It's all speculation but this is the impression I've gathered from all the various reports about Basti:

  • He's seen as out of shape, unfit and injury prone.

  • He spent too much time in Germany last season and got favourable treatment.

  • He's not as technically gifted as he's hyped to be and seemed to phone it in, saving his body/fitness for the Euros.

  • All of which has made him very unpopular in the dressing room.

Keep in mind, in the Woodward era our team goes into full spin mode feeding stories to our core press pack whenever we want to win the PR battle so take all these reports with a massive grain of salt.

Yeah, I think a lot of this is Utd trying to win the PR war and get the fans on their side. Purely because I actually thought Schwinsteiger when he was fit last season - esp at the beginning - looked very classy on the ball and was able to control the midfield. Obviously, the fact he missed so much of the season suggests his body isn't able for a full season anymore but I don't buy that the technical ability angle.

I agree with most of what you're saying but I don't know about this. He was very good with Carrick but he struggled to set the tempo without him.

They were both just way too slow to play together against any big team.

If you go through /r/fcbayern's Schweinsteiger posts around last summer most of their comments when the transfer speculation started was about how he wasn't the most technical player but how they needed to keep him because he was a warrior, fighter, athlete etc. but well behind the likes of Thiago, Xabi, Lahm etc. technically.

At the start of the season, I did think he controlled the tempo, or at least, when he came on, he knew how to kill the game. His influence did dwindle but I thought he had always a flash of quality in his game. Obviously he isn't a Xabi or Thiago but he could spray the ball well.

I think his big problem is fitness and speed as he is clearly better with the ball than say Fellaini, Young (I know they don't play in the same position but you get my drift), and I completely understand why Jose has decided he needs to go as we are too slow as a team already with Carrick, Rooney and Fellaini etc.

He still does. I have no doubts if we played him, he'd still produce 4 or 5 moments of genius this season.

I see him a bit like Gerrard at the end. Obviously has technical ability but it's very difficult for an all action dynamic box-to-box midfielder to cope when he's lost his fitness.

We have no obligation or loyalty to him like Liverpool had to Gerrard so we can be a bit more ruthless and cut him off rather than take the 10 matches lost because of him and 5 matches won because of him.

I still don't think he's ever been much of a deep lying playmaker though. He's always been a dynamic runner to me, it's just a shame we got him after he lost his legs.

"players will leave this month"

he can't just throw that out there and hope to be respected. Even I could write that in a paper. Schweinsteiger part is interesting if true but I mean, he's not really had an extended amount of time match fit and in games he played, he did well and showed his experience.

The transfer window closes on Aug 31. So if players leave, it will be during this month.

He's not making that quote to be respected, he's just saying because he may know it to be true and instead of building his reputation he's giving out solely just information

Some people here think everyone wants to be considered an ITK. I'm 100% sure Mitten doesn't give shit whether people believe him or not. He never, ever, goes back and says "look, I was right", he just passes on what he hears without any grandiose statements or teasing.

Andy Mitten does have a lot of ties to the club, he's probably been told to expect players leaving this summer and passed that on. It's a bit unfair to have a go at him for it.

Man watching him run these days is so bad. I remember seeing him in the 06 World Cup thinking how athletic and mobile he was. Dude could sprint and move at high speeds so gracefully.

Compare that to his goal at the Euro's this summer where he looked like he would break something running the way he did. He is finished at the top level. Too many injuries, and I reckon he maybe didn't look after himself as best he should have.
