Played Superman 64. Thank god we only rented it. Drops you straight into super hard flying through rings shit. Never got past first level.

I still feel bad for getting my dad spend his hard earned money buying that game for me and my brothers.

Came here to say this. Rented it for a week, played about 20 minutes with my brothers the first night, couldn't get through all the hoops, took it back. I still don't know if we were just too young and bad, or if the game really is completely broken, but i never want to see it again.

You weren't too young, I think I was in my early teens when this came out and it was bullshit. Thankfully I didn't buy it or even rent it, someone loaned it to me or allowed me to play for a few minutes on their system. Picked it up, playability was zero, put it down.

always amazes me how many developers looked at the atari 2600, barely capable of handling more than one object on-screen moving at once, and thought "yep. this looks like a good platform for a full-fledged adventure game with a start and finish"

Good god, wtf?

Still looks better than Superman 64

I have and played this game a lot as a kid.

For Atari this was an extremely well developed game. You have the intro where you become Clark Kent, manually witness the bridge exploding and the bad guys escaping, go back to the phone booth and become Superman. At this point the "open world" aspect comes in.
As Superman your objective is to catch the 6 bad guys (5 gun guys and one copter guy (Lex?)) and drop them in the jail, as well as find the 3 bridge pieces and bring them to the bridge screen. To end the game you must do all the above, become Clark Kent at the phone booth, and find your way to the daily planet (door with a ? circle (really a globe)). You can fly off-screen in any direction to the neighboring screen in the map space. The LI doors are subway access and serves as warps to various locations. The Daily Planet is also a one way hub room for the subway. Score is based on how quickly you complete the game. My best time was 60 seconds.
You must also avoid the kryptonite (the flying stars) which will ground you and make map movement more difficult (left, right, and down only) until you kiss Lois Lane (the green character).
In easy difficulty the bad guys stay together in groups and Lois Lane appears instantly when hit by kryptonite. In hard mode Lois must be found as she wanders and the bad guys and parts are much more scattered and faster moving. The helicopter is just annoying.

Really fun game.

That has a worse problem than being hard: it's boring. I emulated it a while back and played about half an hour. It's the same thing over and over.

Well, I played through Sonic 06 with a friend once. It was such a broken game. Hilarious fun, though.

if there's one thing sonic 06 is right about, it's that there really is no use.

Before the silver fight happened, we watched a speedrun of Sonic 06 on YouTube. Apparently, Silver is really easy to cheese.

The entire game is. It's one of those games that, if you play it a very precise way, precisely as the developers intended, with no deviations, it is actually playable and can be beaten without issue. This is what you see when you see speedrunners play the game and it looks like it works, people who learnt precisely the requirements the devs expected.

However, the average person playing doesn't know this precise nature, starts experimenting, and soon finds a lot of areas that don't work as intended, where the game is broken and where the player can die through no fault of their own. The game requires a certain level of preciseness to counter it's many failures and bugs, one most players can never invest in learning.

It's almost too precise in some areas.

On all of the loops, you aren't locked into the center of the loop like you are in Sonic Heroes. This means that you can ramp off of the loops and get to areas you aren't meant to be in completely by accident.

walking dead: survival instinct

One of the most disappointing experiences of my life. I spent $60 on that game on launch day too... they made it out to be so cool and it just... sucked.

Worked at GameStop and had a guy want to buy this for him and his teenaged son. Guy was already kind of a dingus but I thought I'd be polite and recommend TellTale's Walking Dead for a good story and the excellent reception it received all around. Guy gets snippy, buys his $60 piece of shit, and leaves. Apparently he came back soon after ranting about how awful the game was and why "nobody warned him". Okay, well I tried.

Big Rigs: Over the Road Racing

  • the game originally shipped with no AI and sound

  • the game has no collision detection

  • you can drive up 90 degree slopes

  • you can accelerate to faster than light speeds

  • the game confuses between starting and finishing a race

  • loading one of the maps crashes the game

  • On winning, you recieved the message "YOU'RE WINNER"

If I remember correctly you could only go faster than the speed of light in reverse, going forward there was a speed limit. Because that's far more reasonable.

