I’m a Religious Studies and anthropology researcher based in Oulu in northern Finland. I am Adjunct Professor of the Anthropology of Religion and Finnish Culture at Oulu University. I also write for various magazines and newspapers.
I originally read Theology at Durham University, graduating in 2002. I then did a PhD in Religious Studies at Aberdeen University, which I completed in 2005. I became Adjunct Professor (Docent) of Anthropology at Oulu University in 2011. My PhD was a participant observation study of student evangelical groups at British and Dutch universities. The research for my docentship (which is, in some respects, like a higher doctorate) focussed on my participant observation research into Finnish culture and religion. My current research examines both religion and culture in terms of evolutionary psychology, especially personality and intelligence.
My articles have appeared in a variety of newspapers and magazines including the Daily Telegraph, Times Educational Supplement and the Fortean Times.
My hobbies include Indian cooking, genealogy, darts and my two children.
