[Opinion Post] Right Back (self.reddevils)

I'm going to be submitting a post a day for each position on the team which should create some discussion until the season begins. These posts are to compare the current options and general discussions surrounding each position. Yesterday was goalkeeper's turn, today is Right Back!

Possible Talking Points

  • Do you feel any improvement is required in our right-back department?

  • If so, how do you feel our current options compare to possible targets such as Fabinho?

  • Do you see Fosu-Mensah there longterm or merely as possible backup?

  • Do you see any promising reserves coming through?

  • If Fabinho comes in, who do you see leaving?

I would rather see Fosu-Mensah as CB or CDM instead.

I have not seen enough of Fabinho in order to know how much he would improve us. But none of us have seen enough of Darmian either. I would really like to see him get a chance to prove himself this season.

I'm quite happy with Darmian and Valencia tbh. Wouldn't be upset if we signed Fabinho though.

Id love Fabinho and Darmian to rotate, but I love Valencia and want him to have game time too. Dilemmas.

I think we've got enough, Smalling, Bailly, Jones, Rojo, Blind, McNair and also Fosu-Mensah can play there. If we did get one he would definitely be a back-up and I doubt he would get much playing time if any.

Darmian will be good if he plays like he did at the start of last season.

Valencia came back from injury and definitely improved our team, more so in attack.

Fosu Mensah is young and has impressed me in all the positions he has played. Especially at CB against Watford

Happy to have Darmian in the squad but pretty sure Mou will prefer both Valencia and Bailly over him for their athleticism.

If Fabinho joins then Darmian will leave.

Only opinion I have is id like for us to get a specialist RB in the mould of Darmain (just a bit better in quality all round) and not rely on stop gaps such as Valencia.

I've never been Valencia's biggest fan post leg break but since then his attacking and risk taking tendencacies have really decreased as has his influence on games. He works hard and obviously loves wearing the shirt but he's really not the RB you need if you have aspirations of getting back on top :(

Darmian as first choice would be fine, we're probably in need of a experienced CB much more than a RB. IMO Valencia is subpar in defence and his crosses aren't particularly great, so I wouldn't mind Fabinho if the rumours are true.

This might get downvoted, but I've never really warmed up to Darmian. I feel he's an honest, down to earth, hardworking player and can regularly have a 7/10 game but I have a nagging feeling that he'll want to return to Italy sooner rather than later (would LOVE to be proven wrong).

Darmian : attacking :: Valencia : defending... can do an adequate job but can't be relied upon day-in, day-out. If we can get a Evra/Shaw for the RB/RWB position, then it'd be awesome. I've never seen Fabinho play so I don't know if he can be that player.

I feel TFM shouldn't be played too often at RB else he'll go the Jones route. My personal opinion is that he should be played at CDM (and CB at times to hone his defending/positioning skills).

I'd honestly prefer Fabinho to Darmian. Darmian had a few good games at the start of the season and that's all people seem to be going on about, they forget that for the rest of the season he was poor (when he wasn't injured). I think it'll be good for Darmian anyway, a little competition never hurt anyone. I don't like Valencia in that position and I haven't seen enough of Fosu-Mensah.
