Sounds like more of a personal opinion than a real complaint

The fact that there is no other option than "save the commonwealth" or "be the good guy" in either game is a complaint.

There are other options. The BoS lets you force dirt farmers to give them provisions without recompense. In Fallout 3 you can infect the waters of the Capital Wasteland with FeV, if I remember correctly. You can enslave people in Fo3. You can enslave a child in Fo4.

You sell a kid to the Gunners. Once.

I must've forgot about the FeV thing.

And that one thing BoS does makes them evil?

Good and evil are left open to interpretation in this game, unlike in every other game where a visible meter is changed for every non neutral action.

With the BoS, you have the opportunity to blow up the Institute with no survivors, even innocent people. With the BoS, you eventually get the choice to murder an innocent synth Danse for no reasons other than that he is a synth.

Player opinion makes the morality, but some factions are less debatable than others. Surely nobody considers the minutemen evil, but whereas I think the BoS are good because they impose order on a wasteland, others compare them to fascist states.

Either way with the BoS, it's the fact they're doing because they think it's for the greater good. Caesar's Legion knew damn well they weren't in the right, and Caesar just wanted power. Every choice can be alluded to "it's for the greater good". Institute, BoS, even the Railroad all believe what they're doing is right.

Literally every faction believes that they are right. None of them, not even the Legion, have said "We're evil but lol who cares."

Caesar's Legion was undoubtedly the evil faction. That can't be argued. There is no outright evil faction in FO4.

Your original argument was that they didn't believe they were evil. They do not believe they are evil, though it is clear to many they are. There is no outright evil faction in Fo4, and this is both a welcome change and I believe an intentional design choice.

Fo3: BoS complete good, Enclave complete bad.

FnV: NCR complete good, House neutral/ Yes Man neutral, Legion bad.

Fo4: Minuteman completely good, all others debatable.

It was done for the same reason they removed karma. To make the story something you can actually think about instead of say, "I'm doing an evil run this time."

Dude New Vegas does have that exact "problem". In order to progress the game you have to work to hunt down Benny. What if I don't want to, what if my courier doesn't care or is scared of Benny.

It's just a fact that RPGs have a narrative and you have to follow it. Hell in Fallout you have to hunt down the water chip or the game full on ends. Game over. You can't play a character who leaves the vault and is in awe of the new world and decided to fuck the vault and make his own way. See what I'm saying?

That's true, but that first Benny encounter was to set you up in the actual power struggle of the main story.

One more thing, I really hate how all the factions are so goddamn blatant with the self-righteous we must save the commonwealth shit. Especially the Minutemen.

I want to create a community of survivors, not some goody two-shoes cunts.
