I've seen it suggested that Martial might regress a little this year given his huge workload last season and Euros, so hopefully he's fully fit and recharged because he should have LW locked down this year. We'll have a lot of flexibility with subs, and last night the front four were moving all over the field. I can imagine a situation where Zlatan comes out, Martial moves up top, and Memphis comes in on the left.

At this point, I think Ash is a valuable glue guy. He's one of the few left that's won things with SAF and seems like an awesome dude, and for as much shit as he gets he'll always pop up with a big performance out of the blue.

Exactly. I love watching Young because you know he's going to put his all into the game.

I also expect teams to shut Martial down a little more effectively this year. He's great at what he does, but I'm not convinced he has a huge repertoire of moves. Hope he proves me wrong.

So wrong. He has an arsenal of moves. I am very excited to see what he can do this year.

Don't think it'll even be because of work load, every young player is inconsistent, I follow Ajax closely as well and I see the exact same thing every year, El Ghazi and Fischer are some recent ones.

Toto looked better over time last night, by the end he was dribbling like normal, but his end product clearly was still a little rusty.

Rio made a great point last night on BT that Martial needs to work on his off-the-ball movement to get to the next level, especially if we're using more static players like Zlatan and Rooney in the team.

Yeah you could almost see Ibra being visibly irked about the off-the-ball movement from all of the attacking three last night. It'll come though in time I'm sure.

100% agree. For this reason I would not be surprised to see lingard starting games.

Loved how he (Edit: Young) came on yesterday and just started putting challenges in. (he didn't win many to be fair, but his desire to get "stuck in" was good to see)

May I ask why? Because he isn't elite, taking up game time Januzaj or someone else could use to develop?

[–]MylesVEon a cold, rainy night at Zlatan 6

    • Very content with what we have. Shaw's return only helps our forwards down the left.

    • I can see Zlatan and Rooney not playing every game this year. There's the unpredictable, too, like injuries. But since signing Mhki I feel we are looking very good in attack. We have a pretty fluid group to play across the three attacking midfield roles, burgeoning young and talented forwards, and a wily and experienced 9 and 10 duo.

    • Memphis should take his first season with the club in stride, endeavor, and persevere. He has the capability to be a world beater. Getting a run of games and finding some good form is crucial to build his confidence back up. I have firm faith he will do just that this season. Yet again, Luke Shaw coming back is crucial. I am far less optimistic over Januzaj, and think a permanent move away from United is probably best by this point.

    • Chong is supposed to be fucking class. Callum Gribbin could end up being a great winger imo (but i also think he could be a great 8 or 10)

I think Martial is the obvious starter, and should look to improve with less pressure from defenders due to Shaw returning and Zlatan warranting close coverage from CB's.

I think he'll actually spend a decent amount of time playing centrally. Zlatan will drop deep and Shaw will be overlapping, so he'll hopefully fill and exploit the space those two create. Those three attacking one side of a defense is terrifying. Do you choose to leave Zlatan free near the box, Martial to dribble in space, or Shaw running onto a ball down the wing?

    [–]ChegismDe Gea 4

I want Martial to watch every video of Henry in existence. He was always in that kind of Inside-Forward space, right on the corner of the box. I don't want Martial hugging the touchline or on the penalty spot, but right there on the corner, running in at an angle. That leaves Zlatan, and probably Mhik to be in the box, #10 on the edge and Shaw to be the wide guy.

    [–]Bunch_of_BangersCantona 10ポイント11ポイント  (12子コメント)

I love Martial, but I am also hoping for a bounce back season from Memphis. Young, if he stays healthy and stops diving, could be a big piece in Mou's team moving forward. Adnan, I don't see playing for us anytime soon. I had big hopes for him when I first saw him play, but he hasn't progressed since year one. Lingard is the hometown hero. The Dabberman should get some significant minutes this year because of his work up and down the field, and his knack of scoring the big goal. Should be quite a battle moving forward.

Well yesterday he had a couple of crosses in from the right that looked good, and at least once Mkhitaryan was the only one in the box to receive it. I don't see Martial drift out to the right that often, but a front four of:

                 Ibra
    Martial - Memphis - Mkhitaryan

is something I'd like to see at least once, with fluidity at least between CAM and RW. Ibra seems to want to drift back a bit to play passes so any of the other 3 could make runs into the box.

It might not work, it might. I've been wanting to see it for a while.

Bro I want to see Memphis play week in week out more than anyone here but we all know he won't be able to play #10.. at least not from what I've seen. Switch Mkhi and Memphis' positions and the line up looks good.. I really hope Memphis can do it at right wing.. it's the only way he has a career at united

Surely you would want Mkhitaryan at 10 if either of them? Played there last year for Dortmund and won player of the year. I think Memphis thrives on space to run in to too much to be an effective number 10, there's not enough space for him to operate effectively there.

Well to answer both you and /u/hitpop, I don't see that front 4 being rigid, just their starting positions. It would give Memphis the opportunities to run into space on either wing on a counter attack. Depending on where he goes, Martial can run into the box while Ibra stays in the #10 spot or Mkhitaryan can drift into the #10.

