The answer has to be 100 minutes, because the number of machines does not matter. 5 machines EACH make 5 widgets a piece. That is one widget per minute. Therefore, 100 machines, will individually make 100 widgets each, in 100 minutes.

Also, I realize I have left the answer unfinished. Asserting that every machine makes 1 a minute, the answer would be, 1 minute, because all 100 would have made 1, in 1 minute.

Not sure if trolling or just american.

because the number of machines does not matter

Not sure how you came to that conclusion.

5 machines EACH make 5 widgets a piece.

If they each made 5 widgets "a piece" (I assume you are saying "for every machine") then you'd have 25 widgets since there are 5 machines in the first example. But there's only 5 widgets at the end not 25.

That is one widget per minute.

No it's 1 widget every 5 minutes per machine.

Therefore, 100 machines, will individually make 100 widgets each, in 100 minutes

No they would make 100 widgets each in 500 minutes but that's not the point of this question, the point is to find out how long it would take 100 machines to produce 100 widgets, given that 5 machines can produce 5 widgets in 5 minutes.

Except they don't make 5 EACH they make 5 between ALL of them. Read it again. So 5 make 5 in 5. So 1 makes 1 in 5. Same as 1000 make 1000 in 5. 5 minutes per piece. Always.

I'm not good at explaing but it would take 5 minutes. Each of the machines are each working on their own widget and it takes 5 minutes to complete them all in the original order. That would mean it takes 5 minutes for a machine to make a widget. 100 machines would then make 100 widgets in 5 minutes
