They decided that being civil was more important than being decent. So it became a place where the MO was to calmly explain to, say, a racist exactly why they were a racist, rather than just telling them to fuck off.

Uh no, back when I was the head mod I specifically said you could be mean as long as you 1) didn't tell them to kill themselves or 2) use that cringey over the top condescending crap that basically amounted to "go get raped by a nazi".
