I do not believe these 7.2 million tokens are legitimate -- their number does not match the actual ~72,000,000 number that would be necessary to match the estimated Bitfinex debt at $1 per token.

Source: http://omnichest.info/lookuptx.aspx?txid=2836e94921b8bd6b7f6415ac8f6a0cd5d07d03b46d1696d61f20cb789dac4800

Instead, I believe someone other than Bitfinex is attempting to set up a scam using these newly created tokens on the same system that Bitfinex itself plans to use to issue their own LEGIT tokens.

The highlighted text in the screenshot is also suspect:

"We guarantee the rate of $1 per BFX Omni token. Limited-time Founders discount."

Bitfinex could/would never say such a thing -- it's straight out of the Paycoin Scam playbook!

/u/zanetackett Can you please confirm whether or not this is a scam, and then issue a formal warning accordingly?

EDIT1: It's been confirmed by Zane -- This IS a scam! Do not buy or trade these fake "BFX Omni" tokens.

EDIT2: More SCAM tokens created on Counterparty's system seen here:

This is why I've advised multiple projects like Mastercoin to not use human readable names at the protocol level: it's too easy for name squatters to scam people.

Better to force people to always get asset definitions from rusted sources. Also, this is why namecoin and similar decentralised key-value mappings are fundementally dubious ideas.

Under what circumstances would these tokens be legitimate?

Even if bitfinex created them it would be illegitimate.

I'm not sure you can assume that Bitfinex has to create that many tokens anyway. It's likely that they reduced the amount of the loss by adding in their own funds, as has been reported.

Agreed. I said the same in another post somewhere around here.

Scammers are very fast and innovative, eh?

Disgusting. Try to scam people who already lost a lot. Hope these bastards burn in hell.

I'm sorry to do the noons, but what are these tokens? I'm in Bitcoin for 3 years and Ethereum since the beginning of the year but sometimes things just goes to fast for me to follow.

Ever heard of Colored Coins or Mastercoin? They're like that.

In fact, Omni is just the new name for Mastercoin.

They're all just various implementations of Colored Coins issued on the Bitcoin blockchain itself.

Colored Coins or Mastercoin

Now there's a few names I haven't heard in a long, long time.

LOL, finally the crapcoin MasterCoin has a use - for insolvent exchange scams.

Actually the Omni (former Mastercoin) protocol is used to store more than $ 70 million worth of value based on coinmarketcap.com, and USD tokens from Tether are used on Bitfinex and Poloniex for quite some time.

Yes whale pool confirmed this is a scam

No, whalepool didn't "confirm" it yet.

Edit: But, Zane himself just did in a comment down below.

It's not from us.

Right on, thank you for the confirmation!

I suggest you try to get the word out that it's a scam in a more formal announcement... and you should probably consider coming up with a new name for your tokens. ;)

We'll be updating the blog about possible scams.

Yeah... Has to be a scam.. Not just someone squatting and hoping for a payday. read sarcasm Funny how everything is a 'scam' by default.

What's the difference?

Difference would be one person is SQUATTING on an asset waiting for the rightful owner to pay them some money to obtain it at some point in the future... versus actively using the asset to mislead/extract funds from people.

One is taking a risk and hoping to get paid by rightful owner... the other is scamming people out of funds.

If registered MCDONALDS and squatted on that asset hoping that some day McDonalds would want to purchase the asset from me, would that make me a "scammer"? I think not.... happens all the time in domain name system.

Don't forget to change the name of the tokens once you actually create the tokens themselves!
