As a former moderator of a subreddit with 220,000 subscribers at the time I left, I can tell you from firsthand experience what happened here.

It's because you got personally and emotionally involved with the direction of the subreddit. Moderators are ONLY to act as janitors and caretakers for a community, and not to push their own agenda and narrative on the community.

The death threats and vile behavior are obviously inexcusable, but you have to understand that online, people become absolutely disgusted and enraged when someone gets in the way of what they're trying to talk about.

When a moderator takes personal action on an issue like this, they're perceived from the community at large as a degenerate neckbeard who has become drunk on power because they're useless in real life. This is where the term "nazi mod" comes from. This is absolutely not my opinion of you, I'm just describing the phenomenon.

In order for this subreddit to calm down over the coming couple of weeks, I think the moderation team desperately needs to take a more hands off approach. At least until after release, stop enforcing self-made rules, go on autopilot, and only moderate based on reddit site-wide rules.

I know from personal experience that the more hands on the mods get, the more vitriolic and defensive the community will become about their "free speech" being encroached on.

Personally, you've worked hard on this community, and I don't think that you need to leave forever. I think you should just hold out until after release for when this place calms down after release and only the true fans stick around. It will be a lot more chill by that time, and it will be an enjoyable place to moderate for. Instead of resigning, just stop showing up until then.

I know it's tough but when a game such as this one doesn't meet everyone's expectations its gaming sub turns into a shitshow once reviews pour out. Then after a couple of weeks the trolls, whiners, and negativity will fizzle out and then fans of the game will only remain.

Honestly I have had to stop coming to the sub because of the spoilers.

I use to sit here and read posts about crazy theories and the deep wishes of people. Use to enjoy the art, from the professional to the 1st grade style artwork. I loved reading all the tiny little details we all pulled from the official trailers and demos....

Now I have to wade through spoiler after spoiler. So much for a game of wonder, when its all spoiled because of people who stole the game and those who promote them.

I'm a new member here and I have never met you before, but this kind of stuff really makes me sad. I discovered this game a few weeks ago and the concept already amazed me. I decided to look around at some available gameplay videos and I am hooked. Later, I decided to look up this community to see if there is more to get to know about, but instead I ended up in an ongoing pitfight with stuff like this to see.

It kind of makes me lose my faith in humanity to see people go crazy like this when certain expectations aren't met. To this people I want to say, your emotional reaction has zero effect on the circumstances. They are out of your reach and will be forever.

This is what you should know as well, 8 bit. I'm not asking to reconsider, but know that their words and input have zero measurable effect and should have zero measurable effect. Your message here however makes it look like their emotional response is having an effect. Is this the result you want to leave here?

I can't wait for this game. I also can't wait until this flamethrowing here is over.

Probably a good decision. Every time things go wrong some people resort to horrible things like threats of violence... it's dumb. I wouldn't want to support that either.

For me I expect things will turn around in a week or two. I don't see things really changing - next problem will be the same garbage, but the games release solves a lot of problems imo.

Anyways, people who want to use violence to resolve non-violent disputes aren't moral. Because respect for personal preferences is what it really means to be moral.

Sometimes folks on the internet think they're just yelling at their TV, uttering noises into the ether. Respect. No worries. Your work here is done. I suspect this won't be interpreted correctly, but I don't see much of a point in coming here once the game releases. I'll be unsubscribing in 7 days. It was really only interesting because it was a place where theory and conjecture were the foundation - and that was fun. Post release? With 77,000+ subscribers? Each with an ironcald opinion? Probably a wise decision. Small to medium sized communities are manageable, the loony toons easily located and banned without too much drama.

A community of this size though, the entitled rage blisters fill the space between reason.

I remember subbing here when there was less than 100 people. It's crazy to see this sub with this many people. I came here to thank you for the amount of time you invested in this so that people like me could waste our time here. I love the direction you and the other mods took the sub. Until recently it remained a creative environment that endorsed new ideas and didn't hate on people for new ideas. I just wish it could be the same as 3 years ago. I wish that the community remained supportive. Hopefully after release this hell hole calms down and once again we can begin sharing ideas and cool shit once again. Thanks for modding. Hope your new project goes well.

Man, all I can say is I'm sorry. I've been on this subreddit for the better part of the past year and a half, back when it was just a small community with a couple of thousand subscribers discussing a game they were excited about.

Over the years, seeing this place slowly mutate into such a toxic and downright fanatic place is just so sad. You did not deserve death threats, nobody deserved them, and I'm sorry you had to go under such circumstances.

I believe this place can serve as a lesson for what happens when a product is hyped up so astronomically.

I guess I could be depicted as critic of your modding. But I want to say that you don't deserve this primitive & immoral hostility. I feel sad that people resort to this kind of behaviour. I feel threatening people is on a similar level like real violence and people who resort to this just show their own paltriness.

I've been here for the last 3-4 days and this Subreddit has been quite a busy place, it's sad to see other people not being able to keep their cool over a game regardless of how cool it is.
