The convention was "FurFest Northwest", which was scheduled to happen in Augest 2006 in Moscow, Idaho of all places.
A lot of info is on the wikifur page about it, but here's a quick rundown of things.
- In July, someone posted on Artist Beware voicing their concern about the con due to various reasons. (Lack of info on the site, no programs scheduled except two fursuit parades, photoshoot and talent show.)
- Rex responds to the AB post and threatens legal action against the person who made the post, claiming it's all based on rumors and unfounded criticisms.
- The planned hotel has a fire and someone posted on the consite's forums asking if everythings alright, much to the person's surprise they found their post deleated. They mention it on AB and find out Rex deleated the post since apparently that was detrimental to the con.
- Around that point the con staff start getting annoyed that in order to find out any problems/concerns they have to go to a 3rd party site like AB since Rex keeps deleating posts on the consite's forums. (It didn't help that Rex later set the forums into "Administrator Approval" mode for new accounts and straight-up deleated the forums where one can leave feedback.)
- A month before the con was scheduled to open, Rex announced the con was cancelled. First he blamed it on the lack of registrations (Only 20 registered), but then he later changed the message to instead blame it on Seattle area furs, claiming they were causing destructive drama, a smear campaign etc.
Rex amusingly said this

RainFurrest is my home con, and it's more successful than anything you could have thrown together. Get bent, Rex.

Also, back in late 2011/2012 Rex did mention he was looking to start a con in San Francisco. Claiming he found a sutible hotel with rooms for around $80 or so. Thing is, he said that in the midst of a amusing rant which showed he still doesn't know much about cons.
He was doing a big rant against Further Confusion who was moving into San Jose's convention center in 2012, claiming that everything was so expensive that it was a con for the 1%…even though in 2012, all the hotels for FC were cheaper then every hotel for Anthrocon.
Rex was also displeased that if you reserved a room at the hotel, you'd be charged one night's stay. To which he said said and asked "Anthrocon doesn't do this, do you know who else does?" Why yes, I do know a con that does that. Anthrocon. Since 2008.
Finally, another thing that Rex didn't buy was that FC had to pay for any rooms in the room block that wern't sold…even though that's convention/hotel 101. If a room block isn't compleately sold, the con has to pay for the rooms that the hotel held for them.

By the way, in case anybody hasn't seen this and would like to read it, here's the drama he claimed some Seattle furs started that killed the con; in reality, it seems to have been one person, who had some real concerns. This does clear up a misconception I had– it looks like he didn't have it in Seattle because of high costs, but then, RainFurrest was a start-up at a dinky hotel here.

So, in my last response to FurFright, I asked them if they would address the issues I brought up. Actually, I gave them a choice: stop arguing with me and address my issues, or leave me alone.
Obviously FurFright is run by egomaniacs who are more concerned with their individual popularity than with running a convention.
"Oh, poor Rex" you are probably thinking to yourself. This hurt Rex's feelings and now he's all 'butthurt' about it?
Or maybe, just maybe, FurFright has a legal obligation to me and to you. You see, FurFright is a convention, but to have a convention, you have to have an organization to operate it, a business. Most conventions, as is the case with FurFright, are run by non-profit, 501c3, organizations. And to put on an event, it must be a fundraiser. And the event must be conducted with the overall purpose of raising money.
I could easily argue that this is not the case with FurFright. You see, I have money, and I have been prevented from attending (by my questions not being answered, and by being personally attacked.) This means, the event was not organized to raise money for a non-profit group, as is required by law. The event then, is what we all know it to be, a party, and only those who don't piss off the staff (by expecting them to do their job) are invited to this party. This means that the event is not within the confines of the definition of a fundraiser, meaning that FurFright, in treating me the way they did - including telling me that they would not allow me to promote the rally because it violates their 501c3 charter - violated their 501c3 charter. Does anyone else see the irony?

I did some more thinking about this issue. I realized that I never take anything personally when I am bothered enough to post about it as I have here. What FurFright did pissed me off for reasons I couldn't immediately explain. You see, FurFright is a fundraising event put on by the non-profit organization behind FurFright. That organization is required by law to ensure that the event is primarily for raising money for a non-profit organization. And how they treated me evidences that such is not the case, and therefore is clear evidence that the organization behind FurFright is violating their charter. And that charter is to protect the public trust, so what FurFright has done is give furries a bad name by cheating their tax-exempt status.
Furry conventions bother many people. But the justification for all furry conventions operated by non-profits is that they are fundraisers for non-profit charity organizations. It balances the public good with the entertainment of furries. But when that public good is violated by staff which fails to abide by the rules the public agreed upon for operation of a non-profit; the event no longer serves the public good, and only serves furries, and thus violates the public trust and demonstrates to the public that we furries are bad and deserve the reputation we have in the media.
If you think its okay for furries to have a bad name, and don't complain about how it affects you, then fine, do nothing. But if you do care, you will point this out to the staff of these conventions, or you will do your duty as an American citizen and file a complaint with the IRS, as I am about to do.
