From my point of view it would allow Pogba more freedom going forward as Rooney has displayed he is more than capable of dropping into a deeper midfield position if Pogba bursts forward.

Possible Line-up:

                   De-Gea

    Valencia - Bailly - Smalling - Shaw

Mkhitaryan - Schneiderlin - Pogba - Martial 
                    Rooney

There is no difference whatsoever between Rooney playing as a lone AM and Rooney playing as a support striker.

Rooney will always drop into midfield when he gets bored and drift around the pitch as the fancy takes him. It's how he's always been and always will be.

But playing him as an AM will limit him from running into the same space as Ibrahimović which seems to be an issue with the current attack.

with this level of plays,Rooney should be a bench warmer,not starter,not so much different between Roo-CM and Roo-SS.

After few bad games,I can see Mou replaces R10 by another players,not kidding. Mou is the type of manager who doesnt give a fuck about who you were 5 years ago

Rooney will still be a decent contributor. Every year people clamor about the same shit (i.e. benchwarmer) and yet Rooney does fine. Clearly he's slowed down and doesn't justify his wages but he can still contribute on the pitch. I think he'll play a sizeable role throughout the season, as he's shown time and time again. It just won't be as big as years past.

Slowed down is one thing, it's his ball control that's the problem and he takes ages to find even a very simple pass. He can still contribute that's sure but there are players in our team that can do a better job than he could.

If we play 4231 Mata is the better choice to play No.10, Lingard is a form player and can be used as a impact player but he is hardly starting material so I want to see Mkhitaryan taking the RM spot and if we go for a 433 Herrera would take up Rooney's spot and do a better job.

I'm probably gonna get down voted for this, Rooney has been on a steady decline for 3 years now and so has his expectation bar. As long as he shows a rare glimpse of his past, his inconsistency is being overlooked.
