  • Bailly stood out for me.
  • I'm happy with the current squad (Including Pogba)
  • I like the starting XI apart from Rooney.
  • Rooney & Zlatan shouldn't be playing at the same time, both drop too deep.

Bailly was stealing and blocking balls left and right. His technical ability is under rated.

I'm happy with the current squad

This might sound absolutely mad to say considering we've spent over 200m on CMs since SAF but we still desperately need a Carrick replacement.

All these transfers and he's still our best distributer and passer. He makes our entire team tick and sets the tempo. But he's obviously way past his best and - at times - his lack of athleticism can be an issue. We can't hold the ball or string together 5 passes without him but we get overrun against any strong pressing side with him.

If we play him (which we basically need to do) we really need to protect him like Juve protected Pirlo.

The only other player who can play his role is Blind who's time and again shown he's a considerable step down in quality from Carrick.

The only problem is Marchisio, Modric, Kroos & Veratti aside I can't think of many elite players that fit his profile at all and none of these players are within reach.

Unpopular but Felaini was good except error, Rooney as n 10. wont work. Team in general lacked fitness hope we get them ready for Sunday and defense great game.

Agreed about Fellaini. I thought he was one of our better players but that error was terrible (especially after excellent work in getting back to intercept the pass after an attempted Leicester counter)

Mouriho said it was pitch fault more that his, so i would not go hard on him but he played big part of error.

It's only dawning on me how many times I said "That's it Bailly!"/"What a fucking tackle!"/"Yess Bailly unreal" throughout the match.

Bailly was incredible but very rash, hopefully his decision making improves. Smalling and him would make a formidable partnership. Blind is incredible at reading the game

Martial looks a little off but he did start training late and I expect him to be back to his best a few games into the season

Rooney is always slow to start but I think he might actually be past it at this rate, I'd love to be proven wrong but we might be seeing him decline rapidly which is heartbreaking since he's undoubtedly one of the greatest to put on the shirt

After seeing how stagnant our midfield is Pogba can't come soon enough, we need someone willing to run from deep. Lingard did that for us in the last game and immediately we got results

Shaw is slowly getting back to his pre injury form and Valencia looks reborn

Can't wait for Bournemouth! I have a feeling Mkhi will start since teams love parking the bus against us and we need some creativity

Jose needs to do something about Rooney and Ibra both dropping back deep.. I mean Ibra was in defense a few times, no one was further forward.

Fellaini to Pogba is going to be such an upgrade, he was like a deer in head lights at times when it came to moving the ball forward or getting it in attacking positions.

He had a solid game though did well defensively he'll be useful throughout the season should get plenty of game time.

Fellaini

I think he was one of our better players. This is a general point about football fans rather than this subreddit but I really don't like when fans blow one mistake out of proportion and discount an otherwise good performance.

Valencia vs Arsenal in the FA Cup is another example. Even LvG said that 1 mistake aside, he was the team's best player that match but 1 error led to months of abuse of the poor bloke and people acting like he was a shit, clueless defender constantly making mistakes and out of position.

I think the intercept was actually pretty good, had he put a little more juice on the pass people would be praising how well he did to snuff out a very promising attack.

Mourinho's opinion: Fellaini did not make a mistake, it was the fault of the pitch.

"I think it's the mistake of the slow pitch."

"Before the game starts I put my hand on the surface and I thought, 'Wow, we are in trouble because we want a fast pitch and the pitch is really slow.'

"Good pitch but slow. I don't know if they put water on and the atmosphere killed the water immediately or if they forgot to do it but the reality is it was very slow.

"So Marouane gives a backpass and the ball slowed down and Vardy smells everything and is really fast."

Defensively we're becoming more solid with every match. Still not the first-choice defence I'd like (nor the first choice team really) but they worked hard and Bailly looked fantastic for the most part. Shaw also did so well to keep Mahrez largely ineffectual and Blind was there to cover Bailly when he did occasionally let something past. With Smalling coming back into the team at some point in the future, I'll be pretty happy with the defence.

Attacking is still a concern though. Rooney isn't up to match speed yet and his passing was sloppy and decision making slow. Martial still hasn't kicked off the rust either and Ibra dropped so deep at times he was keeping Carrick company.

I'd really like to see a front four of Martial, Mkhi, Lingard and Ibra to see how they work because I don't see Rooney as an automatic starter anymore, although he definitely still has his various uses for the team.

The attacking play itself was, at times, nice with one-touch passing and movement but all too often it was still the same slow and safe transition from defence to attack that defined LVG's reign. It'll take a while I imagine before we see the unnecessary safe passes completely removed from their game.

Really looking forward to the Bournemouth match now and I think the team looks solid if not spectacular yet.

I'm actually happy with the team. De Gea, Shaw, Smalling, Bailly, Valencia, Schneiderlin, Pogba, Rooney, Mkhityran, Martial, Ibra.

The only one I'd replace with a transfer is Schneiderlin. I think that he's not the right player for the role we're going to play him for. If we take players like Matic as the standard or Wanyama, they are better at the role with Wanyama actually moving this summer. However I would like to see him given a chance to develop, he's more technical than both the others and if he improves his defensive game I don't see why not
