[Opinion Post] Left Back (self.reddevils)

I'm going to be submitting a post a day for each position on the team which should create some discussion until the season begins. These posts are to compare the current options and general discussions surrounding each position. Yesterday was right back's turn, today is left back.

  • Do you feel any improvement is required in our left-back department?

  • How would you like CBJ's future handled? Kept in-house in case any further injuries happen to Shaw or allowed to go out on loan to develop more?

  • Do you see any promising reserves coming through?

  • Are you happy with Shaw as no.1 and further back-up provided by rotation cover?

I rather Darmian be on the left than Rojo. Rojo offers nothing attacking wise and is weak defensively. Blind is good on the left but I rather see him at midfield or center back. Luke Shaw is the starter no doubt, hope he finally goes injury free

Think Darmian will be backup here rather than RB, why else would he have played there vs Gala? I said it in another thread, surely if he was gonna play RB he'd have come on there with Young going to LB

A lot of people comment about our LB situation being fine. It isn't.

We really need to learn from last season that we're one injury away from being crippled at LB. Yes we have quantity at LB but we certainly don't have quality. After Shaw we are very limited. Rojo is awful, CBJ is very young and while Blind is a good player I just don't think he has the pace or dynamism to play LB.

I wish we'd sign a good back up LB, people often say if Shaw hadn't got injured we would've got 4th place. How can we then go into the new season with that kind of risk? Yes Shaw's injury was a freak but it's not like he's had a flawless injury record before that, last season was meant to be the season he got over his injury record and became a consistent first team regular.

I just feel nervous not having a proper backup LB to rotate with Shaw, it's a lot of games he's going to need to play and he's still so young.

I can see Darmian being back up to Shaw for the season with Valencia starting on the right, hence the Fabinho rumors. Other than that piece of wild speculation, I agree, we are desperately missing a quality LB backup.

We didn't sign Luke shaw in 2011, we signed him in 2014.

Would prefer for us to hang onto CBJ, he'd probably be my first choice back up and the game time this would give him would aid his development. Then again if he could a loan somewhere in the PL where he'd be playing week in week out I'd be comfortable with Blind as back-up. Rojo is a bit meh for me still, really don't think he's good enough for us and imo he's better at CB than LB.

Historically Shaw plays the full season at Southampton. hope he stays fit and healthy.

If that's the case, Darmian, Blind, Young, TFM, CBJ are more than enough numbers and quality to fill in when needed.

If Shaw missed large chunks of the season again then we'd get by. I don't think it's our weakness at all.

Hope Rojo is sold. He's awful.

I'd keep CBJ and give him minutes as Shaw's backup - have to manage Shaw's fitness carefully so lots of potential for games, especially in the Europa League
