Honest answer, and this will go against what a lot of people will tell you, stay away from the Bishop Blaise

Its a dive now and just full of idiots that want to pretend they are firm lads.

Just enjoy yourself and remember if your traveling the ground is nowhere near the city centre so you will have to travel to and from the ground to the centre.

Samuel Platts is good for a song and a drink before a game

For years Ive heard people talk about it and Ive never knew where it was.

Just decided to search for it now and I realized its where my old neighbor goes before every game. I went with him once and got shitfaced before a Manchester derby there. I will say it was a decent place to drink, much nicer than Bishop Blaise

Thanks for this comment. I actually thought about visiting it as I saw a lot of videos about it on Youtube. Any decent bars to visit?

As an "outsider" (aka American) - I went to Bishop's last season and had a good time. Are there obvious tourists there? Yes. Was the atmosphere nonetheless excellent? Absolutely. And that was for the Villa game, for crying out loud.

While you're there - take the stadium tour. Just do it.

Lastly, the subreddit has a good wiki on what to do while you're visiting. I recommend it.

Problem is, as /u/Creamy_Goodne55 said, more and more people are getting into the firm image, and I cannot be arsed with all that bollocks. I haven't been to a United game in a while, but if Bishop's Blaize is getting full of those lads, then fuck that.

Help me out - I'm American. What is a 'firm lad'?

Because in American parlance - it's like saying the pub is full of buff gay guys.

[–]DesOconnorScholesy 1ポイント2ポイント  (1子コメント)

No problem! Firms are the gangs football supporters identify themselves as part of.

Aaahh. That makes far more sense. Thank you for the explanation (and not judging me for not knowing).

In that case - yes, I absolutely understand the hesitation about going to Bishop's - my wife was not terribly comfortable in the crowd.

Edit: Thank you /u/ubergorp /u/Creamy_Goodne55 and /u/M-smife as well!

Kinda like football hooligans, like the English equivalent of the Russian ultras at the Euros.

Basically, dickheads who think that supporting a football team means that they should fight opposition fans

Firms are a 80s culture that intercity kids are desperate to bring back.

Its essentially back in the day fans used to go to away games in big groups on busses and just look for other fans to fight. This then turned into groups organizing for fights with other groups. It gave English fans a bad name (which is why a lot of the police just wanted to blame the likes of Hillsborough on "drunken fans") and got us banned from Europe.

firm lad is a word used for hooligan,

How much does the stadium tour cost? Do you need to reserve in advance?

[–]murica_sauceVidić 0ポイント1ポイント  (0子コメント)

It's only a few pounds. I reserved in advance, though people say there's no need to. Tons of information is available on the Club's website about it: http://www.manutd.com/en/Visit-Old-Trafford/Museum-And-Stadium-Tour/Welcome.aspx

Are you English? (Not a loaded question, just would help me realise what would be the most worthwhile thing(s) for you to do.

EDIT: Just seen that you aren't. I'd go Sam Platts, but there are places to drink around Salford. Get some chips and have a Bovril. Bovrils aren't really a thing outside England I don't think, and they're not really Summery, but they're delicious.

What is it with this resurgence in hooliganism? It's generally not properly practiced, but the 'casuals' thing has come back around recently.
