But they are spouting this information as fact, that there is no proof that a fish can have lungs. This, no matter how much they believe it to be true, is the spreading of misinformation. That is the bullshit being called.

Yes. They are spreading misinformation.

But they seriously believe this and they are wrong. What they are not doing is lying. And so the second poster gave him some information to further work with - but the guy didn't bullshit (lie), so bullshit was not called. (Unless bullshit through a misinformed proxy falls under rule 1, of course.)

It's bullshit even if they believe it. Rule number 5 covers it. It's not an "honest mistake". Homeopaths and Anti-Vaxxers are still bullshit portals despite the fact that they honestly believe it. It's not not bullshit just because they aren't intentionally lying when they are spreading lies in the face of the real facts.

Rule 5 is not exhaustive. Check rule 1: Bullshit is explicitly defined as lies.

Right, that's what I meant by misinformed proxy. But again: creationists and anti-vaxxers are not neccessarily lying. If we're going by "misinformed proxy" you might as well screenshot every misconception out there.

It's not an "honest mistake" if there is a horde of evidence that is easily found. An "honest" mistake is one that anybody could have made, so it doesn't extend to easily available information. I definitely see where /u/TheFlyingBastard is coming from, but I think the difference is an honest mistake is something where either the information changed or is controversial (like in many taxonomy things, such as whether Apes are Monkeys because they are simiiformes), or the information isn't readily available, or if it's very hard to grasp because it's a highly technical subject.

It isn't an honest mistake when the misconception can be cleared up with a google search but you instead take somebody's word as fact without any attempt at auxiliary research.

Essentially, if it's your fault you made the mistake because you could have prevented it with a degree of diligence, it's not an honest mistake.

I think /u/NerdCrush is going by what I mentioned earlier: bullshit by proxy.

So if I lie to my brother, and my brother tells it to his classmate, and his classmate tells it to his father, and the father posts it to reddit as true, he is considered to be bullshitting (lying) even if it's an honest mistake. In other words: a wide interpretation of rule 1 trumps rule 5.

Practically that means you can now hunt down any misconception at all, debunk it and then post it here as if you called out a lie because it was bullshit a few sources ago.
