[Opinion Post] Right Wing (self.reddevils)

I'm going to be submitting a post a day for each position on the team which should create some discussion until the season begins. These posts are to compare the current options and general discussions surrounding each position. Yesterday was central midfield.

All stats for each player are compiled specifically for each position, not their stats as a whole

  • Are you happy with the right wing options (assuming Mkhitaryan does play there?)

  • Any promising youngsters you foresee playing a role for us in the future on that wing?

Im reasonably content with Mkhitaryan and Lingard as first choice and backup.

Lets face it unless we buy a right back (which may still happen) Valencia will be playing there probably, I prefer Young on the left and its looking increasingly like Adnans gone.

Which just leaves Mata who will probably make the odd cameo there and in AMC.

It seems like Mourinho wants Memphis to learn how to play on the right because he was playing there against Galatasaray.

I think he needs to be able to play there in order to improve his role. We have a lot of minutes on the left dedicated to Martial, so if Memphis is to have any kind of significant contribution on this season, it will probably be from the bench or through rotation, and showing ability to play either wing would be huge in getting him more opportunities

You didn't, but changes like this are simple and commmon tactical orders. If he was being prepared to play (mainly) on the right, wouldn't he play there the whole game?

Why does it matter if it tactical order or not? I am just saying the fact he is even on the right can suggest that there is an interest in Mourinho to see how he operates there.

bring on the hate but i don't really rate Lingard, at least as a starter, definitely as a 20-30 min sub but imo he wouldn't be near my starting XI

Me too, I think he's a really good RB and the best one we have. I just miss watching him as a RW, always admired the lad.

Besides Mkhi our right wing is a bit iffy imo. I, personally, really enjoy watching Lingard play and believe he and Young will be more than sufficient as back-ups, but I know many people don't feel the same way. Curious as what Mou thinks and if we'll get more RW players/play someone else there this season.

I agree, Lingard is a suitable backup, his linkup play with Rashford last year was a pleasant surprise. That and his work rate (which will be effective with Mourinho) are his best attributes. Maybe he'll develop into a lesser Willian this year

I would rather see Rashford tear across wing backs than anyone on this list. Especially when strikers position is occupied by Zlatan. None of the others are game changers, except perhaps Mikhi.

I think we are short in this department. Mkhitaryan will definitely be the first choice RW but apart from him we just don't have any quality player for the RW. Lingard too prefers to play as a LW or as a no.10 and Mkhitaryan is also not a genuine wide player. Personally I believe that getting a specialist right wing player should be high on the priority list or it could hurt us. Someone like Sane would have been brilliant but City have done brilliantly to sign him and Gabriel Jesus, both of these players would have improved us massively as well.
