What the hell? No... The minutes are not constant. The reason it's still 5 minutes is because the ratio of machine to widgets did not change. If it were 100 machines to make 50 widgets, it would be a different minutes output.

God damn, everybody really is retarded.

It would still take 5 minutes.

I think you're the retard here.

Yeah it's 5 minutes, but not because "the 5 minutes are a constant" that's just stupid. Try learning how to read and then re-read the comment you replied to.

How long does it take a million machines to produce one widget.

Hint: its five minutes.

It will always take 5 minutes for a machine to produce a widget. That is a constant in this scenario

Okay, so it's a minimum of 5 minutes, because, rather than work through hypotheticals and allow for partial builds to count, it takes a machine 5 minutes to build a widget.

In that case my example was incorrect. The minutes would only change if if the ratio increased in favor of widgets, and only by multiples of 5.

Yes because the time for a machine to produce 1 widget is constant at 5 minutes. The number of machines and number of widgets produced are variables.

how is it still 5 minutes? You'd think you'd have more efficiency with more machines, then what would be the point of adding more machines?

edit: so it turns out, people are assuming the machines can't work together

a million machines could produce anywhere from 1 to 1 000 000 widgets in five minutes, depending on how many of the machines are being used. Two separate machines cannot work on the same widget. hence when only one widget is required, only one machine is active. and as stated in the op it takes one machine five minutes to produce a widget.

facepalm

God how can anybody be this stupid? I hope your parents are embarrassed.

Unless the machines are adaptable or if they can simultaneously work on a machine, then the answer can change.

Where did that definition come from? The only given was that 5 machines of unknown make and model and purpose can make 5 widgets in 5 minutes, with no details about distribution of work or anything.

[–]Wotpan [スコア非表示]  (2子コメント)

Multiple machines cannot work on the same widget.

[–]time_to_despair [スコア非表示]  (1子コメント)

How do you know that? Please show me a picture of the machines.

To put it simply, if multiple multiple machines cannot work on the same widget /u/captainweekend is right, and if they can /u/robertofhill is right. What i was trying to do is explain the specific point in the argument where the two parties didn't understand one another.