They probably coded in a speed limit, and made it so you couldn't go above the speed limit. But neglected to make it so you couldn't go below (0 - the speed limit).

if(playerspeed > speedlimit)

Winnie the Pooh Homerun Derby. Sounds like a fun kids game, right? WRONG! This game, though on the surface appearing to be for children, will take your dignity, then turn it invisible for a bear to hit with a bat. Possibly the hardest game I have ever played, and very little faith to Pooh lore

Edit: Link in case you too want to ruin an evening or so http://lol.disney.com/games/winnie-the-pooh-home-run-derby

For those interested: http://games.kids.yahoo.co.jp/sports/013.html

Major differences:

  • The bees on the title screen actually fly around in the Japanese one
  • One of the bees is red in the American one
  • More flowers in the field on the title screen in the Japanese one

It's obvious that the Japanese one is objectively better.

Anubis the second for the wii. You can literally find it being sold for 2 cents online because it's that horrible.

Isn't that the one that they reskinned to be like, 4 different games? There are multiple titles with exactly the same level geometry and objectives, Anubis being one I know of, and Ninjabread Man being another.

Anubis II, Ninjabread Man, Myth Makers: Trixie In Toyland and Rock 'n' Roll Advnetures. Yeah, the game title is misspelled on the box. Only on the spine, but fuck it.

Myth Makers: Trixie In Toyland

The game was universally panned by reviewers. IGN gave it a 1.4/10[2] stating sarcastically that it's "really just a fantastic title like Ninjabread Man and Anubis II; everyone should experience Trixie in Toyland just as everyone should experience throat cancer."

JFC

A game as fun as throat cancer?

Kinda makes you wonder what you would have to do to get a 0 from IGN.

Advnetures

That's almost as bad as Capcpom misspelling Resident Evil:Revelaitons.

Ninjabread man is such a great title wasted on such a bad game.

Aliens: Colonial Marines.

Anything redeeming about it was overshadowed by all of the lost potential and clunky game making throughout. It was also a great example of a common & lame reality in gaming: producers can advertise a game to be made by a critically-acclaimed developer, but when really, really it was outsourced to an entire other team.

The review for a PSX Aliens FPS game called it's dual analog controls, now standard, horrific. They said to wait for Colonial Marines which would be coming out very soon.

I constantly use this game as an example when I am teaching Computer science. The students have to do an independent project at the end of the year. Most of them choose to do some sort of game. "Do not worry about how your game looks," I tell them. "You can always polish its appearance later. First and foremost, your game should be fun to play. "

I remember that sometime before the game's release PC Gamer ran an article. With the issue they included a large poster of a model cosplaying pin-up style. It was a source of uh... Inspiration for young me.

I tried searching for it, but I can not find it anywhere.

Well, that, and it's also one of the oldest and most common PS3 titles. Every EBGames/Gamestops in the world has a bazillion copies of it, especially since it was shipped with or given away with new PS3s for a year or so.

Source: Former EBGames employee that worked at a store that had, I shit you not, 50 used copies of Infamous.

Captain Novolin. A game on the SNES about diabetes. Killer donuts and soft drinks, absolutely horrible. Edit: spelling

When I was in a children's hospital for an appendectomy, they had these carts with a TV and a Super Nintendo that they could wheel into rooms and let the patients play with. Unfortunately, they didn't have any games that any sensitive parent could consider 'violent'.

Like Mario, for instance.

So I found myself growing bored with a video game for the first time in my short life as I played Captain Diabetes. I don't think it was actually called that, but it wasn't far off. You played a muscular, powerful-looking superhero whose mission was to walk to the right and avoid touching anthropomorphic sugary snacks. Donuts with googly eyes, etc.

You could not fight them. You could only avoid them. Touching them sent you back to the beginning of the level.

I realize I was in a children's hospital and it might have been a valuable teaching game to someone, but not me. It just filled me with despair.

Edit: Holy crap I found it, I was remembering certain details wrong but here it is. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t9LIljhIiPo

Such a poorly thought out idea. Kids generally don't do groceries so if there's candy in the house, that's the parents doing that. You can't blame a kid for eating the candy or sweets they're offered. Kids don't know anything about diet or diabetis itself. Such a weird topic for a game. Way off on the target audience.

I used to have a game called Packy and Marlin that was about two diabetic elephants running around. It was designed to teach kids about diabetes but we would play it all the time.

