Fellaini's Role in the team (self.reddevils)

Even When Pogba comes in, there is a possibility that he might line up next to Fellaini. I know this goes against this sub's logic but Fellaini is a starter in this team. I was wondering why this is the case, whether Schweinsteiger cannot offer something similar, and whether a partnership of Fellaini-Pogba will work. Alternatively, what partnerships do we forsee with Pogba.

Hopefully Schneiderlin. No problem with Carrick though, if he wants a passer next to him

There's been absolutely nothing in preseason or last season to suggest Schneiderlin will be anywhere near a starting role.

All of Carrick, Fellaini and Ander are ahead of him in the manager's ranking and, in my own opinion, all play better than him.

I understand Carrick can't play a full season at his age but I'd really much rather play Blind as our holding midfielder when Carrick needs to rest.

This has been the case for Schneiderlin since he arrived. He has been bad more than good and he still needs to prove himself as a player for us I think

I think that's a bit harsh. He's primarily a combative, dynamic defensive player and he didn't fit in well with LvG's very slow possession system. He wasn't bad, just couldn't excel at what he does best. I agree he needs to prove himself though, hopeful for him under Mou. Could be our Matic.

I don't mind Fellaini playing as much as others but I don't expect him to be a regular

I don't think Felainis passing is good enough to play much. His main attribute is his physicality, and Pogba has that in abundance.

I think Pogba will roam a lot more though and the other player will be more defensive. Fellaini's physicality does make him the perfect fit for this sort of player but he doesn't have the discipline

Fellaini is a terrible defender outside of corners. The rest of our midfielders are better defensively.

Pogba is not as good as Fellaini in the air though and thats the reason Fellaini plays.

I would much rather play Pogba of course im just saying that Pogba is physical but in a different way, he is strong, tall and quick, Fellaini is slow and better in the air.

Saw or read or heard someone say that Fellaini started to win balls in the air to prevent Leicester's long ball counter attacks. He's a blunt instrument, but I can see him getting key roles in big games for us. Jose man marked him with Zouma two years ago, so clearly he values what he can do.

Mourinho's made vital squad members out of far more technically limited grunts in the past like Mikel.

It's really not that outlandish to suggest someone with such a wide range of unique skillsets like Fellaini is very likely to see a lot of match time to a manager who loves designing teams that are more than a sum of their parts.

He plays a role but honestly with the signings we've brought in, he's not as needed. He was our big physical presence but after seeing Zlatan make Wes Morgan look like a Japanese school girl and we've got someone who can win balls in the box.

I want to see Schneiderlin sitting with Pogba and Herrera in front. Won't happen cus it'd mean dropping our Lord and saviour Waynes Rooniesta , but a man may dream.

If Mou can teach Fellaini to play the CM destroyer role then his physicality with that could see him be quality there, however I very much doubt we're gonna see it, he just doesn't have the discipline for it

why do you say fellaini is a starter in this team? just because he started last game? bring on the downvotes but to me fellaini just can't cut it as a top footballer at a top club. the skill just isn't there. 'best with chest' is not enough to warrant you a place at a team like united. i really don't understand the people who constantly defend him. worst of all - he's so fucking dirty with that elbow of his. do you want united to have a reputation for allowing that kind of crap? he's a red card liability waiting to happen every game. pogba with either carrick/schniederlin will work perfectly fine (although i would have loved to see what bastian could have done too)

I agree with you but he's not competing for a starting spot at Barca. His competition for CM spots is not very good either. I think there's a very good chance he starts.

For me, he's been our 2nd best CM after Carrick over the last 18 months.

His role is a physical presence and aerial threat. He's a very limited passer and bad at defending. He'll probably be in the team sometimes, but with Bailly, Pogba, Smalling and Zlatan all being beastly in the air I don't see a massive need for him. Would much rather have Herrera, Schweinestieger or Carrick in the team as they can actually play a pass.

Having said that, Mourinho loves physicality and will probably play him way more than I expect.

I would want Carrick - Pogba with hopefully Schneiderlin eventually winning over Carrick's place. Herrera and Fellaini rotating in as well. Honestly I'm the happiest I've been with with our CMs in the longest while.
