No Kronwall??? I'm disappointed

Is this a clean hit? Is the commentator asking for the whistle solely for player safety, or is he asking for a penalty to be given as well?

Totally legal play but when someone is "seriously" hurt the refs are supposed to blow the play dead so no further damage is dealt. It's all on the ref to determine the severity of the injury which can be very difficult given the speed of an NHL game.

And in this case since it was clear Voracek was unconscious briefly it would make sense to blow it dead here

it's a very clean hit. The player had possession of the puck which makes him fair game. Unfortunately this poor sucker had his head down which is a big no no in hockey. you always need to be looking ahead of you to see what's coming. at the professional level you should never even have to look at the puck. if he had kept his head up kronwall would never be able to lay such a heavy hit. the announcer is upset that the referees didn't stop the play when a player was clearly hurt. The only time a hit is illegal is hitting a player in the back. side and front is clean but never from behind. if you want to see how seriously hockey players take that rule you can check out the detroit red wings vs. colorado avalanche brawl that took place in '97 and then again in 98'. one of the avalanche's star players hit one of the detroit redwings from behind causing his face to smash into the boards and breaking his jaw. when the teams met the next year the redwings were out for blood very literally. this is what happened. '97 - https://youtu.be/6P4wg21mLf8 '98 - https://youtu.be/4BVBmZMFYns

that Patrick Roy in 98'

He comes flying in at 1:59 seconds in the 97' video. Such a badass

He lost both of the fights....

I will never not watch the brawl of '97 when it's posted. Always a great couple of minutes, crowd loved it.

I feel sorry for kids these days that weren't old enough to experience hockey in the 90's.

Vladdy was a real beast. Such a huge part of that Wings identity during the cup runs of the 90's.

that was so clean.

I don't think it's clean by today's standards because the initial point of contact is the head.

Ehh, you're probably right but Kron showed no visual intention of aiming for the head (skates didn't leave the ice before the hit, no elbows, no aiming high with the shoulder, clean shoulder-chest angle). It was on Voracek who put his head down.

Kind of dumb luck. Whistle should have been blown for safety but not a penalty. Dude was out cold. I've seen MMA fights stopped for less.

you're wrong. see Skwahzee's comment below above . It's not nice hockey... but it is sure as hell clean and legal. No malicious intent to the head. Shanahan would agree.

Thanks! I figured that to be the case. What a fucking hit though. Geez

it always looks worse when the head is down. but it happens to the best of us

Clean hit, Voracek should not have his head down in that position. Kronwall is turning away from contact and is not leading with any part of his body. Voracek literally plants his face into Kronwalls body and knocks himself out.

Refs generally call the whistle if someone is obviously down for the count, that is most likely what the commentator is talking about.

Someone on Blackhawks got Kronwalled(years ago) . Can't remember who it was.. That one is one of my favorites.. You could hear the bench telling him to keep his eyes up and Kronwall was locked on target.. I remember watching it live.. I cant wait for training camp!

Voracek, Havlat, Hemsky

The Voracek hit shows he was definitely concussed by his fencing response after the hit, but Havlat just get's KTFO'd and I almost feel bad for Hemsky, jeez.

All great legal hits.

I agree. I'm a Flyers fan so the Voracek hit hurts to watch, but I've never had a problem with how Kronwall plays the game.

YOU JUST GOT FUCKING KRONWALLED.

That announcer is a disgusting piece of trash.

Totally. He was straight up boarded and the announcer is praising it as a big hit...

What a piece of shit.

Kronwall blasts the hell out of guys regularly because hes some freakish cement-block-human hybrid but its never anything dirty or with intent to injure.

Saying he got a taste of his own medicine (from a nasty dirty hit) is a gigantic insult to how much of an effort he puts into hitting cleanly.

Came here to say this.. LGRW!!!!!!!

I've enjoyed how 80% of the clips posted involve the Wings lol.

Came to say this, that man makes tackling beautiful.

Has anybody made a career out of hockey just by being a tough guy and average at the sport? I don't get see see any hockey where i'm from.