Check out Parkitect (like RCT 1&2) and Planet Coaster (like RCT 3). Both are currently early access but look very promising.

Here is a video comparing all 3.

That franchise and sim city will never have a new version that die-hard fans will like because they will never be able to add the variety and customization needed to impress the hard core fans without making the game to complicated for new fans to pick up.

Thank goodness for Cities: Skyline right?

And Planet Coaster and Parkitect.

Planet Coaster blows RCT World out of the water in terms of customisation, ease of use, graphics, performance, park management, physics, etc. and it's not even half way done yet.

Parkitect is a smaller game, and appeals more to RCT 1 and 2 fans with its simpler graphics style and grid based building, and still has a ton of customisation despite being from a much smaller team than RCT:W. It also has better performance, it looks better, it has very few bugs and it even has Workshop support and modding API!

If both of those unfinished games have nearly accomplished what RCT:W couldn't, even after releasing, (Never mind, I thought it was released. It's actually early access as well) you can't say they couldn't possibly have done better and that they can't make everyone happy. Not when we have two games which are both very close to giving RCT fans what they wanted all along.

Planet Coaster isn't even out yet and I know it's gonna be the best RCT-esque game since 3.

I can't speak for Sim City, however Atari absolutely destroyed RCTW from the get go. Its been a shit storm since day one. Cut to December 2015 when they announce its going into Early Access on Steam having said a few weeks previous that it was 90% complete. Add to that a broken game, soulless art design and not having basics like being able to build walls and...yeah. Awful. Thank fuck for Planet Coaster.

"The best part about this is there were people whose entire work life consisted of this game. People who went to college and worked their butts off, took out student loans and worked at the school book store to become programmers and graphic artists. And they almost didn't finish school but their Grandfather pulled them aside and said... "son, if you can just get through this the world is yours." So they kept going. Getting their grades up until finally they graduated. But after graduation they found out that Grandpa was sick. So, still in their graduation robes, they went to his bedside. And Grandpa looked up and smiled because he knew they did him proud. So then they got the call from their potential employer. They went out and bought a new suit. They went in and interviewed. Then a week later got the call they were dreaming about, the job was theirs! Then they commuted in traffic for an hour each way to sit at their desk for 8 hours to work on Cory in the House. And somewhere in there was an overly excited middle manager whose job it was to raise moral and really get the team to rally around Cory in the House. And there were board meetings held. Work sessions held. Conference calls. Skype sessions. Story Boards were created... for Cory in the House. And they all knew they were doing God's work

LoL is the only game that it's fans probably hate it more than the actual haters.

Can confirm. Reaching 3k games played, still on average think " this is such a stupid game" twice every match

HoN for me, the game where even AI trash-talk one another.

Back to the Future on NES was pretty awful.

Or this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VMQvp53DSgo

This game was given to me for Christmas by a friend of mine. After this review had come out.

Back to the Futire was so awful. My friend and thought the level where you throw the soda mugs just went on forever. Turns out you can beat that level but it takes about 20 minutes and you can't get hit once. That's definitely a game where they spent all their money on the franchise name and nothing went toward developing a decent game. It belongs in a land fill with all those Atari ET cartridges.

Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. Thought i was good at video games when i was a kid. This game was impenetrable. I was sure I'd be able to beat it as an adult. Nope, just a shit game.

Quest 64 is a perfect example of a game that many people wanted to be good but is just horrible.

I was so excited: "Finally, an RPG on the N64!" Then it was such garbage. I almost bought it, but couldn't find it in any stores. I rented it from Blockbuster, and was glad I only sunk $5 into it as opposed to $50.

Didn't it use that weird 'real-time RPG' system where you ran around and fought inside a ring on each encounter, kinda like Parasite Eve, but shittier?

Yes it did. And with the wonky camera, it was a nightmare to control. I distinctly remember one battle where the ring popped up and I was next to a hill or mountain which took up 3/4 of the ring. I could only stay in this tiny little part of an already tiny arena. Meanwhile, the enemies were moving all over like there was no mountain there and kicking my ass. What a mess!

Yes you had a little ring you ran around in and you then chose your attack

There was also Aidyn Chronicles: The First Mage.

