“Strike while the iron is hot.”という表現は、
「鉄は熱いうちに打て」という日本のことわざと同じ意味だと言われていますが、
厳密に言うと、ちょっと意味合いが異なるようです。
というのは、「鉄は熱いうちに打て」という日本のことわざには、
2つの意味合いがありますよね。
「鉄は熱して軟らかいうちに鍛えよ」ということから、
「人も純粋な気持ちを失わない若いうちに鍛錬すべきである」という意味と、
「物事を行うには、それに適切な時機を失してはならない」
という意味があります。
でも、英語の“Strike while the iron is hot.”という表現には、
1つ目の「若いうちに人を鍛えろ」という意味合いはほとんどなくて、
2つ目の「好機を逃がすな」「チャンスを逃がすな」という意味合いでのみ
用いられているようですね。
これと似たような表現で、“Make hay while the sun shines.”
という表現もあります。