Absolutely. They are called enforcers or goons in a negative. Some teams have enough to make a line (three guys) they are called checking lines. Granted the role of goons in Hockey has declined over the years but they definitely are still there. Good for fights too. Haha

If someone takes a shot at your star. Instead of your star retaliating and possibly getting injured or penalized, they send out a goon to make sure that doesn't happen again. Big mn wild fan here, you should look up Derek boogaard. Dude was a beast and saw him fight someone from St Louis after they took a shot at Marion gaborik, I was three rows up from the glass, it was glorious

Edit: sorry replied to the wrong guy

Second edit: check out this video you moron 😄 https://youtu.be/lmsfxIWImow

The refs just watch them fight?

For a while yes. If a player falls down its ended, sometimes prior to that.

I could get into hockey. It looks very exciting!

Watch the playoffs. If that doesn't do it for ya, then nothing will.

Game 7 of the Blues/Blackhawks series from this year was fucking ridiculous. Great game to get a feel for playoff hockey.

Also, great username.

This shit is lit! No doubt though, that game was fucking awesome. Especially as a Blues fan.

The goalie just said "Fuck it" and left?

If you already understand things like possession and offsides then hockey is one of the easiest sports to get into. It's rarely boring, sometimes it can be very low scoring but that's usually because the defence men and goalie were killing it which is impressive and entertaining in its own right. I highly recommend going to a hockey game, NHL games are the most "fun" but if you go to a minor league game you'll see some fucking amazing hockey being played

[–]A_Song_For_The_Deaf 14ポイント15ポイント  (1子コメント)

I love how the announcers instantly turn into fight commentators the very second fists start flying.

Yep. The refs can stop it whenever they want but they usually just let it go until it hits the ice or the fighters get tied up and it starts getting slow.

It's a 5 minute penalty for both of them but it doesnt penalize either team.

Fighting doubles as both a way to keep players in check (you do something dirty to a star player and they will send their fighter after you) and a way to keep crowds excited. Works pretty well I think.

Yeah. Sometimes you can hear the refs on the mic after the fight and they tell them both "good job guys" or something along those lines.

It is an accepted practice in hockey. There is a lot of pushing and shoving after a whistle, especially around the goalie. Think of the goalie as your best friend. If you see someone messing with him, you immediately go up and get in his face so your goalie doesn't have too. The refs will generally let them fight until they fall and hit the ice at which point they will jump in a break it up. If your team is losing it is a great way to get your team fired up, if you take out their biggest guy. Well worth it to let your goon sit in the penalty box for 5 mins.

Sometimes the goalie thinks he's the enforcer tho... atleast if his name is Ron Hextall. Goalie fights are rare but awesome to watch.

Don't forget Roy. Those fights were legendary.

Greatest fights in all of hockey are goalie fights. They're probably exhausted by the time they reach center ice with all that gear on though. Lol

This response by someone who isn't familiar with hockey never fails to make me smile:)

They tend to step in a lot more quickly now days, but yea, they'll let them go for the most part.

Fights are a form of self-enforcement. In soccer or what have you, a player on one team might get away with playing dirty, since the refs can't see everything. In hockey, playing dirty makes you a target for getting checked, or getting in fights. Sometimes games get so physical, or rivalries are so heated, that allowing individual fights let's them blow off enough steam that you can keep full team brawls from erupting.

it's accepted as a way for teams to blow off steam and settle scores. there are guys who can lay some heavy hits in hockey and people get really hurt. better to have a few guys throw some punches than someone trying to lay huge hits all the time. look at that kronwall hit posted a ways up the page. that guy has a serious concussion. much better to throw some punches and get that out of everyone's system. it is dying out these days though. american hockey was a very physical game in the 90's but todays hockey is much more tame.

Yeah...none of the other comments mentioned the main reason refs let it go, though. Those are 2 very athletic dudes wailing on each other-- jumping into the middle of it when their fists are going full steam is a great way to catch a stray fist or elbow and get hurt. If they can't stop it before the shoves become punches, they let it go and step in when it is safe, i.e. when the players hit the ice or get tired.

The Boogie Man was a family favorite. The boogaard chant is still one the of the best hockey memories I have

Could not agree more, I was with my then gf and we saw someone fly up on Gabby after a whistle and nudge him. Immediately the coach sent Boogeyman out and the face off was literally right in front of us and boogaard was against the glass smacking the guys skates before the pick dropped. I was so amped up I kept telling my gf to watch 24 because he's gonna fuck somebody up. The fight was about a minute and a half before Boogeyman put him down. One of my favorite sports moments

As a Bruins fan our enforcer was always Shawn Thornton. Dude was a fucking stud. Miss those old days of hockey

Luke Gazdic is probably one of the better fighters "left" in the league (splits time between NHL and AHL)

Jesus. I don't know what's more impressive, his fighting or the fact that some of those fights were like days.

