Why is Rooney having his testimonial now? Aren't they traditionally done at the end of a player's career?

They can be done once a player has served the club for at least ten years

Traditionally, yes. But now that players are spending more than 10 years at a club for some of them, it also works to have it now. Plus it's for charity and is a pre season game as well so, that works even better.

They're also traditionally to gather money to help a player after he retires. Which is outdated at the top level.
