[MODPOST] Update to the sub-reddit policy on downvotes (self.reddevils)

Hi all,

After much deliberation between the mod team and the community at large, we have taken steps to combat downvoting and brigading within the sub.

As such, voting is no longer possible without being subscribed to the sub, and the downvote button has been removed.

That second part is a temporary experiment, and one we'll look to review in a couple of weeks to see how people feel about it.

Finally, and most importantly, we NEED to reiterate that the upvote button is there as well. A lot of people will read, comment and post, but never actually upvote comments and posts.

To help promote content (whether it's an opinion you agree with or not), click the upvote button to keep things in the positive. Also, don't forget to check /new or to filter some of the larger posts by newest to see the new comments/posts in their infancy and help boost them!

Well, let us know how you think and we'll get in touch with a vote soon to see if people want to keep this as it is.

If downvoting was used correctly by most then yes it's a good feature but the problem is too many people all across Reddit use it incorrectly. You can make a perfectly well formed argument with facts and figures to back up your view and if it's against what people want to be true you get downvoted.

The voting after all is there to make sure posts that add to the discussion are kept visible while the shitposts that add nothing are hidden and your voting should be on if the post was a good one not if you agree with the opinion

Seriously this is so dumb. People need to grow up and stop crying about being downvoted. If you say something stupid or rash you should be downvoted. Stop taking it so personally.

Mods you have normally been outstanding but you really fucked this one up. Sorry. All this is going to do is promote negative comments either by stupid people who know they wont get downvoted or by people replying to a dumb comment because there is no downvote button.

Isn't there a way to have it so some people can hide their scores while others can show theirs if they want?

Come on people grow up. Stop crying because there isn't a positive reaction every time you participate. I've been up voted a bunch and I have been downvoted a bunch too. Just because some people disagree with me sometimes doesn't mean I take it personally, and in the end I was happy I had a system that allowed me to see if there were others who agreed with me or if I was way off with an assumption.

To those that downvoted me in the past thanks for your opinion. most of the time you gave me a reply as to why you thought I was wrong, or made me realize I made a rash statement that was usually emotionally charged. Hopefully the button will be back soon.

We've had a load of problems with brigading and a few bots. This does help get around a few of those issues (I've been asking mod teams on other subs to get their input, they have seen notable improvements over time once the people with RES stop showing how easy pressing Z is in the first day or so).

Mobile users aren't affected by CSS updates, so nothing changes there.

Also RES users still have the ability to bypass all of this. There is a way to stop that being possible, but you can royally shag a subreddit CSS doing it.

Yeah that's what always annoys me most. Its bad enough to downvote someone when they have actually put in effort to make a post that contributes positively to the disucussion just because you don't agree with their point but the fact that so many of those who downvote can't even be arsed to put in the same effort to state why they disagree is even worse. If you cba to engage in a disucussion then why are people even here, it's almost as if some just see it as an easy way to basically bully people through the downvote button

No. We can't control it to that level. To be honest, we're not supposed to remove the downvote button at all, but reddit admins have turned a blind eye at the small-mid level subs doing it, particularly sports ones.

I've toyed with the possibility of also disabling certain res functions too, but decided against it when I did the CSS updates as that would be setting a pretty bad precedent (also, it can break a lot of shit if you start messing with RES).