Is this who the movie goon was based off of?

I don't know if there was a hockey player that Doug glatt was based off of. That's a good question. But I think maybe just more the role of an enforcer itself. I could be wrong tho

[–]you_are_all_slaves 27ポイント28ポイント  (6子コメント)

Some teams have enough to make a line

Or a whole team. They're called the Boston Bruins.

[–]crouching_manatee 7ポイント8ポイント  (2子コメント)

Not so much any more. The Bruins have been relatively soft the past few years. It's frustrating to watch as a fan

[–]Duane_Earl_for_Prez 10ポイント11ポイント  (0子コメント)

'95 NJ Devils. The CRASH Line. Still have a plaque on my wall of them. Peluso, Holik, McKay.

That's not what a checking line is.

A checking line is a line of guys that take away time and space from the other team and are typically positive possession players. The checking line is more often than not one of the more skilled "defensive" offensive lines on the team and pair against the opposing team's top scoring line. They typically "grind" but usually don't look for the big hits because big hits like in the video would take them away from the play and usually result in the puck being elsewhere.

"Pure" enforcers are becoming a thing of the past and there's virtually no team in the last 5 or more year that would have 1 every day enforcer on a team, let alone 3. If you can't actually play, most teams don't have a use for you anymore. Not to say it didn't use to be a part of the game, just not really anymore. There's guys that will fight and protect other guys, but they're not really guys that don't contribute elsewhere. The primary reason the role doesn't really exist these days is a change in rules, where hits to the head, charging, boarding, and so on are much more heavily enforced since the concussion conversation has taken over in the media.

I'll also say that basically every hit in the video, save maybe one or two, were illegal.

[–]Houoh 3

A checking line is the third line. You're thinking of the "energy line." A checking line is for your more defensive-minded player or forechecker and often has grinders or 2-way forwards (or if your team is good, it's a scoring depth line). These are players who actually exist to play hockey and not to facesmash.

a checking line isnt neccesarily a line of goons

That's awesome. Shame it's not as popular in the UK.

There is a decent ice hockey league in the UK, the 'Elite League'. Nothing spectacular but some teams (like the Belfast Giants, my local team) get fairly decent crowds all things considered. It is a cool sport like, I started to get into it a bit more this year.

I honestly never knew there was a pro hockey league in the UK. Shame they're all Northern teams. I live on the south coast I'll have to look into it and see if there is anything close by.

That's awesome. A buddy of mine played against Belfast. He played for the Hull Stingrays for a couple years.

They are barely there now, could probably count on one hand how many are left in the league.

Everyone in today's NHL has more skill than those guys did then because they need to be able to skate. Obviously every tam has big guys on them, but hardly now are they wasting a roster spot on an enforcer.

The last true enforcer was probably John Scott.

I highly recommend watching Last Gladiators. Documentary on the enforcer/goons after they finished playing. A lot of the documentary revolves around the struggles of these guys later in life, many of whom suffered from addiction, depression, etc.

edit: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2044040/

That was such a good documentary.

Thank you, I'll seek it out tomorrow after work.

I just reread the reviews since it's been a while and feel I should correct what I wrote above. The documentary mostly revolves around one enforcer in particular. Chris "knuckles" nilan. It may not revolve around the struggles of enforcers as a whole as I seem to remember. I'll have to give it another watch tonight.

Nilan is frequently on TSN 690 (montreal sports radio) and often talks about his personal demons and the struggles of a lot of other enforcers. I may have over emphasized the Documentaries focus just because during Hockey season I listen to the guy for 3 hours every day.

Still highly recommend the documentary as I remember it being really well done. (says the totally biased Habs fan who is a big fan of the star of the doc)

Probert, while an enforcer, could still play and would have been a legit winger even if he didn't fight. To me, guys like Tony Twist, Derek Boogard, and Domi are the true sense of boxers on skates.

Love a good goon fight though!

Domi even today would be a 3rd/4th line guy with the amount of points he put up.

He wasn't as one dimensional as a guy like John Scott, Andrew Peters, Boogaard, and others.

For a movie about this starring Sean William Scott, check out Goon. It's a stupid but great movie.

