the second one is mostly always the biggest issue on AAA titles

Considering that the first footage i saw of NMS was on the Late Show with Stephen Colbert, i'd say that they did more than what people are used to.

AAA devs need to take a page out of your guy's book. With the Day 1 patch it is clear you guys are passionate about what you do, AND you listen to gamers and what they want in a game (freighters, base building, pets O_o). I've been waiting for this game since I was ten years old. A big thank you to Hello Games from my ten year old self!

Edit: there are good AAA devs too.

Wait there are pets now??

Part of the new patch, feeding animals can lead to being friendly with them, them showing you where valuable resources can be found, can turn into your pets, and even shit out resources for you for feeding them.

Well that just put down a lot of conspiracy theories!

Hey Sean, are you guys ever considering adding ground vehicles? Also portable campsites? That would be amazing.

Could uh, could you do something like Burnout again?

I mean not Burnout exactly, and certainly not something exactly like Burnout 3 - but I mean, something real close.

I have a recurring dream that I am back working on Burnout 3. Normally that I'm playing the game, and we've made it so every race ends with a crash junction. Then I wake up in a cold sweat. Games dev does things to you.

Unsure what you worked on in BO3, but that's seriously the best racing game ever made.

I skipped so many college classes my soph year to play it.

i 100%ed that game so many times because people kept overwriting my saves. The only negative to that game is you can't easily tell which save slot is already used when starting a new game.

All I want is a pc version, please please please!

Are ringed planets still in the game? Love ya Sean!

What the hell is going on here? This is one of the fastest rising posts I've ever seen.

This game has been injected with liquid hype since it has been announced, and it's release date has been pushed back several times, making people extremely eager to play it.

How close is the game coming out compared to the original idea you had of NMS?

I think really close... I think? I was kinda posting about that today, going back to early versions of the game:

Will PS4 and PC Universes be linked in any way?

PS4 and PC players are using two different servers. We are running a control experiment to see who names things the most juvenile things... Let the games begin!

The seed of the universe is the same but i don't think both can meet each other online.

How drunk were you guys in your live stream today?

Yeah, so everyone thinks we were high or drunk :( Just hadn't eaten today, and am operating on zero sleep. It's an ok buzz. 5/10. Would not sleep again.

Please take care of your health, if you die we will all have a suicide pact...

So the real question would be how drunk are you GOING to be once this all gets released

You guys looked like you were enjoying yourselves. And I liked that you seemed proud of what you created which solidifies that you guys are trying your hardest!

Hey Sean, In an old trailer I saw huge snakes/wurms, are those still in the game?

Also have a nice day!

Oh man, I hate questions like this, because like wouldn't you just rather discover for yourself? Huge creatures are out there, and I haven't seen them on streams yet. They are rare.

Yes, I've seen them in streams, but they were glitched in the same way you sometimes see fish being glitched.

One of the people who got it early showed a space worm floating in the sky

Hey Sean,

How often do you and your coworkers read /r/nomansskythegame?

Some of the team read it for sure, and then post me the weirdest stuff :) OK sso I'll admit there have been times, my lowest on the project, where I've looked at the subreddit and it's cheered me up and kept me going. But there have been times I've looked on there and despaired - and just thought "how can we ever live up to the expectations of people who having been waiting for this game for 3 years"

Hey Sean,

How often do you and your coworkers read the Steam forums for No Man's Sky?

please stay away theyre dangerous

I'm sure they've had a laugh at the ridiculous neckbeard outrage there.

Will your glorious beard be shaved now?

So basically my beard is a disguise. I'm totally going to shave it off when this game is done, and burn every check shirt I own (5?) and hopefully no one will ever shout "No Man's Sky FOV Slider?" at me in the street. ever. again. in. my. life.

If anyone does have a suggestion for new look, I'm totally open to that. Beard and check shirts is pretty much all I got... same as everyone else who works in games :)

Any plans for VR support in the future?

Simulation theory is pretty much confirmed. Fuck this world I'm gonna go live inside the No Mans Sky universe.

Really hoping for this myself. Elite Dangerous was a whole new game in VR, and NMS seems like a great fit (minus some possible issues with movement on land)

Hi Sean. Hope you're well. Sorry. You've worked so very hard in bringing this game to life and put up with intense media & fan pressure very well (all for some unaccomplished idiot to write mildly humorous satirical erotic fiction about him). Would be interested to hear how you reacted. I hope you liked it tho.

I do have to ask a question, so... Wanna grab dinner sometime? ;)

Will No Man's Sky on PC have FOV options? Or at least a higher default than the PS4 version? Literally the only thing keeping me from preordering...

Never played it, can I build a zoo??

An animal sanctuary yeah, you can rescue and visit all sorts of animals

[–]koalas_arent_bears 30ポイント31ポイント  (5子コメント)

Yeah "rescue" animals, the same way you "rescue" enemy combatants & equipment. Ohh that poor abused T70 tank, I'd better rescue it and give it a home where it will be loved.

