Additionally I think we need more nuance in the way we talk about privilege. I have a friend that comes from a rich family in the Gambia, and knows the president an island nation. In terms of walking down the streets of New York who is more likely to get stopped and frisked I am absolutely more privileged. But my mom is a librarian and my dad is a social worker, neither of which have shit to offer in terms of nepotism. In that sense he is more privileged than me. White privilege doesn't automatically mean your life is great, and using it to ignore a class of the economically disadvantaged plays in perfectly to the narrative of the alt-right.

Exactly. Socioeconomic status has much more of an effect on a person than race or gender in the long term. Race and gender can cause day to day problems ranging from minor annoyances to life changing trauma, but even white males face discrimination if they look poor.

I used to be homeless, and nobody would give me the time of day unless my clothes were clean and my hair was groomed. Not to mention the constant police harassment.

I don't understand why so many people lack even a cursory understanding of white privilege. We're literally on the Internet. Right now. And yet people just go on just assuming what the term means without ever bothering to look it up.

And that ignorance allows those who perhaps don't like minorities very much to shape the narrative of what white privilege means.

The left doesn't tell people to shut up and enjoy their white privilege. That's just idiotic. That's the narrative people buy into because it's so much easier to be spoon fed than to grab up the spoon and feed yourself.

White privilege (or white skin privilege) is a term for societal privileges that benefit people identified as white in Western countries, beyond what is commonly experienced by non-white people under the same social, political, or economic circumstances.

Literally the first paragraph the white privilege Wiki page. White privilege ain't talkin about rich black people and poor white people. It's about how, all other things being equal, minorities still face hurdles because of their minority status that the majority do not face.

Right. I was grossly simplifying a certain narrative, that people feel that academia and politicians are too far disconnected from the day to day realities of their lives. There is a huge rural-urban divide.

White privilege is very real in urban areas, but is much much less of a factor in nearly homogeneous rural areas. Areas where most of the orange menace's base resides.

Shut up and enjoy your white privilege.