Thanks i will! I'm sure I've seen this title around on Netflix. The closest i have come so far is the start of Happy Gilmore.

That is a great movie. I love how even tho he is an absolute badass he never loses his nice guy persona. But the ending fight man, makes me cringe Everytime. But the final line of the movie is sooooo epic I am literally getting goosebumps just thinking about. I know what I'm watching tonight... Lol

NHL 2016 All Star MVP John Scott made his entire career out of that.

This is exactly the answer I was hoping to find

There has been plenty in the past but they're coming fewer and farther in between. The idea being that if you want to cheap shot the other teams star and take your 2 minute penalty that you're also going to have this monster come out the next time you're on the ice and use your head as a speedbag.

Even the enforcers for the NHL teams are unreal hockey players. Alot of guys who make it to canadas world Junior team don't make it to the NHL

Best modern example would be Zac Rinaldo, he was fairly useless, but god damn he could hit.

Watch the movie GOON. Funny hockey movie with Sean William Scott about being a bad hockey player but good at fighting.

Blues had Tony Twist as an enforcer throughout the 90s, the guy couldn't skate for shit but he could beat some ass.

10 goals in 10 seasons if I'm not mistaken

Have you never heard of NHL All-Star Captain/MVP John Scott?

Actually yes. Almost every team has at least one player they send out just to hit someone hard to get the momentum in their favor.

Goons don't really exist anymore. I think John Scott was the last real goon in the league. Teams do have tougher lines but they have a decent amount of skill too. Some of the really big guys nowadays are good enough to be on the second or even sometimes first lines.

This montage could literally just be Ron Hextall highlights. Guy was a fucking monster.

Holy fuck that guy's a goddam animal! Dudes were literally running away from him. That guy's fucking committed to the game.

I think Hextall legitimately had mental issues. Or at least severe anger management issues. He the kind of person that if you have to fight them then you're going to have to beat them unconscious because they won't stop otherwise.

Hextall has been an absolute grade A gm for us. He was just crazy on the ice

True. He's mellowed in his old age.

And now he's actually a semi-decent GM who seems to know what he's doing.

Which is painful for me to say as a Caps fan.

He seems like a guy if he were to get tazered for whatever reason it would just piss him off.

Greatest goon goalie of all time. Ask Chelios.

And they're on fucking ice, shits hard

And they're surrounded by hard plastic boards and glass.

Every other sport just has out of bounds, but in hockey, the fastest sport on feet, nope. We want hard walls at 90 degree angles to the ice

Don't forget all the dental innovations that hockey has inspired.

Nice. Here is a pretty good mix of hits I recently came across: https://youtu.be/-5xkMNIt-5k

Some of the most memorable hits for me are the Dale Hunter hit on Pierre Turgeon in the 93 playoffs, Scott Stevens hitting just about everyone (especially Paul Kariya, and Eric Lindros), Chara breaking a neck, etc. So many... It is nice the game is trending toward finesse as opposed to brute force but there will always be good cause to play the body and on the other side cause to keep your head up!

I was going to mention Scott Stevens... I mean he ended multiple people's careers with (at the time - not sure anymore) legal open ice hits. I grew up a big Devils fan and loved watching that team, especially his big hits

Definitely not legal any more. His elbow on Lindros would have been a definite suspension.

It's important to note (and I am a Devils fan, so homer glasses) that a large majority of Stevens' hits would still be legal today. The main reason why hits from his era are no longer legal are:

  • Contact being made to the target's head. This is where some of his most highlight-worthy hits would have gotten him suspended in today's game, especially since he knocked guys loopy on these type of hits.
  • Elbowing is called more strictly nowadays. For the most part, Stevens wouldn't have had much of an issue here. The Lindros hit was one of the few big hits where he let his elbow loose. He usually had textbook bodychecking form, leading with the shoulder, elbow tucked to his side until contact is made. It's also worth noting that in his career, he had a ridiculously low FOUR elbowing penalties. Even with more lenient rules, if he was elbowing people regularly he would've racked up far more than that.

The majority of his hits, the hundreds that didn't make the Top Ten lists, were textbook even by today's standards. The majority of his hits didn't send a guy stumbling back to their bench either. But every once in a while, you get a "perfect storm" situation - high speed puck carrier, head down (not looking at the oncoming freight train), distracted by the strong side defenseman or winger... Even your average high school defenseman could lay a decent hit in that situation, but when you have one of the most physically dominant and intelligent defensemen in league history doing the hitting, you're going to end up with some scary looking highlights.