No matter how many critters I abducted rescued the sanctuary didn't get more full, so what happened to the other 30 donkeys? Were they food? Now that I think about it, there was no visible means of food production on mother base, and a steady supply of fresh meat coming in... oh jesus, they were eating the animals.

Petting zoo. A lot of the game is just free roaming and air lifting animals for your petting zoo.

Is the PC getting a midnight release?

The reality is that we're still here working on it right now. There's no conspiracy, we're just racing to get all the extra options and stuff we want. PS4 comes out tomorrow and we'll just try to pretend it's a normal work day! Best guess right now is 6pm GMT on Friday, but we'll keep you up to date as we get closer.

I'll tell you a funny story about PC. I was here late yesterday, and I had to take a break and do an interview with Playboy (!) - and the guy was like "what are you working on when you go back downstairs?" and I was like "compatibility for ATI opengl drivers", and he said "ummm.... could you make something up. That sounds pretty nerdy". I always knew I wasn't Playboy article material :)

The beard is all the material you need

I'm pretty sure if you mine in Sean Murray's beard you'll find Plutonium.

Do you know which issue? I'm really looking forward to seeing your centrefold.

Hahah, the entirety of the NMS subreddit would disagree, i promise you.

Instead of ati opengl drivers, work on vulkan. All us AMD users would love you if you do that

I need to know this as well. the number of times I've checked the steam store source code just to see if the 1PM EST release time has changed is bordering obsessive.

EDIT: Sean if you answer this I promise I'll stop tweeting at you asking about it.

    Hey Sean

Congrats on release this week! Many people have noticed that you guys seem to really be trying to aggressively manage expectations.

Can you just talk about balancing expectations/hype in the lead up to release based on your experience so far?

What might you do differently for future titles?

REAL TALK - so obviously the hype is terrifying. I mean, I have had this hanging over me for three years since we announced. I get like 3 hours sleep a night, but like I can't sleep even if I was home so ¯_(シ)_/¯. It's catch 22, if we hadn't announced when we did, we probably would have quit the project without the community supporting us... but god... should I have passed up Colbert? Or E3? I dunno. Every time we showed the game we always assumed people would suddenly not like it anymore... but instead the hype would just get crazier. In an alternate timeline, imagine if we could just be showing it for the first time tonight and launching tomorrow? Imagine how fun that would have been...

The game at worst will prove that an indie developer can make a game that not only looks like a AAA title, but also takes risks that only the indie game sector is willing to do. It looks god damned impressive and I cant wait until Friday!

It drives me insane how much you disbelieve in yourself. The work you have done is incredible. Some people say they have been waiting 3 years for this game when I have been waiting all my life since playing the original Elite. Ignore the negative entitled kids bringing your moods down. This game lives up to my expectations. I have followed you since VGX and I am so happy you made every decision you made. Enjoy this! I look forward to seeing the game expand and evolve.

Do you think our real universe is procedurally generated or perhaps a simulation?

So Elon Musk asked me this (NAME DROP!). I said if I was Elon Musk, then I'd be pretty sure it was right? Like load up the holodeck with the disk where I get to colonise mars and make self driving cars... So I think he almost certainly is, and then I'm an AI bot I guess? In his simulation? Controlled by a giant AI that's smirking to itself whilst I give this answer....

Hahaha, "how nihilistic has the development of No Man's Sky made you?"

There is theory a that if we are to a find a repeating sequence or pattern within Pi, we may have reached the CPU processing limit for the simulation of our universe.

    Hi Sean

Did the flood that struck your offices materially affect development? Would NMS have been a different game without it?

Looking forward to tomorrow. I've been waiting for three years. Thank you for your dedication

This does not answer the whole question, but Sean talked about it a little on a Gamespot interview from 2014.

I got a call christmas eve night saying "Your office is flooding", basically... And we were actually on the ground floor with our PCs on the ground, and they were like, blowing up and exploding and things like that. We had stuff backed up, and at the time we've kinda of said "Don't worry guys, we haven't lost anything!", but the reality is that you have. You just don't know how much, and you also don't want to say it because people are gonna go "Forget about it, it will never come out. It looked crazy anyway." So we were like "It's all fine!", but it did set us back a while.

    Source

Didn't he release a trailer for the game and then after the flood he said he would have cancelled the game if the trailer wasn't out?

How did the development of the game affect you physically and mentally?

Hey there Sean (and the rest of the team)

A question about PC, how far is modding supported?

And is there a anti-cheat system in place?

    Thanks :D

Do you plan for any mod support on PC in the future?

Hello Sean, I'm the one whose thread you linked in your recent blog post, which was titled "What do you do in No Man's Sky and other questions - Answered", and new moderator on the No Man's Sky sub-reddit! It's so great to finally have the opportunity to ask questions, its been a long time coming!