Kind of a buggy game but I enjoyed the atmosphere it had for an N64 game.

......am I the only person who legitimately loves that game?

I also enjoyed Quest 64! It felt...a bit raw. Like it could have used more polish....but I enjoyed it!

Subzero Mythologies

Pretty much they took a fighting game and it's controls and turned it into a side scroller. The controls sucked so much and with the traps if your timing wasn't perfect you wouldnt be able to get past it. Super frustrating

I'd probably say Plants Vs Zombies 2 only because they ruined a really good game with micro-transactions. Also they won't release it on PC. WTF!

I played it for about 6 minutes and deleted it, and still play the first PvZ's vase crack game on occasion.

Popcap didn't ruin it. EA did.

Shaq-Fu

When I was a kid and had my brothers' Sega Genesis and a few games for it, the only fighting game they had was Shaq-Fu. I guess I'm a bit biased because of this, but I actually don't think the game is as bad as people make it out to be.

That's totally fair. I was more making a joke than anything. You're right though, good memories can make anything seem better. Don't let me take that from ya.

I made my own video game once. I used this game making software and made a maze where you could shoot through the walls so you never had to actually solve the maze.

It was pretty bad

Aidyn Chronicles: The First Mage for N64.

It looked like it had all the making of a game I craved as a kid (basically what makes fantasy MMORPG like WOW wow - minus the MMO part).

In actuality the game was so fucking dark that I could not see what I was doing most of the time.

Star Wars: The Force Unleashed 2. I initially bought the game for PC, found out I couldn't run it, got the Wii version, and beat it in an afternoon. It was probably the worst gaming experience I've had.

The ps3, pc, and xbox360 verisons were okay but very short. The wii version was shit.

It felt more like dlc for the first game, which I'm not gonna complain about because at least the gameplay was ok, but it was padded out to Hell and back. And it was still obscenely short.

Pokemon Go

Before the downvote brigade comes in, I do think it's enjoyable, I just don't think it's good as a game.

A game, to me, needs to involve at least a significant degree of either skill or choice. The skill in Pokemon Go is very limited. Tossing Pokeballs is pretty easy and mindless, and while there is a tiny bit of skill in gym battles, it's a very small part of the game and most battles are so lopsided that skill doesn't matter.

There's even less of a choice element. And I mean meaningful choice. Yes, you have to choose to use Paper when the opponent has shown Rock, but that's not a real choice -- there was no viable alternative. When choices are obviously right or obviously wrong, it's not a real choice.

So, for those reasons I don't think it's really much of a game. I do think it's a pretty fun activity though.

It's not really a game so much as a gamified walking app

Basically, yeah. And as a walking app, it's not even that great, since it wasn't designed as a walking app. A really good walking app would have put more emphasis on the eggs, made collecting new pokemon more seamless, and had a more uniform spread of stops (to encourage you to walk just another half km to the next one).

Like a PokéWalker? A pedometer released with Pokémon Heart Gold and Soul Silver that allowed you to catch rare Pokémon and transfer them to your save file. After so many steps, you were awarded in-game currency. This currency could be used to unlock new locations on the PokéWalker to find new Pokémon, raise your chances of finding new Pokémon, and for mini-games. If two players were close enough, they could have a (simplified) Pokémon Battle with the battle system implemented for catching wild Pokémon.

Oh yeah I remember that. The only problem was that if you reset the game it wouldn't connect with the pokewalker. Fucking bullshit.

[–]Bronan_the_Brobarian 145ポイント146ポイント  (3子コメント)

It's Safari Zone, not Pokemon.

This is the best way to describe this app. Without the trainer to trainer battle or even wild pokemon vs trainer battle it can't truly be the pokemon we all know and love.

I played Ingress, the v1.0 of Pokemon GO. One day I spent 2 hours driving and walking to make a giant zone which was destroyed in minutes by a guy on my team making 2 portals neutral. Left and never went back.

I think Zombies, Run! has a good take on the real world integration thing, but I'd prefer it if you could actually die and then have to start all over. That'd really get me motivated to run.

I was totally expecting the classic fighting system with the 4 attacks and all. When I saw the actual battle I was like "what the fuck is this shit where is my classic pokemon"

shit i'm having an existential crisis about choice now
