Can we take a second to talk about Rooney's performance? (self.reddevils)

I feel like the overall result has shrouded what was an extremely sloppy and overall wasteful performance from him. The amount of time I heard "Oh fuck sake Rooney" in the pub earlier was sad, would much prefer to see Mhki given a chance as our 10.

What did you guys think?

I don't think he played amazing but looking at the match thread you'd think he had a mare, it wasn't bad, it wasn't good. A couple good runs, a couple shots on target, a couple chances created, a standard game overall

I dont think it was shrouded. Everyone watching the game saw how poor he was. Honestly think he should be on the bench and should be the one fighting for a spot on the team and Mkhi or Mata get the preference ahead of him. Not going to happen anytime soon though

Yeah, that's what worries me. Dropped him last two games already.

He needs to adjust to the speed of the premier league, and the only way he can do that is by playing.

He picked up in the last 25-30 minutes but there's something wrong with Rooney. I'm sorry but I don't buy the fact that age has hindered his ability to control the ball or his awareness. At times today he looked like a league one player. Hope Mourinho ends up getting the best out of him, never want to see a legend leave.

No coincidence that we look better with Mata on the pitch. Forward players are linking up, and Mata is entering the right spaces to put the opposing team out of balance.

Yep. I think Mkhi and Mata on the pitch, regardless of who is playing at #10 and on the wing, would give us so much better forward play than Rooney at the moment.

He was quite disappointing, didn't seem to get into the game.. though to be fair, Martial, Carrick and Ibra (except the goal) were underwhelming too. Rooney usually does take a bit of time to get settled into the season. So let's see how he works in the team in the first few league games.

It's pretty funny though, everyone saying that the players in the team need around 5 games to get into the new system and season and by half time of the Community Shield people were completely writing off Rooney (one even saying that a season long injury is the only way he'll be out of the starting XI. Seriously.).

I think he has to be dropped guys to be honest.

We simply have much better options. Rashford, Martial, Zlatan as strikers.

Mkhitaryan and Mata are better behind the striker.

I think he is going to hinder the progress of Rashford if this keeps up. He simply isn't good enough any more to lead a team wanting to win major trophies. He can still play is part as a squad player, as for a starter? He just isn't good enough any more. Contributed a lot to us and hope he will continue to, but it's just time for him to step aside.

He was pretty poor the last few years and has been unbelievably inconsistent. Sorry to say it, but I think his time is just up. His passing, his touch, his lack of pace which has deteriorated massively. He can still finish though, so for that reason he still has a part to play.

Everything must come to an end, and as above, it's not about who plays it can sometimes be about who does not play. If that makes sense.

You cannot say that. Sure, it was the first competitive game of the season, but he didn't do well, so what he deserves is a public execution, not another chance next week or the week after.

Honestly, it's his first touch that the biggest problem. His first touch is so poor that he then is having to stretch so far to try to play the ball, which is then obviously not going off well.

Definitely will need him to clean that up as his position is so crucial to playing that final ball into Ibra, how distributing back out wide- but cannot keep losing possession in the final third when balls are played into his feet.

On a serious note, very disappointed again. I've seen others point out other players were relatively poor also, but none have been consistently poor for so long. And it's Rooney that is keeping Mata and Mhkitaryan on the bench. He isn't a number 10. I'd rather see him play deeper. Well, I'd rather not see him play at all. Just make him our backup striker and not waste a good chance at winning the league.

It's typical Rooney of the last couple seasons. He needs a couple games. But I do agree, an absolutely horrid performance

He's the captain and has bags of experience. Both soft skills, in terms of actual pitch performances I don't understand what he does. It's like having a 35 year old Centre Midfielder in #10. Everything is so lethargic and laboured.

Theres no intelligent passes in between the lines. Everything goes wide, and when wazza does try and play between the lines with Ibra for instance it's usually his touch that lets him down. Mata would be lethal with Ibra if they both had a solid run together.

Heck even Wazzas shot has degraded. He's shooting is no where near as frequent, accurate or fast enough. It's not bandwagoning, this happens every season. He has a few games were he looks fantastic. But nowadays his really good performances can all be counted on one hand. Most of the time if Wazza looks tidy, doesn't give the ball away and manages to pull off a few good passes it's a good performance. I don't think he's good enough but that's just my opinion.

Eventually, at around January, he'll start doing some decent shit, or get injured, whatever.

It's the start of the season with a less than optimal pre-season... we will probably see some players struggle. It is true that he wasn't good enough, but it might change later on. Or not. We will see.
It also depends on how he fits into Mourinho's tactics and how well can Rooney adapt to match his expectations. Either way, it is reassuring that we have great alternatives.