Unpredictable counter attacking football is my favourite to watch, if everyone hits their full potential that's what I'd like to see. Maybe I'll just have to live out that dream in fifa.

Good point actually. I would love to see that line up but would never happen with Rooney at the club

Na I know exactly what you mean man, and fully back it as a proposition. Only thing is if we played Memphis in the 10 in a 4-2-3-1 our midfield would look pretty light. With Rooney in there, he can drop back slightly giving us a bit more robustness. Memphis @ 10 would be ridiculosuly attacking

He's not suited to that position. He needs time and space to run into for his game to excel.

I love Martial, but I am also hoping for a bounce back season from Memphis

There is absolutely no chance that Martial, Memphis, Lingard and Young can all simultaneously be involved regularly and have good seasons.

We can only pick 11 players. When in the history of football ever has a team had more than 14 players who've had great seasons? Someone has to miss out.

This kind of mindless positivity, all our players are going to be great even the ones that play in the same positions, is so stupid.

It's extremely unlikely that both Memphis and Martial will both have great years unless 2 out of Mkitaryan, Zlatan and Rashford are shitty meaning they can both squeeze in the team.

    you're a huge tosser

Thanks for posting this Feezbull! I didn't expect to have internet until really late but am on a stagecoach bus right now for 2 hours and it has internal free wifi and USB plug sockets too. The future is here.

Left wing is actually the position I am most assured about personally. Martial obviously first choice but I think Memphis under Mourinho should push on too and he'll probably get smaller teams in Europa and Capital one cup to beat on and build up his confidence.

Behind them we have Ashley Young who could still do a solid job and is still one of our better crossers of the ball and then players like Lingard and Januzaj who can easily step in and that's before we even start looking at the U21s for backup (know there's a couple of promising names there too).

So all in all I'd say LW is easily the position I worry the least about (apart from GK obviously).

We are pretty much covered in Left Wing when looking at players like Memphis, Martial, Rashford and probably Januzaj, all of them who could easily fill in that role given the opportunity. Unlike last year, when Martial started most matches in LW to accomodate Rashford or Rooney in ST role, under new incoming manager, every player could keep their difficulties into one side and start afresh to prove their worth and earn a starting place. Notably, Januzaj and Memphis have a glorious opportunity to show off their worthiness, though former would find it hard to get a chance given his recent expel from the 22-man squad chosen by Mourinho. For Memphis, this season could turn out to be a make or break one, considering how much he struggled in his debut season with the club.

With the arrival of Luke Shaw, Memphis could once again form a formidable partnership, they almost put together during the start of last season only to be spoiled by an horrendous injury suffered by English full back which ruled him out for rest of the season. So with his arrival, I'm very much optimistic about Memphis's revival.

Backup wise, we have Ashley Young who could fill in whenever needed, also Rashford could also have a go given his eloquent skills and pace. Since, Mourinho is mostly be using a short 22-man squad, I don't think he'll buy a player to this position.

As long as Memphis and Martial are playing, I'm happy with our backups and rotation. They both should get enough playing time, which of course is possible given the Europa league participation and other cup competitions. More importantly, they should also try to maintain that consistency which is most important to survive nine month long journey.

Left wing is a strong place for us right now. It's Martial's to lose, and we have Memphis who can step up/rotate there, as well as Young for backup and potentially Januzaj. More than enough in that position I think, and with Shaw bombing down the wing, hopefully it'll mean Martial can drift inside a little more.

I am sorry but Memphis just does not do it for me. I have not really seen anything from him at United that deserves this praise he receives here. I am hoping someone can show me something to prove otherwise.

    [–]contact_hiRooney 0ポイント1ポイント  (0子コメント)

    He doesn't get praise?

He certainly gets backing (including from me) to come good. I guess that's based on his amazing last season in Holland and the flashes of brilliance he's shown when confident. Hopefully he's the one to show you something to prove otherwise.

    [–]DelTrottervan Nistelrooy 0

Memphis remains as slow and stocky as before. I wish he would try to get a more agile physique. Ashley Young's 31, is more spritely and changes direction faster. There's no reason not to persist but wouldn't care a great deal if we cut our losses either.

Ashley is next best after Martial. Injury prone.

We're clearly moving forward with these left wingers and are backing Memphis, otherwise a new LW would be in.

I'm interested to see how Martial develops this season.

His big strength is receiving the ball about 40yards from goal and then dribbling at pace.

However, from what I've seen of pre-season, it seems Mou is demanding big contributions from both wingers: dribbling (as is his strength) but also switching flanks and making diagonal runs in behind.

If I had to pick one area that Martial needs to improve to take his game to the next level, it's making runs in behind. He is so good at dribbling that he rarely needs to make those runs, but if he can develop that skill he will be a potent force.

He has the speed to make runs from wide that will put him through on goal, he just needs to learn how to vary those runs/when to make them vs receiving the ball at feet and dribbling.

Martial will be untouchable for both Memphis and the rest of the BPL defenders if he continues where he left off last season. Think Memphis will be sold next summer.