You mention being tight-lipped on the PC version, and you've got your reasons, but will you be tight lipped in this AMA? I'm very interested to know how the PC version has been coming along, and what settings we'll have access to.

Side-question, you mentioned years ago that you hadn't found a planet you'd rather live on than Earth (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n0uYnwqlslU) - has this changed?

Whenever devs are tight-lipped, it's normally just because they literally, legally, can't talk about a thing. Man, you would surprised how wrapped up most devs are in contracts and nonesense. Often for instance lots of devs will have a clause that says "you literally can't say the name of platform X". Knowing this it's really funny watching interviews where devs are squirming trying not to the word Wii or whatever when being asked about some industry thing :) - you see us say things like "well the thing about supporting... that particular console is..."

A few questions from a uni student looking to get into programming with a compsci major :

    1. How the hell do you get from not knowing how to program anything (where I'm at now) and being able to code properly for a game/at industry level? I've been in classes for various programming languages (matlab, Python) and I feel like the only skill I learned was using google and copy+paste, not actually how to program

    2. How did you get a job in the industry straight out of uni? The people I know in 3rd/4th year compsci say that finding a good job (like one at EA) is insanely difficult because of the competition+hiring expectations. In a similar vein, what could any compsci student do to set them apart from the rest on a resume so they could get a job straight out of uni?

Thanks for reading, love the game btw and can't wait to play it

I can help you with that first one. :) Stop copy-pasting from google. Whenever I'd google code I would handwrite it all and make sure I understood at least the general idea of what I was writing, if not exactly how it worked. Never copy paste.

Hi Sean! You seem to have a lot of pride in your game, an almost infectious level. I read the day one patch notes, and it's amazing how much you're adding. What else do you and the team hope to add to the game, other than freighters? And how will base buliding and freighters work? Will others be able to see/use them?

Here are questions I posted earlier in another thread...

    Some Questions.

1- The team. We've seen conference talks by Innes McKendrick, Grant Duncan, Charlie Tangora, Paul Weir that provide great insight into the details of the game. How are devs like David Ream and Ryan Doyle involved in NMS development? Will we see more behind-the-scenes talks about the concept, coding, and creative work of NMS?

2- The business. It seems NMS & HG has faced legal issues (trademark, patent) and business necessities (taxes, contracts), and natural disasters like the flood over the years. How do these inhibit or strengthen the creative process and team? What advice would Sean give to other small indie studios?

3- The personal. Sean wrote about "loving the crunch" in Eurogamer which was somewhat controversial. A challenge in any business is work/life balance. What does Sean's wife think about all this? How does Sean as "mastermind" and manager get the best work from his team?

4- The success. How will Sean know if the game is a success? By his personal sense of satisfaction? Response from critics and reviewers? Response from industry peers? Sales and popularity? Longevity?

Did space whales get in to the game?

Hi Sean, absurdly hyped for NMS! With NMS gaining so much traction - despite its indie status on PS4 it's being given the billing of a major AAA title - would you consider expanding HelloGames into a multi-project studio, or do you prefer more of a Pixar/Naughty Dog single-game style environment?

Initially I think we'll all be supporting NMS. But there are other ideas we've got rattling around in our heads too. I think video games is just such a largely unexplored field. There's very few studios that pull off the two game thing, but supporting one game and then kicking off something new - that's doable right?

Sh*t, I just remembered, we've got another thing we're already working on that's unannounced. It's a small experiment, but hopefully you all might like it :)

Maybe we can be the Johnny Depp of studios :D - do a mixture of big stuff and indie stuff? :D

Will there be random event such as stars exploding or large astroids etc?

Will players from PC and PS4 play in the same universe?

    Hi Sean,

I've heard rumors of the possibility of an API at some point for at least Atlas data, will that be a thing?

It could be for sure. We were talking today about just having a twitter bot that tweets discovery names at random. We've just been glued to the screen all day, watching names come in. Game isn't out... but we had like 160k discoveries uploaded today... so... :o

HOLY SHIT. Do you know the scope of how many players have contributed to that? That's a massive number for the game not even being out. Please tweet what the first day discoveries number is, I'm curious to see how many millions it hits.

Given the multi-player connectivity features in the engine (which have very little chance of being used), do you guys have plans to perhaps expand on that side of the game after most people have had a good single-player experience?

If not full multi-player, are you at least considering ways for you to "find your friends" in-game?

Hi Sean! How often do you plan on updating your game? How large can we expect some of these future updates to be?

EDIT: Also I've been super hyped for this game since your first E3 presentation and I plan on making tons of videos on it...

EDIT 2: Congrats on becoming the 4th most upvoted AMA!

    EDIT 3: 3rd, closing in on 2nd...

    Hi Sean!

Been really looking forward to NMS for a while now. Are there any plans to bring VR support?

How did this get to the top, with so many comments, so fast? One hour, 4000+ comments? I have never seen such a thing...

Hi Sean! What books or pieces of Sci fi from your childhood gave you the most creative inspiration while making No Man's Sky?
