Video: Analysis of Bailly's United debut

Although Zlatan Ibrahimovic won the game with a debut goal, Eric Bailly took home the Man of the Match champagne after Manchester United’s Community Shield victory over Leicester City.

Followers of @ManUtd on Twitter voted Bailly their star man at Wembley with a convincing 77 per cent of votes cast, ahead of the defender’s fellow nominees Jesse Lingard and Luke Shaw.

The Ivory Coast international made his official debut for the club following his transfer from Villarreal in June and he was excellent from start to finish, producing a powerful and imposing defensive performance that emphasised why Jose Mourinho believes in his vast potential.

Bailly started the match at centre-back and enjoyed a running battle with Jamie Vardy, executing a superb sliding tackle to deny the Foxes striker a shot at goal midway through the first half. The England star’s equaliser only came via a large slice of luck after Marouane Fellaini’s weak back-pass.

Former United midfielder Quinton Fortune watched the action with a close eye and provided his own expert analysis during MUTV’s Big Match Debrief programme on Monday evening, when the South African hero heaped praise on Bailly and offered some constructive criticism.

"He is a little bit raw and he does a few things at times that you question but he will get better and better," Fortune told MUTV's Dave Stowell. "I like it when he has got the ball, he doesn't just clear it and he tries to find a red jersey. That is very important."

Expanding on Bailly's aggressive style, Fortune said: "He is no-nonsense and you want that sometimes. When there is a tackle to be won, he will never pull out and he will go through anyone... Over time, with any young player, the more he plays the more the manager works with him the better he will become."
