The problem is, economically disadvantaged white men didn't have a voice.
The left told them they should shut up and enjoy their white privilege. But those men felt like the system that was supposedly built to keep them ahead never benefited them.
The right payed lip service to them, but ignored their problems, and even made them worse by cutting welfare.
Both Republican and Democrat policies have helped the wealthy more than the lower classes.
Mass immigration is indeed a net benefit to the economy, but it disproportionately benefits the elites. The lower classes are worse off because of it. Wages stagnate or fall because the labor pool grows dramatically, and they now have to compete with people who will do the same work for far less money.
Few, if any of them, can afford higher education. They can't just get better jobs, and if all them did wages for those jobs would fall too.
We cannot afford to dismiss them because they have white privilege or male privilege.
The left needs to listen to them. Help them and the people they compete with unionize. Or, yes, restrict immigration.
Both sides need to realize that what's good for wall street is not necessarily what's good for the people.
We need to listen before the disenfranchised white people decide the only way to get a voice is to exercise their second amendment rights.
Trump is a worthless demagogue who must be stopped, but we cannot afford to dismiss his supporters as racist simpletons.
