Pogba: overrated? (self.reddevils)

Hear me out.

I saw him play at the euros and to be honest, he wasn't even the best player in the team let alone be the best in the euros. I never saw him take the game by the scruff of the neck and dominate, but I did see a few glimpses of quality. In the champions league in the past few years I have seen him play and it's been a similar situation, granted he seems to have more freedom in Juventus to attack.

Is that all it takes for a player to be now worth +£80million? I don't feel that he would make a massive difference to united, and for that kind of money it's ridiculous. We have Schweinsteiger, Herrera, schniederlin, carrick, Fosu (potentially?) in the central midfield role already.

Am I the only one that feels like Pogba is overrated, and an unnecessary buy?

He was being played out of position, he's an attacking midfielder not a defensive midfielder

He was playing in a more attacking role in the earlier games and was better but still didn't light it up by any means.

All of the first team midfielders that we have lack the flair that Pogba has coupled with his physique. United will be paying loads of money for a powerhouse flair player who has yet to reach his peak (only 23) to a club that doesn't want to sell. IMO he is worth 60mil but due to this crazy inflated market as well as Juve's reluctance to sell, we had to go into crazy figures to purchase him.

I have always wanted someone like a Yaya Toure (sure they aren't necessarily similar but just for an example) for United, and with Pogba we are getting a player that brings star quality to our midfield.

I haven't watched him play and I too had my doubts. But then I went to Juve's sub all their fans were quite happy to chuck this enormous amount of money to keep Pogba.

This gave me hope.

OP, I for one agree with you. It's not a popular opinion at the moment, but the truth is he is overrated, at the moment. We are basing alot of his worth on potential, and while I feel one day he could be one of the best midfielders in the world, I find it strange that people are already calling him the finished article.

All those saying he played in a defensive role at the euros, fair enough, but if he played in an attacking position for Juve last season and only scored 9 goals in all competitions, does that really warrant paying €100+ million?

Depends on what you are comparing. Out of all those you listed as a B2B he's second after Modric. As a passer he's fifth after Kroos, Iniesta, Modric and Verratti. Athleticism he's arguable first due to his height advantage on Modric and defensively he's last with Kroos.

Out of all of those I'd happily have Pogba, Verratti is too short imo and we need somebody who can tower and bully the oppositions midfield although Verratti is an incredible player as well with just as high a ceiling as Pogba

Modric, Iniesta, Rakitic, Kroos, Busquets, Marchisio, Vidal are all definitely better than him right now.