If you watch the hit on Lindros his elbow comes up after contact is made by his shoulder- it just looks weird because he was coming at him from an angle. That being said I'm glad these those types of hits are illegal now.

Lindros also had a bad tendency to skate with his head down.

Ah. Scott Stevens. In addition to being a fantastic defenceman he was just a human wrecking ball. He was a walking illustration of why the teach kids pretty early on to keep your goddamn head up, especially when you're cutting to the centre.

edit: For anyone who wants to see him in action

That third clip was from my high school sectional final game. My teammate got a concussion but there was no call. In the other guy's defense, he never really made head contact.

I miss NHL Hitz on Gamecube

Are all of these tackles 100% legal? Or did any of them get penalized?

There are a few things that make checking illegal. You can't be skating into a guy when you make contact, you have to be coasting or they call it charging. You also can't leave your feet to hit a guy. No head shots, hitting the numbers in the back, elbows, or going knee on knee. You also can't check him with your stick begins held horizontally in your hands.

A good, clean check is considered using your shoulder to hit them in either their chest or shoulder. You can also go hip to hip. And they also have to have the puck or have it close enough to them with them attempting to play it.

Some look illegal by today's rules. Can't make contact with the head or leave your feet to deliver a check.

Can the game even continue when one those panels is shattered like that?

They replace them

Some places are better than others at that. Montreal, for example, usually gets the glass cleaned up and replaced in a matter of minutes.

What the hell is that lady talking about buses for?

"Get the wheels on the bus"

Maybe she means get going, hustle, or somthing. Implying the team is currently a bus without wheels.

I always thought she just butchered the saying "start the busses" for when one team is crushing the other

Could be. I don't really speak obnoxious hockey mom fluently.

Haha I think they stop until the panel is replaced

While I miss many of these now illegal hits (some), I do not miss the careers that may be shortened and dangers to players' lives.

Long live old school hockey.

After watching 5 minutes of Olympic Soccer, this was much more entertaining

I grew up playing soccer, never played hockey. But hockey is by far the best viewer sport IMO, soccer is pretty lame. Seriously, hockey fans are fucking nuts. Hockey parents? Absolute nuts. Hockey players? Absolute fucking nuts. The game is great, lots of passion, energy, and emotion.

I like to imagine that Canadians are so nice because they vent all their aggression through Hockey

This is the hardest one I've ever seen. Sorry if repost and for shit quality.

His defenseman sent him a suicide pass. The poor guy never had a chance.

Hockey is almost back!!! LETS GO PREDS!!!!!

As the rest of the central quietly weeps at how much they'll be seeing Subban this year.

Bring it on, I love the thunderdome

We also don't have to deal with Weber either. I'm looking at it as a somewhat lateral move that will likely just extend the Preds years of having an absolutely beastly defensive core.

Last one: Too fast to see, but is that Darcy Tucker?

Yup, Darcy Tucker on Sami Kapanen during the early 2000 playoffs (2003 or 2004) I think, was in OT and game 6 if I recall correctly. It is one of my favourite hits from a Leafs player, too bad minutes later Roenick scored on Belfour to eliminate the Leafs :(

God I miss Don Cherry's Rock'Em Sock'Em Hockey... Hours of hard hits, colorful commentary, and awesome fights.

As someone who has played hockey since I was a toddler, it really surprises me that hockey isn't as popular as some other sports. Like it's fast, exciting, there's fights, and of course crazy hits like these! Hockey games are the most fun imo but maybe it's just cause I'm from Boston and hockey is really popular in the northeast

If that first hit isn't the definition of boarding then I don't know what is.

woo hoo my bruins were the only one featured completely shattering the glass.

Brian Campbell destroys RJ Umberger, 2006.

Absolutely clean hit, about as perfect a hit as you'll see. As a Sabres fan, still sucks it took Umberger out for the rest of the season.

The third clip was from my high school. I believe it was a playoff game. Wish I saw it live

where's the Hit on LaFontaine? or Campbell hit on Umberger

Need Big Birds penalty box destroying hip check. That poor Canadian that got wall paper'd by that American last night too

Hockey best sport on earth!
