He drinks upwards of 4L of water a day + a thermos of coffee all day, for supper a small meal ( bbq smoky and some cottage cheese). Occasionaly a diet soda

Its working for him but I dont have the willpower for it, and at some point you have to eat like normal again.

Simple math Calories in = Calories out if the In is higher then out youll gain.
