I am so confused.

How is this supposed to make me want a soda? Even ignoring the awful sexism...what does any of this have to do with the product?

Bro, Sprite is just being a Bro with you and talking about just being brutally honest Bro gossip about chicks. Don't you want to share a branded Sprite soft drink with your Bro, Sprite?

[–]Admiralbiatch2I did nothing wrong and I won't do it again 10

Here's the problem with Sprite or any product trying to be "My bro", it's a product, not my bro.

The original campaign was "encouraging people across the country to be brutally honest and share their refreshing truth," so I'm guessing it was something about furthering individuality? That's kind of been Coke's thing for a while. There were a couple videos about it, but it doesn't look like it was a major campaign (or hasn't taken off yet).

Are these user submitted lines or something? I just don't really get what any of this is supposed to be. It just kind of reminds me of when Mountain Dew had users submit and vote on names for their new flavor and "Hitler Did Nothing Wrong" was at the top.

But coke has song lyrics and words of encouragement. Sprite's just an asshole.

Advertising generally doesn't try to convince you that a product is good. Ads are inspirational; they try to convince you that this is what a certain kind of person is into, this is what these people deserve, and you want to prove to yourself that you're that kind of person, so you buy it.

Consider the typical beer ad: conventionally beautiful young people partying on the beach, guy opens a can, a big-breasted blonde comes over. I (the target audience of the ad) know perfectly well that no blondes shall come over when I open a beer. I am middle-aged, and fat, and I don't like parties anyway and don't really want to interact with people—but deep down I am like these people, if it weren't for my dayjob and my family and my bad knee… I spend every night on Netflix but I could go to a gym if I wanted to, and I'd be a total badass, I could totally get some killer abs, and then I'd finally enjoy the unending stress-free orgies that people surely must be having somewhere. And this kind of person drinks beer. So, by buying beer, I convince myself that I'm one of them. If I don't feel convinced (spoiler: we never are), I can always buy more stuff.

Now look at the Sprite ads. Can you see what sort of identity it's projecting? Kids who want to associate with being that edgy will now buy Sprite. Now apply the same rationale to Donald Trump…

I'll drink Dr. Pepper instead I guess.

Or not...

[–]SMUT_ADDICTLiterally Why 2ポイント3ポイント  (0子コメント)

'Manly calories'

I think you can understand all of this and still question the ad's effectiveness. It's obvious why an advertisement featuring young attractive people being cool would sell cola. Some random out of context put-downs less so.

Yeah, I don't get it either. Even at trying to be brotacularly sexist, it's screwing up its "jokes".

The Michaelangelo one especially baffles me. Isn't he known for one ceiling?

She's apparently seen two. Coincidentally, one was her visit to the Sistine.

Sprite pretty consistently has the worst ad campaigns of any major corporate product I can think of. It's kind of insane that a product owned by Coca Cola, pretty much the Kings of good advertising, can so consistently fuck up.

Pfft. Doesn't even make any sense: Michelangelo is famous for one (1) ceiling. More cogent to the point I think they are trying to make ("she" has some large amount of sex, and that's... a thing "she" does?) would be "Studied male anatomy more closely than Michelangelo." Cause, you know, he's famous for his mastery of the male form (and only the male form, his women, especially on the Sistine Chapel, just look like lumpy dudes with beasts painted on.)

The stupid...it burns...so much.

Way to go, Sprite. You dumb fuckers.

It's an ever escalating war between a society with improving sensitivity to social justice issues, and marketers knowing very well that 'edgy' works.

There were some horribly blatant sexist commercials in the 70s and 80s, and those are gone. But the sexism has moved on to porn entering the mainstream, and more extreme body ideals. So IMO we're still at the same kind of equilibrium, its not really better, just different.

If the marketers get their way, expect more 'edgy' references to blowjobs, anal sex, and that sort of thing in the future. High-five your bro while drinking Sprite after getting/achieving/extracting that from your 'female'.

[–]CinnarenScrappy Junk Witch 0

extracting that from your female

Ugh, that got too real. I hate that people see sex as a trade instead ofa shared experience. It seems so unhealthy to view it as give-and-take. It's not a fucking currency.

I doubt it'll have that much impact, but I'm sure PepsiCo's happy.

"Sierra Mist: Like Sprite, but we don't make bad jokes"

Do they even make Sierra Mist anymore? I can't remember the last time I've seen that stuff.

EDIT: According to Wiki, it just got rebranded as Mist Twst [sic] this year.

[–]Admiralbiatch2I did nothing wrong and I won't do it again 0

I never knew that. I guess I go to un-updated restaurants then. :|

Like is the Sprite Zero a girl Sprite that the regular Sprite just bedded? And she's... seeing his ceiling?

I don't even get it.

[–]WizeOaldOwlSocial Justice Wigglytuff 5

Excuse me while I go pour every Sprite in my fridge down the sink.

That doesn't really do anything, you already paid for the Sprite.

[–]WizeOaldOwlSocial Justice Wigglytuff 8

It's symbolic. To me. Let me have something to feel better about this trash ad.

No, You shall have NOTHING and like it!!!!

[–]DankWeedHackerSJW Illuminati Officer 3

Take a video and send it to sprite.

Lol I thought you made fun of op, but then i saw your username.

[–]WizeOaldOwlSocial Justice Wigglytuff 1

Not sure I follow. What about my username?

[–]SMUT_ADDICTLiterally Why 0ポイント1ポイント  (0子コメント)

Hides under WizeOaldOwl's sink

[–]Admiralbiatch2I did nothing wrong and I won't do it again 2

Or at least give it to me. I'm thirsty. :(

Drink a gatorade. The bottles look like giant penises but at least it's an equal opportunity dick in the mouth.

[–]Rogue_CoffeebotShill, baby, shill! 1

Ahhh, what brutally refreshing spite.

Hunting after the Mountain Dew crowd, I see.

Stupid. I like sprite but this ad makes me NOT want any.

Ah yes, the cheeky Nando's demographic

[–]Jeep-EepThen you get paedo rats. Do you want nonce mice? 0

Yet another reason why I don't drink sprite.

I miss a less edgy time where "Make 7up Yours!" was a very tongue in cheek thing with some clever commercial scripting.

[–]VorpalEskimo+2 against bigotry 0

Coca-Cola as a company is pretty much distilled evil anyway.
