I think he was decent defensively.

His passing though, for me was dire, glad Carrick was there to make the passes after Fella gets the ball.

The moment he tries to do both (not saying it's the only time he did, but it does stand out) he makes a mistake that causes a goal.

If it wasn't for his size, I'd rather have Schneiderlin.

Yea, he's upped his game defensively but that's it. He can't carry the ball forward, doesn't have a great pass on him. His contribution offensively is winning headers and while that is important, that's not enough to create good chances like a midfielder in his position should. Difference between him (and any of our other midfielders, honestly) and Pogba in that sense will be like day and night.

I can't say I enjoyed Carricks performance at all today. He was beaten in midfield too many times for my liking

Oh man when that leicester player ran circles around him on a counter

In fairness we give Rooney some leeway with his passing due to being at the euros and most of our passing was fairly shit today so maybe Fella deserves the same

Great defensively in the first half. Was good after that back pass too. Think he'll have his uses during the season, but his offensive shortcomings were definitely noticeable too. Meant Ibra dropping too deep to get any touch of the ball.

Offensively he's very limited, but when you use him to his strength he's very hard to stop. He's not going to be a playmaker or dribble past 10 players, i thought people would get that by now... He does the dirty work

I get that, but you can't only do the dirty work as a #8, you have to offer something going forward too. Otherwise you get what you saw today, striker dropping way too deep to get any touch of the ball. Even Mourinho mentioned in the post match interview that the team has to be creating for Ibra, Ibra shouldn't be dropping so deep to get the ball.

Of course, usually you have to do more but Jose obviously knows Fellaini's limits and played him to do the job he did. If he wanted more support to the forward men he would have played Herrera instead

But I still appreciate the times he tries to be more advance. There was a time a loose ball was in space and he drove forward to get it. Mendy did well to shield it, but that move was a bit uncouth for someone like Fella, I think the confidence is still mounting.

Seems risky to do that in 2-man mf but I appreciate Fellaini's determination to do as much as he can in mf.

Apart from the back pass that led to the goal he wasn't bad. Did his job, nothing spectacular mind.

Thought he was great bar the backpass

Got lucky that we now have Zlatan. At least he got an assist...

He was decent today.

However, I still don't understand why he makes the squad and Schweini doesn't.

Because Schweini is similar to Schneiderlin and Carrick and Herrera a bit but Fellaini is completely different.

He was a good presence but on the ball he was just dire. No creativity, no production, no nothing. Just sideways and backwards passing to Bailly.

As a defensive player myself watching Fellaini can be very frustrating. It's wonderful watching a game and seeing players at a level beyond anything you could ever hope to achieve yourself, as an attack is building you suddenly see a good defensive mid appear and quash any threat effortlessly. There's times when you spot dangerous space, but before you can even register it fully, in steps the player and the option is shut down.

Fellaini doesn't do that. He finds himself on top of other's toes so often. He gets split by attacks regularly, leaving space for players either side of him and causing the rest of the team to up their workrates.

Physically he has the build of a good defensive unit, but mentally he just doesn't play a good game.

On top of that, he is useless in linking play between defense and attack. He slows down our passing moves and has very little creativity or even desire to go forward and make something happen with his own work. It's good that he knows his limits with the ball and doesn't jeopardise possession needlessly, but the most important issue is that we should be demanding more of someone filling up a slot on our starting eleven.

Don't blame him too much for the goal. He was frustrating and cumbersome before and after that. For the goal he actually was surprisingly in a good position at the right time, just had a blip in concentration and massively under hit the pass.

And still Moyes, LVG, and Jose have played him regularly. Obviously three coaches with completely different styles see something in him that you don't see.

Fuck me for having an opinion in a thread that asked for opinions.

[–]TanqPhilWoodward!

Let me say it this way: if you know football, figure out WHY 2 and a half great managers keep him in the squad and play him regularly. But please don't pretend you see things that they don't see.

He was good for the most part but that backpass kind of ruined it.

He was good overall today, but the backpass is a glaring mistake that led to a goal, not just a small error. Of course people are looking at it. I still am very confused about him - we say (at Everton) he was a CAM who plays very well in tandem with the striker, and then say he did a good defensive job. What is his position, really?

I wouldn't say he played perfectly but he did alright

He was good defensively, but had issues with the passing.

[–]MadaraTheUchihahttp://www.howmanypremierleaguemedalshasstevengerrardwon.com/ 0

Appart from the error. Really needs to work on his passing. And a bit too slow for a partnership with carrick imo.

I have to be honest and say that he was descent... even after his error, with that back pass to De Gea, he didn't loose his composure... I think with Pogba coming, we wont see him start anymore, but I'm not mad at what he did today!

I thought he was great, won a lot of aerials, broke up play, passing was ok. Obviously at fault for the goal though

I think we're the only team that has a player like Fellaini and I don't see that as a good thing. He's not giving us some sort of super advantage - he's a limitation. I'd rather a more ball-playing midfielder, even if it means we win slightly less aerial duels a game.

Worst player on the pitch right after Rooney

What? He wasn't even the worst midfield player today

Of course, because worst midfielder was Rooney

That backpass reminded me of Jonny Evans under Moyes... fucking scary

In my opinion, he has his moments, but we need players that will do the job game in and game out.

We shouldn't have to make a thread every time Fellaini plays well. We should be making threads when he doesn't play well because it is out of character.

Our midfield is best described as an "enigma" You don't know what you're going to get game to game. Need consistency.
