A Question of Two Birthdays (Rant) (self.reddevils)

So today on Red Devils, two birthdays were discussed - Jimmy Murphy and Louis van Gaal. The latter somehow garnering twice as many upvotes and many times more comments than the former.

I'm prepared for an onslaught of downvotes, but is anyone else a bit irritated by this? The impact Murphy had on this club is absolutely profound - arguably only Busby and Ferguson are more important in our history. Van Gaal was mediocre at best.

Our history as a club is vitally important, and yet it feels like many would rather track Pogba's plane across the Atlantic than give time and appreciation to those who made us the club we are today.

Maybe I'm cranky because it's a Monday but there's something that really annoyed me about this. I appreciate this is Reddit, and not a matter of life and death, but this is a reflection of a fair amount of United supporters and I just get a bit staggered by such things.

Mate they're just two posts on the Internet on a subreddit, I can see your POV but does it really matter what other people think? Also the LvG bday post I made was around the time the Pogba pictures were released which correlates to a high activity on the Sub I presume, so I think that's more the case than what you're inferring.

People are being critical because your acting like a stuck up knob head?

Being of the attitude "I'm a better fan than some of you because 'I CARE' about our history" is just making you look like a cock it's like you want a pat on the back for watching a few documentaries and reading a few Wikipedia pages.

If you want to discuss stuff go ahead and the fans that relate to you will be happy to talk to you but your attitude and your method in which you attempt your discussion to be honest and not sugar coat it... Is shit.

You're coming off as a snob. Might I add, getting annoyed over how other people spend their time is a complete waste of your time. We all want to appreciate the club in own ways. Do not judge if you don't want to receive similar treatment.

Mate I have said it before and I will say it again. On days like this where there is so much going on you get every window licker under the sun on here and posting.

Unfortunately a lot of people don't care and don't want to know like that moron below.

Good on you for caring. Don't let it ruin your day. Pogba is back and people are excited that will rule the roost for posts today.

Edit just to clarify the moron in reference is the fella that was rude and obnoxious and had been down voted to oblivion.

See, the thing is, I'm not comparing this to the signing of Pogba, which is clearly a big deal. Just a clear comparison of two birthdays summing up a lot of people's interest in United's history. But there we go.

I understand mate. I haven't even turned on the tv today packing for a long trip but a lot of younger ones won't know who Jimmy Murphy is but everyone knows who LvG is!

That eijet below could do with reading about Newton Heath but his ignorance is his own downfall.

Well I mean the amount of people who are aware of events in the few months will be far higher than those aware of the club's history from 40-50 odd years ago, tbat's just inevitable. I'd say given the timings of the posts and the nature of reddit the Murphy post actually got a pretty respectful amount of likes.

Of course Jimmy Murphy had a bigger influence on the club, and I agree that he 'deserves' more upvotes and comments accordingly. But realistically, more people here remember (and thus have things to talk about) Van Gaal, who was our manager until very recently, than Murphy, who most users here weren't even born during his life time, let alone remember his contributions to United directly.

And while history is absolutely a crucial part of Manchester United, it's not as if the post about Jimmy Murphy was ignored completely, there was still discussion there as well.

Regarding Pogba, I agree that discussing and showing respect for such an influential figure in our history should get priority over updates on Pogba's whereabouts and the like, but realistically it is to be expected that the average person here is going to be more excited about the near future of the club (and updates regarding it) that they will experience personally than history from half a century ago that they didn't experience themselves. But this is due to the nature of the internet and Reddit; if you were to go to a United discussion between older United supporters, I'm sure they'd be more interested in discussing and sharing anecdotes about Murphy than tracking Pogba's every move or even talking about Van Gaal.

Good points. I know it is easier to be absorbed in the here and now. We all do it to an extent.
