As we're all F5 crazy for Pogba news I thought it would be interesting to talk about what event has gone on to change so much further down the line.

My example:

United in 15/16 were playing well (not brilliant, but well) with a young left back storming defences and putting in potentially game changing performances in Europe. Unfortunately, against PSV his season ended.

Now, my shower thought. If Shaw wasn't injured, we would have got at least a point or two more guaranteeing us top4. It's likely with Top4 and the FA Cup Van Gaal Stays.

Van Gaal stays, we struggle to attract Ibra and probably Pogba. Hell, maybe even Mkhi.

What a grim future timeline that could have been! What other little things have led to such big upheaval for us?

TL;DR: Without Shaw's injury, we would have Van Gaal and probably none of our best signings going into 16/17

If we'd have scraped 4th Van Gaal still would've been sacked with Mourinho waiting in the wings like he was.

No. We were just as shit when Shaw wasn't injured, but Shaw looked good. Van Gaal was incapable of changing his tactics and that costed us top 4, Shaw or not he would've been sacked. He had the chance to take it from City too many times and he fucking didn't.

Surely you can believe that? I can think of games that our left side of defence has lost us goals. Surely you can believe having Shaw would have probably gained us at least one extra point over the course of the season.

No. I think Shaw looked a little above average in a shit team, but still hasn't done anything to deserve the enormous levels of cocks-out hype which this sub gives him.

I didn't say he's the second coming. I don't understand how you find this difficult. He's our best LB. If we had a better LB throughout the season that's worth 1 point. He would have undoubtedly got at least one driving run and cross where it mattered, or a last ditch tackle where it mattered. I can't possibly understand how you'd think otherwise.

Why bother have him in the team if he's worth no extra points? Why don't we stick with CBJ and Darmian and Rojo there?

I can't possibly understand how you'd think otherwise.

He could equally have scored a crucial own goal, or been caught out of position.

You're arguing that his input into the team would only be good. You cannot possibly know that. It is completely irrational, given the additional set of variables Shaw introduces to the team, to argue that he would have assured us of fourth place.

I'm obviously not saying it's a guarantee, but the expected points if everything was the same but with Shaw in the team is undoubtedly higher. We're only talking in what's probable, not what's certain and that's obvious. You being pedantic about that point certainly doesn't make you right and doesn't make you clever.
