Next Captain After Rooney Leaves (self.reddevils)

Obviously I know he is still at the club, but it looks like his days are numbered. Who do you think would be a good long term captain for the club after he leaves.

I believe it was Sir Alex that said he'd rather have a defender as his captain because he'll be leading from the back, with a better perception of what is happening on the pitch.

I mean I would say smalling is a great choice as well but I was kinda just reaching for the leader of a defensive unit which is usually the goalie or central defender.

  2. Blind (if he stays on)

  3. De Gea (would be second choice if he were more vocal)

Smalling and de Gea are the only other possible options right now. If Smalling has another fantastic season and is a cemeted starter then probably him. Van Gaal already started the process of getting him ready for leadership and I think he'll have the best shot when the time comes.

Smalling will probably be it. Mourinho likes his captains in defense. Although I wouldn't be surprised if Blind gets it (if he does secure a starting spot).

And gave some interviews where he showed passion towards the club, and celebrated passionately whenever we scored a goal. This alone makes people here think that he is some top-tier midfielder. He hasn't shown enough when it matters on the pitch.

He has a LOT to prove, and I don't think he will get that many chances to do so.
