[Opinion Post] Right Back (self.reddevils)

I'm going to be submitting a post a day for each position on the team which should create some discussion until the season begins. These posts are to compare the current options and general discussions surrounding each position. Yesterday was goalkeeper's turn, today is Right Back!

I would rather see Fosu-Mensah as CB or CDM instead.

I have not seen enough of Fabinho in order to know how much he would improve us. But none of us have seen enough of Darmian either. I would really like to see him get a chance to prove himself this season.

I'm quite happy with Darmian and Valencia tbh. Wouldn't be upset if we signed Fabinho though.

Id love Fabinho and Darmian to rotate, but I love Valencia and want him to have game time too. Dilemmas.

Mourinho hardly rotates his defenders.

There's going to be a starting RB, and a second choice who probably won't see much game-time unless the other is injured or horrifically out of form.

That's a tough one. Darmian had brilliant start of last season, but then dropped to average. Made mistakes in defence and didn't create enough in attack. Valencia is usually solid and does his job, but that's all. He doesn't really give anything extra. But judging on last season, summer tournaments and pre-season so far, I'd say that Antonio should be first choice.

Wouldn't say that RB is Fosu-Mensah primary position, but he can definitely fill the gaps there. I would also like to mention Ashley Young. I really like him playing there. He's surprisingly good defensive-wise and makes great overlapping runs. There's also Donald Love, who should probably seek to continue his career somewhere else.

Fabinho would be fantastic addition to our squad. I really wanted him in the first place last summer instead of Darmian. But I feel like it'd be a little unfair to give up so fast on Matteo. And we have other priorities (CB).

I dislike Valencia at RB, really good going forward against weaker opposition but the better LW players tend to know how to punish him defensively but I don't think he's close to being our first team RW, I would buy another RB but its almost definitely going to result in little to no game time for Valencia or Darmain. Maybe Valencia to be back up RW and being in a RB?

Only opinion I have is id like for us to get a specialist RB in the mould of Darmain (just a bit better in quality all round) and not rely on stop gaps such as Valencia.

I've never been Valencia's biggest fan post leg break but since then his attacking and risk taking tendencacies have really decreased as has his influence on games. He works hard and obviously loves wearing the shirt but he's really not the RB you need if you have aspirations of getting back on top :(

I agree with you. Valencia offers no added benefits. He is well past his prime. We should not be content with him being as our first preference in that position. What all of us want is, Darmian to improve a little bit more in that position. I think he is a fantastic player and he just needs bit more stable games and bit more support up front ie in right wing position.

I think we've got enough, Smalling, Bailly, Jones, Rojo, Blind, McNair and also Fosu-Mensah can play there. If we did get one he would definitely be a back-up and I doubt he would get much playing time if any.

Back-up to the top tier options we have of Smalling and.... ?

Jones is average and made of glass. Rojo is just shit. Mcnair is shit. Blind will be exposed in a team that doesnt sit back all game. Bailly is an unknown.

Just because Bailly is unknown doesn't mean he should be relegated to 3rd choice, Blind and Jones 4th and 5th. At the speed we got Bailly he seems like he was Mourinho's first choice for a CB this Summer

I'm not saying they're first team starters, Jones and Rojo are fine backups imo. Blind and Bailly would be challenging for that other centre-back spot and McNair, Timmy and Tuanzebe would be a last resort. Getting a new centre-back would be pointless, we already have a lot of players in that position.

That'd be right back imo, we only have one real right back (Darmian) and he hasn't really impressed, other than those first couple of games at the the start of last season.

This might get downvoted, but I've never really warmed up to Darmian. I feel he's an honest, down to earth, hardworking player and can regularly have a 7/10 game but I have a nagging feeling that he'll want to return to Italy sooner rather than later (would LOVE to be proven wrong).

Darmian : attacking :: Valencia : defending... can do an adequate job but can't be relied upon day-in, day-out. If we can get a Evra/Shaw for the RB/RWB position, then it'd be awesome. I've never seen Fabinho play so I don't know if he can be that player.

I feel TFM shouldn't be played too often at RB else he'll go the Jones route. My personal opinion is that he should be played at CDM (and CB at times to hone his defending/positioning skills).

Darmian as first choice would be fine, we're probably in need of a experienced CB much more than a RB. IMO Valencia is subpar in defence and his crosses aren't particularly great, so I wouldn't mind Fabinho if the rumours are true.

Happy to have Darmian in the squad but pretty sure Mou will prefer both Valencia and Bailly over him for their athleticism.

TFM needs to be played as the DM that he really is. Liked Darmian at the start of last season so if he can get back to that level then we'll be fine otherwise maybe moving him on for Fabinho would be a good move. Valencia is a great back up but not a starter for me, no matter how much I do like him.

I'd honestly prefer Fabinho to Darmian. Darmian had a few good games at the start of the season and that's all people seem to be going on about, they forget that for the rest of the season he was poor (when he wasn't injured). I think it'll be good for Darmian anyway, a little competition never hurt anyone. I don't like Valencia in that position and I haven't seen enough of Fosu-Mensah.

I think Darmian was just one of those players that Van Gaal ruined. His performance against Arsenal was shit, he got ripped by Sanchez repeatedly. I imagine Van Gaal singled him out after that as he was reported to do, which shot gos confidence and subsequently his form.

Darmian will be good if he plays like he did at the start of last season.

Valencia came back from injury and definitely improved our team, more so in attack.

Fosu Mensah is young and has impressed me in all the positions he has played. Especially at CB against Watford

I think TFM should go on loan.

If Fabinho comes in, then either Darmian or Valencia has to go. Mourinho seems to prefer a small squad like he had at Chelsea. I haven't seen him [Fabinho] play so I don't know what he makes him special.
