The new episode was designed to spell all of that out to the weebs and "nice guys" and white knights etc that just didn't get that Subaru was a huge fuck up, Rem is a miracle gracing him to drive the story onward so we can keep prodding with the NEET, betamale psyche.

Thing is, I'm not sure if being Alpha would have benefited him much, considering the harshness of the world. Perhaps MGTOW would have been the best choice?

MGTOW can be beta or alpha it isn't some form of other.

Alpha starts with a state of mind but it doesn't end there, an Alpha mindset demands improvement and action, he has it in him to do these things but he never honed it; we see him failing at this behavior by trying too hard.

His confusion on Alpha behavior is what has resulted in many problems, specifically the claims of knighthood and grandstanding. That was a spectacular;y bad time to try and fail at alpha behavior, without a mentor like a father this sort of trial and error is necessary him being a NEET though has left him sorely unprepared.

Thing is, the characterization is botched, because as a NEET he should have known how to abuse his power and the current world to godhood, as he has done so many times in videogames, or seen in novels/manga/anime, ecc.

One thing that I think he would have needed from Alpha is the absolute and total belief that he is the most important person. Not Emilia, not anyone else. He, his survival and happiness are the most important, and that's what he should have focused on since the beginning.

Instead he, in his scarcity mentality, latched on the first female who gave him a minimum of attention and, well, the rest is history.

If there's one thing we know about subaru, it's that he hates dying.
